Taunton is the county town of Somerset, England. Taunton has over 1,000 years of religious and military history, including a monastery dating back to the 10th century and Taunton Castle, which has origins in the Anglo Saxon period and was later the site of a priory. The Normans then built a stone structured castle, which belonged to the Bishops of Winchester. The current heavily reconstructed buildings are the inner ward, which now houses the Museum of Somerset and the Somerset Military Museum.
Taunton is undergoing a regeneration project with redevelopment of the town centre. Taunton has various transport links which support its central role in economy and commerce. These have included the Grand Western Canal which reached Taunton in 1839 and arrival of the railway in 1842.
Taunton is the site of Musgrove Park Hospital and Somerset County Cricket Club's County Ground and is home to 40 Commando, Royal Marines. Central Taunton is part of the annual West Country Carnival circuit. It hosts the Taunton flower show, which has been held in Vivary Park since 1866. The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office is located on Admiralty Way.

Woodlands Hill, The Quantocks in Autumn. Somerset, DJI Spark Drone
Take a step back in time and look for signs of our ancestors in this mysterious woodland. Disappear into the mixed woodland and climb high onto protected heathland with fantastic views and the chance to encounter some native wildlife.
???????? I LOVE the colours of Autumn! ???????????????????????? The patchwork of colours from above the treeline is stunning. If you've ever driven to Minehead from Bridgwater in Somerset you'll have driven past the carpark for this walk (on your left before the corner as you go down the hill into Holford). I've wanted to explore up here for a long time after driving past it twice daily for work in Minehead years ago. I finally got a chance to park up and head up for a quick walk on the way back from a meeting at Kilve the other day. I hope you enjoy the short video and it inspires you to get outdoors and enjoy the incredible landscape right on our doorstep everywhere in Somerset.
Orchard Roots: Apple Day in the Quantocks
While across the UK orchards have declined by as much as 63% in the past half century, places like Somerset can still boast more than their fair share of apple trees. The Quantock Hills, to the west of Bridgwater, aren't known for their orchards, but studies suggest they might have covered more of the Quantocks than previously thought.
To look at this further, the AHRC funded The Orchard Roots Project, which established a partnership between the Quantock Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Service and the University of Bristol's Department of Historical Studies.
As part of this collaboration, an Apple Heritage Day was held at Fyne Court near Bridgwater. At this community knowledge sharing event, the researchers communicated their findings and encouraged local people to explore the importance of this fruit to the past, present and future of their landscape.

Cothelstone Hill, The Quantock Hills, Somerset (DJI Spark, Drone UAV)
I’ve said this more times than I can remember but we are SO lucky to have the amazingly beautiful Quantock Hills on our doorstep! For those not in our area, The Quantocks are a range of hills west of Bridgwater in Somerset and were England's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) designated in 1956. They constantly inspire me to be outside amongst it for family walks or to capture more of the stunning landscape when I have even a hint of personal time.
Cothelstone Hill is one of the best vantage points in Somerset, allowing 360 degree views from the Mendip Hills in the north, across the Somerset Levels, sweeping over the Blackdown Hill onto the Brendon Hills and into Exmoor National Park.
The hill offers a number of walking trails, picnic facilities and great opportunities for wildlife watching with deer, foxes and badgers all being regularly seen, as well as the resident herd of Exmoor Ponies which graze the hill.

Blue door cottages & Huntstile organic farm, Quantock hill's, Bridgwater, Somerset.
While staying at Blue door cottages, Sherwood, Goathurst, Bridgwater, Somerset, TA5 2DG, we went down the road to Huntstile organic farm for a supper in aid of Open hands India a very good charity that was set up by the owner of Blue door cottages Christine Dougherty. It was a great night out at a fantastic venue supplied free of charge by the owners of Hunstile John Ridout & Lizzie Myers with good music by The night owls jazz band and we raised over 1400 pounds. The next day we went for a short drive to Watchet where we had lunch at a pub close to the harbor, while enjoying an ice cream, a steam train went past. Then we went for a walk across the Quantock Hills, the Sun was shining in a clear blue sky and the views where spectacular. We could not have asked for a better weekend away and we can't wait to go back. A big thank you to Christine, John & Lizzie, see you again soon. Both Blue door cottages and Huntstile organic farm are fantastic places to stay, I highly recommend them both. Hunstile is also a great Wedding venue.
St Edwards of Goathurst, PART IX 'The Bridgwater Visit', Aug 2013
This church is unusually dedicated to Edward, King and Martyr------a young Saxon king murdered by his stepmother--Elfrida in 978 at Corfe in Dorset. There is a picture within the church depicting the murder scene. The church and the village of Goathurst has been greatly influenced by lords of the manor--The Halswells and Kemeys-Tyntes with various monuments inside the church and a burial plot outside.
REVOLUTION 09
The YPFC joined the big team of young volunteers that came together from across the South West to help the National Trust conserve Fyne Court. SYVN and the National Trust hosted the 3 day event which was a mixture of conservation and live bands.
A Three Somerset Churches Visit , Part I,'St Mary & All Saints' with Captions by Sheila, July 20th 2
My Somerset Churches Project continues-----started in Childhood with an old Brownie camera which I still have but not in use. I always enjoyed cycling around the local churches and writing my name in the visitor's book with my friends--we were about 8-12 years old and the lanes were quiet in those days .When I retired many moons later and returned to Somerset after living all over the place, I decided cycling would be good ----and visiting Somerset churches would be the goal---hence I have now visited quite a few but not on a regular basis--just now and then---I drive, cycle and walk to them---its amazing how many there are and how grand they are as well--a massive legacy left to us from the ancestors of the past---Full of history and glorious architecture, furniture, paintings, etc.....Broomfield was a surprise as I drove along extremely narrow lanes dreading another vehicle ever coming in the other direction.I was on my way to Kingston St Mary from North Petherton when I must have taken a wrong turning and suddenly in a very quiet and peaceful hamlet I found St Mary & All Saints and nearby Fyne Court---I will need to return to explore further.
