Biei Blue Pond, Hokkaido, Japan
Taken on 23 November 2018
From JR Asahikawa Station, take bus no. 39 to Shirogane Hot Spring at bus stop no. 8. No need to reserve tickets in advance. Just pay on the bus upon getting off.
Fare is 1070 yen if I remember it correctly, one way, getting off at the blue pond bus stop.
If you want to catch the return bus to Asahikawa or Biei, you must explore the pond in 30 minutes or less so that you would have time to walk back to the road to catch the bus (on the other side of the road). Otherwise, you would have to wait for more than 3 hours for the next bus. If you have your own car, then this won't be an issue.
I opted to explore the pond longer and instead of catching the return bus or waiting for 3 hours or so for the next one, I walked for about 40 minutes to check out the Shirahige falls in the Shirogane Hot Spring area where a few onsen hotels and tourist information center are located. Unfortunately, that day was a public holiday hence the information center was closed. It was cold and freezing since it was snowing. There is a hotel next to it where I sought warmth instead.
I took the return bus at the hot spring area to JR Asahikawa for 1180 or 1190 yen, I think.

Japan Travel: A Picture Perfect View at the Furano Flower Fields, Hokkaido 03 Moopon
Furano (富良野) is a beautiful town in the center of Hokkaido, famous of its floral landscapes. July is a popular time to visit Furano, as the Furano famous lavender fields are in full bloom. In the winter, Furano transforms into a downhill and cross country skiing resort.
Lavender has been grown and cultivated in Hokkaido for more than half a century. However, the demand for Hokkaido’s lavender has decreased due to lower priced, imported lavender. Currently, lavender in Hokkaido is more a tourist attraction than an agricultural crop.
Furano's picturesque lavender fields bring large number of tourists to this area every summer. The majority of lavender begins to bloom in late June and peaks from mid July to early August. Though less in quantity, other varieties of lavender remain in bloom until mid August.
In addition to lavender, there are many other flowers cultivated in Furano. Visitors interested in flowers should plan to visit between June and September, though there is fluctuation between the flowers making view beautiful before and after this time period. In general, the following flowers are seen in the following time periods:
From June…rape blossoms, poppies and lupins
From July…lilies
From August and September…sunflowers, salvias and cosmos
Though there are numerous flowers fields across Furano, Farm Tomita is a popular spot. With the Tokachi Mountains in the background, the lavender and flower fields make a beautiful picture. Entry to the farm is free of charge. Visitors can explore the fields as well as the cafes and shops within the grounds to see the wide range of lavender related products this region produces. Some lavender inspired food products include lavender ice cream and lavender cream puffs.
Note: please be aware Farm Tomita is especially crowded during the peak season of lavender.
In 2008, Farm Tomita opened a second farm, Lavender East. Lavender East is located about four kilometers east of Farm Tomita. Visitors will be greeted by the most spacious of all lavender fields in Furano, covering 14 hectares, here. In addition to a shop, cafe and observation deck, visitors can ride the Lavender Bus through the lavender fields. The bus ride is 15 minutes and there is a nominal fee.

Let’s Go! Traversing Hokkaido
Sapporo and Hokkaido is easily accessible via plane through the Sendai Airport and takes a little over an hour to land into the New Chitose Airport. From there the Rapid train reaches Sapporo in around 40 minutes.
We spent one week travelling across the island via train, subway, bus and car. Sapporo is a very liveable and green city. As we made our was across the island, it was great knowing we had made it to the very North. It was definitely a visit worthwhile as the drive up is mostly along the beautiful coast of Ishikari and Rumoi with great pit stops at the many michi-no-ekis.
Locations visited: Sapporo Tower, Hokkaido Government Office, Hokkaido Shrine Office, Maruyama Zoo, Atsuta Michi-No-Eki, Shosanbetsu Michi-No-Eki, Cape Soya, Wakkanai, Furano Farm Tomita and Melon House, Hokkaido University Museum, Nakajima Park, Sapporo Concert Hall
The Let's Go Series was produced to inspire my ES children to get outside and explore. Only basic English is used in the videos so that children learning English as a second language can follow along.

Feast your eyes at Hitachi Seaside Park
Hitachi Seaside Park in Ibaraki Prefecture is a vastly spacious park facing the Kashima Sea that covers an area of 470 acres. The park features blooming seasonal flowers all year round, which makes the place a flower paradise.
The spring season sees about 4.5 million blue nemophila plants in full bloom, dubbed “Nemophila Harmony”, covering the Miharashi Hill. The spectacular sight of the field mirroring the sky attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world every year. The flowers usually are at their peak between late April to mid May. From the top of the hill, the Pacific Ocean can be viewed.
In the autumn, red replaces blue as glorious kochia bushes cover the Miharashi Hill. The mysterious plant has a fluffy round shape and looks like a massive pom poms from a distance. As the autumn season deepens, the kochias turn from green to bright red from July to October.
Near the park’s main entrance is Suisen Garden, a large forested area where narcissus bloom usually beginning from mid March.
Tamago no Mori Flower Garden (Egg Forest Flower Garden) across the lake is reminiscent of the Netherlands, with multi-coloured tulips and a windmill at the center. The tulips start from late March until late April.
Besides all the flower gardens, a small amusement park can also be found in Hitachi Seaside Park. Named Pleasure Garden, there are over 25 attractions and rides, including a roller coaster, a BMX course and a large Ferris Wheel that can be seen from everywhere in the park.
Due to the size of the park, rental bicycles are available, and visitors can cycle through the cycling track that’s almost 11 kilometres long. There are also restaurants and rest areas around the park, as well as a barbecue area for picnics.
Hitachi Seaside Park is the perfect place to place for a day trip, especially for those who wish to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The park doesn’t only offer picture perfect landscapes, but also peace and serenity for visitors to relax and recharge spiritually, and spend a lovely time with their loved ones.
