Furen Limestone Cave, Usuki Oita - 風連鍾乳洞●臼杵市大分 - Japan As It Truly Is
The Furen Limestone Cave in Usuki, Oita is one of the closest things you can do to be on another planet.
If you like the movie Aliens, you've found just the place for you. There are over 100 limestone caves across Japan, and this is one of the best. It's also relatively unknown, so there are very few crowds to deal with.
Walking through this cave, it's truly humbling to know how small we really are. It takes about 100-130 years for a stalactite to grow 1 cm - and this cave has been carved out over the aeons and existed long before humans did.

Limestone cave adventure in Japan (風連鍾乳洞) | Here in Japan
Hands down the coolest cave I have ever seen, and I know my caves.
I'm a geologist.
Hi everyone, today I want to take you to the Furen Limestone Cave in a tiny town in Eastern Kyushu called Notsu, part of the city of Usuki. In 1926, a limestone cave, one of the most beautiful of caves in Japan, was discovered by a local youth group. A year later, it was designated by the Japanese government as a natural treasure of Japan.
I was invited to go see this cave twice within about two weeks, and took some video footage each time I went.
The first time, I went with my wife, a couple of friends, and a Japanese lady I know that invited us. I was blown away at how stunning the cave was. And, having a degree in geology, it was one of the very few chances I've had to have an interested audience listening to me talking about rocks. ;)
Also, there were bats in the cave, and let's just be honest with each other here, bats are cool.
The second time, I was invited by a school that I teach at to come and see the 6th grade students give guided tours through the cave. This time, I rode the bus and then walked a ways to get to the cave.
Unfortunately, my knowledge of geology seems to be mainly confined to the English language, as my knowledge of geology words in Japanese is pretty limited. However, still a great time and I was so excited to go explore it again.
If you want to go straight to the entrance of the cave, start at 2:45
If you want to skip to the main room of the cave, it is at 6:55
However, you'll probably regret skipping the rest of it, so just start at the beginning ;)
If you are ever in the Eastern Kyushu region, I highly recommend a visit. I'll stick a map down here in case you ever get the chance.

THE CREEPIEST SHRINE IN JAPAN | Usuki, Oita
A friend mentioned that there is a shrine with stacks of bones around it and we HAD to check it out.
We had to drive through some rugged roads and climb an almost vertical mountain cliff. It was definitely a cool shrine inside a cave. It's apparently a hunting shrine - somewhere to pray for/give thanks for successful hunts by returning the skulls of the animal. The skulls of hunted boars and deers were piled about knee high.
Much love and happy travels

【Quality of 9】Inazumi Underwater Limestone Cave
Four months have passed since the Kumamoto Earthquake which occurred in April 2016. Ten representatives from Japan and other countries who took part in Miss International Pageant 2015 and 2016 traveled around Kyushu as restoration support. This is a video that shows they gradually find charm of Kyushu with their own sensitivity through people they met, the foods they savored and the scenery they were impressed by.

Usuki Stone Buddha Fire Festival
So, this video is from back in the summer before I got internet. In August, the town of Usuki in Oita had a fire festival at their Stone Buddhas.
The JETs organised a little BBQ on the beach before heading to the buddhas. Unfortunately, I stayed at the beach a little too long and missed the tours that were given by local students.
The Stone Buddhas are a national treasure so I was glad to see them. However, I was a little disappointed that I missed the tours from students. Overall, it was a cool little festival.
** Also, sorry about the shakiness of the video. My hands were extra shaky this day. ???? **
Much love and happy travels

Arrival In Japan | The Gaijin Survival Guide
The Gaijin Survival Guide announcement video starts with a time-lapse video of the sun rising on the Usuki castle located on the eastern shore of Oita prefecture. A voice-over gives a very brief explanation of the meaning of the Japanese word for Japan, and describes the legend about how Japan came into being. The video then transitions into an explanation of the geography of Japan's main islands: Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The map of the country zooms into the island of Kyushu, specifically Oita prefecture. A black dot appears to show the location of the city of Usuki.
Several short shots flash images of Japan (specifically in the city of Usuki, in Oita Prefecture), including the Usuki Stone Buddhas, a Buddhist temple, the Usuki Castle, and some Japanese Koi fish.
The narrator then declares that he and his wife have moved to the city of Usuki, and while in the grounds of the Usuki castle, tells about the history and highlights of the city.
He talks about the castle and when it was built, and the Usuki Stone Buddhas. Explaining that the Buddhas were designated as national treasures and that they were carved somewhere between the 12th and 14th century, the narrator then briefly mentions temples and shrines and pagodas, and the Nioza Historic Road in Usuki.
The natural highlights are then covered, including the Furen Limestone Caves, a mineral hotsprings, the Hakubakei valley, and a rare type of bamboo that is only found in Usuki.
Japanese festivals are briefly mentioned, specifically talking about the Stone Buddha Fire Festival, the cherry blossom (sakura) festival in the spring, and a festival in November where 20,000 bamboo lanterns are lit around the city.
He finally announces the next couple of videos for the Gaijin Survival Guide, a set about the Japanese syllabaries, Hiragana and Katakana. Another movie about proper chopstick usage and etiquette is also announced.
