The series, Ideas in the Agora, opens its third year with two public discussions devoted to the revolutions of 1989. These events are a continuation of our Ideas in the Agora Festival, which has already included a colloquium (on 23 June), also debating the theme of 1989 and of its aftermath. The evenings of 1 and 4 October feature invited guests from Leipzig, in the framework of a Leipzig Week in Bucharest organized by the City of Leipzig, the Embassy of Germany in Romania, and the City of Bucharest. I would like to thank all those, in Germany and in Romania, who made these events possible.
This afternoon, the topic of debate is the museum of the future. In our time--presentist (to use François Hartog’s theory of regimes of historicity) or posthistorical (to use Hegel and Kant as read by Kojève and, more recently, Fukuyama)--, the very idea and the future of the museum have been called into question. Three distinguished museum professionals are tackling these issues, suggesting ways in which the museum of the future can still be a significant site of public memory, research, dialogue, education and more.

Romanian Pavilion — Adrian Ghenie :: Darwin's Room
Adrian Ghenie represents Romania at the 56th International Art Exhibition — La Biennale di Venezia (9 May - 22 November 2015).
The Romanian Pavilion, curated by Mihai Pop, showcases Darwin’s Room, an exhibition of paintings by Adrian Ghenie organized across three rooms – according to the original interior architecture of the Pavilion (from 1938) – and comprises a specific theme for each of these rooms: The Tempest, The Portrait Gallery (Self-portrait as Charles Darwin), and The Dissonances of History.
Expanding upon Darwin's 'laboratory', Ghenie proposes an interpretive path into the notion of survival. He reads into the theory of biological evolutionism and the ways it has been skewed to transform societies. He also draws upon other historical sources in his updating of this image (fundamental to our self-perception), 'contaminating' it with a keen reflection on neoliberal competitiveness, extending across all areas and folds of social and affective life. Darwin's studio broadens its scope and becomes an incubator where future ideas grow and develop. It is an interweaving of past and future histories that does not hold proof or speculation on species evolution, which neither distorts nor idealizes, but opens a path towards a reformulation of the social values that structure contemporary existence. To equal extents, this returns to an essential moment, when epistemological tables were turned, and uses Darwin's scientific tabula rasa to project or inscribe a new image of our future.
Gazing into the future is premised on revisiting the past with a lucid eye, parsing through myths that accreted as foundation for the writing of history, of the fictions that define nations, of the fabricated narratives that fragment history into centres and peripheries, occupied respectively by winners and losers.
The exhibition is accompanied by Adrian Ghenie – Darwin’s Room, a book edited by Juerg Judin and Mihai Pop, and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. The Romanian edition will be published by Editura Humanitas.
Adrian Ghenie (b. 1977, Baia Mare) belongs to a generation that has demonstrated its ability to lucidly reflect upon the difficult and often traumatic underpinnings of local histories. The use of a nuanced examination of how the contemporary is shaped by memory and desire, convulsion and spectacle, plays a central part in his work. Ghenie is, alongside other remarkable representatives of the same artistic community, one of the founders of the Paintbrush Factory in Cluj, which brings together some of the most dynamic artistic initiatives in Romania. Previous solo exhibitions include: Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Málaga (2015); Golems, Pace Gallery, London (2014); On the Road to… Tarascon, Plan B, Berlin (2013, with Navid Nuur); Pie-Fights and Pathos, Museum for Contemporary Art, Denver (2012); S.M.A.K. Museum, Ghent (2010); and The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Bucharest (2009). Previous group exhibitions include: I Will Go There, Take Me Home, MAC Belfast (2015); Six Lines of Flight, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2012); Francis Bacon and the Existential Condition in Contemporary Art, Palazzo Strozzi, Florence (2012); European Travellers: Art from Cluj Today, Kunsthalle Mücsarnok, Budapest (2012); The Crystal Hypothesis, Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea Bergamo (2010); and the Liverpool Biennial (2008). The artist lives and works in Cluj and Berlin.

My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlog daily, and love pizza a little too much.
Links below to Amazon are affiliate links - meaning if you click through them and buy something, I'll get some pennies. Thanks! (The FTC wants me to tell you that up front)
FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? On and off for over two years.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a Draw My Life video that explains a lot here:
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself:
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here:
Do you speak French? Oui.
You talk a lot about the books you're working on, what are they about? - They're sci-fi (and fantasy) and I've got a decent pitch for you here:
Do you make money off YouTube? - Ha, no. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos:
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game):
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one:
And here's the French wishlist:

Romania: Comrades commemorate Ceausescu in Bucharest 26 years after execution
Mourners gathered at the graves of Romania's last Communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena in Ghencea Cemetery, Bucharest, Thursday, to commemorate 26 years since the couple were executed on Christmas Day morning of 1989.
SOT, Old Comrade, (Romanian): We have newcomers, I am not sure whether I can call them criminals or not. They permit abortions, that is why we no longer have any schools, we no longer have children in our country. The army was disbanded by Basescu, what country is that without an army?
SOT, Old Comrade, (Romanian): Today we have a German bloke who is working his way slowly, step by step, and he is showing us what hides behind the art of speech.
SOT, Young Comrade, (Romanian): We used to be the 10th most industrialised country in Europe, we were ranked fifth or six for standard of living in Europe. Nowadays, the people my age, of my generation are starving, they have no future.
SOT, Old Comrade, (Romanian): I used to be a pioneer, I was a Komsomol member, I also was a Communist. Do you understand me? Why not? I already told you. In Romania, it was Communism which brought enlightenment to the country. He was not a dictator. He was no dictator. He was a great leader.

Astra Historic Village Museum Near Sibiu Romania E028
I made a day trip with two friends (Yuval and Nozomi) to the Astra Museum which is really more of a historic village. One of the highlights was learning how to use a manual scythe to mow grass! Each of us took a try at it! Enjoy!

Portal ART Exhibition by Anca Irina Lefter - opening Nov2018 at Palatul Universul Bucharest Romania
Anca Irina Lefter is a complex artist: a painter, an art designer focused on conceptual bag design with the signature AIL launched in 2017 and a designer of accessories in leather and stage costumes under signature collection Ch2 Vinyls, specially created for artists David Guetta, Tara McDonald, Bill Patrick, Luciano.
In 2018 she launched the PORTAL concept, an artistic concept with the purpose to make people reconnect with their own nature and inner world via painting, music, fashion, science and by that, to respect the world and nature around because they are a part of it. The PORTAL is created by 5 elements of nature: AIR, EARTH, FIRE, WATER and MAGNETISM.
PORTAL- Immersive Art Experience & Science combines the 10 paintings that show spirals of different colors used to build 5 portals representing: air, earth, fire, water and magnetism all representing the force of life and of the human relations. A unicity and novelty of the Artist work is that she used on her works the house paint Benjamin Moore to which she added a Nano plasmatic technology from Plasma Romania, the visitors being able to feel the energy of the plasma while entering the PORTAL.
“The spirals make people to feel attracted in the painting, like in a tunnel. They focus on these geometric forms, on the colors and they will feel in a different state, more receptive, opening a door (The Portal).”- says ANCA IRINA LEFTER.
