These are the two rocks said to be two married kami. Luckily I was there when it was high tide. The shrine itself is pretty nice with a frog motif dominating.

Meoto Iwa (夫婦岩), or the Loved one-and-loved one Rocks, are a couple of small rocky stacks in the sea off Futami, Mie, Japan. They are joined by a shimenawa (a heavy rope of rice straw) and are considered sacred by worshippers at the neighbouring Futami Okitama Shrine (Futami Okitama Jinja (二見興玉神社?)). According to Shinto, the rocks represent the union of the creator of kami, Izanagi and Izanami. The rocks, therefore, celebrate the union in marriage of man and woman. The rope, which weighs over a ton, must be replaced several times a year in a special ceremony. The larger rock, said to be male, has a small torii at its peak.
The best time to see the rocks is at dawn during the summer, when the sun appears to rise between them. Mount Fuji is visible in the distance. At low tide, the rocks are not separated by water.
Okitama Shrine is dedicated to food goddess Miketsu. There are numerous statues of frogs around the shrine. The shrine and the two rocks are near the Grand Shrine of Ise, the most important location in Shinto.

Ise is home to Ise Grand Shrine, the most sacred Shintō Shrine in Japan, and is thus a very popular destination for tourists. The city has a long-standing nickname—Shinto (神都)—that roughly means The Holy City and literally means Capital of the Kami). It is part of Ise-Shima National Park.

Mie Meoto Iwa - 夫婦岩 - 4K Ultra HD : Located off the shores of Futami city in Mie and just 10km away from Ise Grand Shrine, Meoto Iwa (also known as the Married Couple Rocks), are a couple of small rocks sitting peacefully.
According to the Shinto Futami Okitama Jinja (二見興玉神社), the rocks represent the union of the creators of Izanagi-no-Okami (God), represented by the larger rock and Izanami-no-Mikoto (Goddess), by the smaller and more delicate rock. Link together by a rope, these two rocks symbolize the union in marriage between a man and a woman.
It is also interesting to note that the rope linking both rocks can weigh up to a ton and need to be replaced several times a year during a dedicated ceremony organized by the Futami Okitama Jinja. Finally if you plan to visit Meoto Iwa it is, according to the locals, advisable to come in summer and early in the morning to fully enjoy the sun rising between the two rocks.
Also note that the video above was taken on the same day, first at 6am during high tide, and then at 2pm during low tide.

【縁結びスポット】夫婦岩が有名な三重県伊勢市・二見興玉神社にお参り散歩 Walk at Futami shrine Meotoiwa , Ise Mie JAPAN.
三重県伊勢市にある、夫婦岩(めおといわ)で有名な二見興玉神社(ふたみおきたまじんじゃ)へお参りに行ってきました。名古屋からゆっくり走って約2時間、伊勢神宮内宮から約30分で着きます。
三重県では伊勢神宮に次いで参拝者が多く、撮影をした1月中旬は初詣のピークを過ぎた時期ですがそれでも多くの参拝客で賑わっていました。人気の水族館・伊勢シーパラダイス隣接の「めおと横丁」からスタートし、二見浦海岸沿いの参道、社内を歩いてきました。
古来より伊勢神宮参拝の前に二見浦の海水で心身を清め禊をする「浜参宮」という慣わしがあり、現在でもまず二見興玉神社に参拝し、お祓いを受けてからお伊勢さんへ向かう方が多いのだそうです。

I went to visit Futami Okitama Shrine famous for couple rock (Meoto iwa) in Ise city, Mie prefecture. It will take about 2 hours from Nagoya and arrive in about 30 minutes from Ise Shrine inland shrine.
In Mie prefecture, next to Ise Shrine there are many worshipers, and in the middle of January I shot, it was a time when I passed the peak of the New Year's visit but still crowded with many visitors. Starting from the popular aquarium · Ise Sea Paradise neighbor Meoto yokocho, I have been walking in the entrance along the Futamiura coast, inside the shrine.
From the ancient times before the Ise shrine visit, there is a custom of Hama sangu which cleanses the mind and body with the seawater of Futamiura, even now it is better to visit Futami okitama Shrine and visit Ise for the first time It seems that there are a lot.

Okitama-stone is called an incarnation iof Sarutahiko-Okami , and it’s from Meotoiwa(a rock of husband and wife) in an undersea of offing 700m.
Then, it is said to be an origin that a Shimenawa was tighten on Meoto-rock(a rock of husband and wife) and a worship spot (the place to pray from a far far place) was established.
Sarutahiko-Okami was enshrined together with Uganomitama-Okami in 1910 and was called Futamiokitama-shrine.
The left big rock is called Oiwa(men’s rock), and right small rock is called Meiwa(women’s rock).
Oiwa is height 9m, and Meiwa is height 4m. I think if you see the rocks near you might think how big the rocks are.

Futami: Meoto Iwa, frogs, and the sea!
So throughout highschool, a picture of Meoto Iwa was on the wall in the art room and I can remember being 15, staring at it and deciding I really wanted go see it for myself in person. I had no idea where or what it was, just that it looked really cool and interesting.
In March this year I finally got to visit when I headed over to Mie and although it was kind of smaller than expected, it was so nice to finally be able to stand there in person and see it for myself. Yay for achieving goals!
