Truck Plunges into Water at Nanaimo Harbour Terminal
NANAIMO - A major accident has shut down a BC Ferries terminal in Nanaimo.
Just before four o'clock this morning a construction crew was doing paving work at the Nanaimo Harbour Terminal, the docking point for the ferry that runs between Nanaimo and Gabriola Island.
An asphalt truck was backing up on a trestle, when suddenly part of the trestle gave way and the truck plunged into the water beneath.

Nanaimo-Vancouver Ferry Timelapse
Riding the BC Ferry from Nanaimo (Departure Bay) to Horseshoe Bay, and getting caught in fog right away. I had to stop for a bit at one point because the fog was damaging the camera...but as soon as it cleared, I got back out there. Cleared right up!
MV Quinsam HD
A Tour of BC Ferries' MV Quinsam. Built by North Vancouver Shipyards in 1982 for the Ministry of Transportation and Highways, she was based off the design of the 1977 built MV Quinitsa and would also replace her on Route 19 between Gabriola Island and Nanaimo Harbour. Since taking over that Route, she has become a mainstay of Gabriola Island and continues to connect the island to the city of Nanaimo to this day. In 1985, she became part of the BC Ferries fleet after the merge with the Ministry of Highways' saltwater ferries which saw many Gulf Island routes come under BC Ferries' control. She was also the last vessel in the BC Ferries fleet to wear the Expo colours as she was not repainted into the current wave scheme until 2006. For many years the Quinsam ran incident free, however, in more recent times she has been prone to accident. In 2007 while loading at Nanaimo, she pulled away from the berth, causing a pickup truck on the apron to fall into the water. Fortunately the driver of the pickup escaped and was not injured. Human error was blamed. In 2013 while idle overnight at Descanso Bay, a vehicle drove through barriers onto the Quinsam and launched into the water. The driver and the vehicle were recovered several hours later, the driver did not survive. The Quinsam meanwhile only suffered minor damage and was delayed several hours while a police investigation took place. In recent times, the Quinsam has also had a number of hard landings, which often involve hitting the seawall adjacent to the Nanaimo Harbour terminal. Hopefully these incidents are now behind her. In 2009 and 2010, the Quinsam underwent a 2 stage 16 million dollar upgrade which saw her bridge completely rebuilt, her propulsion and electrical systems replaced, her interior redone, deck steel and piping replaced and various other improvements.

-------------------------- About -----------------------------
I've been living in my 1979 Mercedes-Benz James Cook Campervan for two years now. I loved that van, but it was itching me to do my own conversion; alone and without any experience. I sold my old van and started my very own van conversion!
In this Van Build Series I will take you along my journey of building my own home on wheels. I will do everything from insulation, cladding and furniture to the water and electric system. And all that while I'm learning how to do these things on the way. I will go through many hours of work, frustrating moments and defeats in order to achieve the experience of creating things with my own hands. I hope you're enjoying this series and maybe you can even learn something from my ideas & mistakes. - Lenja
