HOKKAIDO FURANO SKI 2019
I enjoyed skiing at Furano ski resort in Hokkaido. Powder snow in Hokkaido is the best. After skiing, I visited Biei town and the snow landscape was fantastic.

Furano Ski Resort, Hokkaido Japan
Our family vacation to Furano during the December 2019 holiday. Was here the first time in 2016 but stayed in a different place instead of the New Furano Prince hotel. Convenient accommodation for ski-in ski-out directly from the hotel, but the ski lift can get very busy and crowded after 3pm when both the gondola and ropeway lifts are closed in the Furano zone.
Furano Ski Resort - Japan
The Furano Ski area is made up two zones, the Kitanomine zone (Mid. Dec - Late Mar) and the Furano zone (Late Nov - Early May). Both areas have a variety of accommodation options and the town of Furano is only a 3-minute shuttle from the Kitanomine zone and a 6-minute shuttle away from the Furano zone and is home to a wide array of restaurants and bars and all the services you would expect to find in a town. Both of these zones can be accessed on the one pass and are serviced by 11 lifts. Furano has an abundance of varied terrain for every level of skier and snowboarder and a vertical drop of over 950 meters making it one of the steepest mountains in Hokkaido.

Furano received 200 cm of snow in December, and I gained 200kgs in ramen weight.
Furano follows the FIS 10 Rules for skiing/snowboarding safety, please read them and ride responsibly. Much of the terrain in Furano is off-piste, so an avalanche pack (including beacon, shovel, and probe) is highly recommended. Avalanche training is also suggested, if not mandatory. However, there is still a lot of terrain in-bounds of varying difficulties!

Furano Ski Resort
Furano is one of Japan's most famous ski resorts, although relatively little is known about it outside of Japan. Situated in the powder-bellt in the middle of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, Furano benefits from Siberian storm systems that pass over the Sea of Japan and then dump the lightest and driest snow in all of Hokkaido - and 9 meters of it each season. After a big snow fall there is often untracked powder for days.

TOP 5 SKI RESORTS IN HOKKAIDO | JAPAN SKIING GUIDE
TOP 5 SKI RESORTS IN HOKKAIDO, JAPAN
Hokkaido is to powder skiing what the Hawaiian North Shore is to surfing. The northernmost island of Japan is a Mecca for powder hunters – its reputation built upon the staggering quantities of snow that fall every winter. Hokkaido ski resorts often receive in excess of 15 metres per season, though many of the resorts simply don’t measure (why bother).
But it’s not all about quantity. Snow storms over the north of Japan are mostly the result of cold winds blown over from Siberia, which pick up moisture over the Sea of Japan before depositing huge amounts of snow on Hokkaido’s many ski resorts.
The outcome? Some of the driest, coldest snow you’ll find on the planet. The consistency of the snow is truly like powder, and the effect on a skier carving through a fresh 50 cm snowfall is the sensation of weightlessness. It is the pinnacle of skiing – the feeling that every skier on the planet strives for.
Over the last decade, international skiers have cottoned on to the quality of skiing in Hokkaido, and the result is that many Hokkaido ski resorts now offer services, facilities and accommodation geared towards overseas travellers.
And while Hokkaido was once considered a destination for the seasoned ski bum in search of a powder fix, its resorts are now being visited – and truly enjoyed – by beginners, families and luxury travellers.
We’ve put together a list of the top 5 Hokkaido ski resorts, and we genuinely believe that the resorts in our list offer something for everyone. So read on, and let us know in the comments if you have any questions.
