HAPPY NEW YEAR: The first sunrise of 2020 in China
What part of China is the first to say hello to the morning sun? It’s right here in northeastern China's Fuyuan county - the easternmost place in China, it is the ideal place to enjoy the country's the first sunrise of 2020. Fuyuan is located in the lowlands at the confluence of the Heilongjiang River and Wusuli Rivers. The city sits on the southern bank of the Amur. On the opposite side of the river is Russia's Jewish Autonomous Region.
China Freezes in -30 Temperatures
The cold front continues to strike China, some places have seen the lowest temperatures in decades. Here is with more.
In the vast area of northern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the temperature has plunged to negative 30 degrees Celsius.
Heavy snowfall this month has left roads under a frozen layer of snow.
Here in Xinjiang's Qinghe County, the continuing minus 40 degree Celsius temperature has caused water pipes in many households to crack.
Huang Jiangyun, Manager of Qinghe Fuyuan Water Supply & Drainage Co., said, The weather is too cold, and the pipes aren't very deep.
These repairmen have been going from home to home over the past few days fixing broken pipes. When the job is almost done in one place, the phone starts ringing again.
Jiang Haiqing, Team Captain of Qinghe Fuyuan Water Supply & Drainage Co., said, We are dealing with a water leakage. We will come over as soon as we are done here.
In northern parts of Jiangsu province in East China, a cold front alert has been in place for the past 48 hours. In Shanghai, even a sunny day doesn't bring much warmth.
But still, the cold doesn't stop people there from going out.
Our kid wanted to go out, so we have to go with her. When you are moving, it's okay, but if not, you feel really cold.
This afternoon the Shanghai meteorological bureau released a warning for frost.
The cold front has been battering the country since last Wednesday. And forecasters have warned that another cold snap could hit China before the weekend.
