Fin Whales in São Miguel Azores - Futurismo Azores Whale Watching
Fin whales are the second largest animals in the world. Their most distinguishing feature is the asymmetrical markings on the head: on the right side the lower lip, mouth cavity, and baleen plates are white, whereas on the left these features are dark. The dorsal fin is smaller and more falcate than that of the sei whale, and they have only one ridge on the head, unlike the Bryde's whale which has three. Fin whales are among the fastest of the whales, reaching speeds up to 47 km/hr and because of this they have gained the nickname greyhounds of the sea.
Fin whales have a wide global distribution. While many populations are thought to be migratory, resident populations also exist. In the Azores migratory fin whales are seen primarily during the spring months. They are usually encountered alone or in small groups and often follow the same path. Sometimes we can observe feeding behaviour as they pass by the Azores.

ORCAS keep delighting us! | AZORES | FUTURISMO
EN | It looks like the orcas are not ready to leave São Miguel yet! ???? It has been almost a week now since the first time we saw them earlier this month. What a delight for the eyes to see those majestic creatures swim around our boat! Did you know that killer whales (or orcas) are actually the biggest dolphins, and not whales? :)
Read more and discover the pictures of today’s trip on our blog:
PT | As orcas continuam por São Miguel. ???? É um momento tão mágico quando as vemos nadar perto do nosso barco! Sabiam que as orcas são a maior espécie de golfinhos? Também vimos
golfinhos comuns na nossa viagem desta manhã.

Azores - Watching Dolphins with Futurismo [Must watch in 1080p HD]
WHALE WATCHING IN THE AZORES
Futurismo is one of the most experienced whale watching companies in the Azores, offering year-round responsible whale and dolphin watching tours and swimming with dolphins tours. Our tours of around 3 hours operate daily, depending on weather conditions. All tours are preceded by a briefing in which one of our qualified biologists explains the importance of how the Azoreans have converted whale hunting to whale watching in the Azores. Each briefing also contains information about safety, rules of observation and respect for the animals and an overview of what may be sighted during the tour. All our tours are led by qualified biologists and nature guides who provide detailed explanations and collect scientific data during the tour. Lying in the Atlantic Ocean, about a third of the way between Portugal and North America, the Azores islands are a permanent home or point of passage for more than a third of the world’s whale and dolphin species. Sperm whales, common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and Risso’s dolphins are present around the Azores archipelago throughout the year. Other species visit or pass by during specific seasons so that our sightings vary a lot during the year and often from day to day! Summer months are the best time to see Atlantic spotted dolphins, pilot whales and striped dolphins, whereas the spring months are the time to see migrating baleen whales such as blue whales, fin whales and see whales.

Spring Fam Trip 2017 - DAY 5: EPIC Whale Watching in São Miguel - Azores
On the 5th day of our fam trip in the Azores we went to São Miguel Island to do an epic whale watching tour. Every trip is very different. We where extremely lucky since we encountered a fin whale and a blue whale during the trip, within few minutes. Is not usual to find the animals that fast, but this trip was amazing.
Both fin whales and blue whales are migratory animals. They pass through the Azores between March and June (the trip was filmed in April 2017 close to Ponta Delgada, Azores Islands, Portugal).
