Ep. 10 - Gabriola
This week on Changing Landscapes we explore Gabriola Island for the Thanksgiving Studio Tour. We’ll visit Carol at the Twin Beaches Gallery where lots of local artists are represented. We’ll also visit Elsa in her home studio, one of the artists featured in the tour booklet. And as Gabriola isn’t just about art, we’re also going to take a look at what kind of community spirit a small coastal island has to offer. Welcome to Gabriola.

Off the Starboard Hull is a series of videos about a Canadian couple from Vancouver Island who is planning to sail around the world in August of 2016. We want to take our time, so the trip will last about 10 years with a flexible itinerary. Before we untie the lines, we will be busy exploring the beautiful Pacific Northwest and outfitting out Lagoon 400S2, Muskoka, for our offshore adventures. Please feel free to ask any questions or give us advise in our comment section. We will try our best to answer each and every comment. Also, like or subscribe - we look forward to sharing all the excitement with you!

Canada 2001 - Day 01 - Ferry to Vancouver Island

Oldest Sailboat on the Coast is Getting a Makeover
GABRIOLA ISLAND -- She is 115 years old and about to get an extreme makeover.
Dorothy, a 9-metre sailboat built in Victoria back in 1987, is the oldest known yacht in the pacific northwest, possibly even Canada.
It was built at James Bay's old boatyard and designed by Linton Hope. She cost $1800 to build, a pretty hefty sum for the late 1800's. But it was worth it - Dorothy lasted out on the waters off Vancouver Island for more than one hundred years.
However, she was taken off the waters just under a decade ago and has sat dry in a backroom in BC'S Maritime Museum for nine years.
Until now.
The boat has been sent to Tony Grove's small backyard shipyard on Gabriola Island. Tony plans to spend the fall and winter fixing up the old vessel. He plans to get it sea ready for next June -- in time for Dorothy's 116th Birthday.
The boat will than sail down to Victoria and be on display in Victoria's inner harbour for the Maritime Museum's annual Victoria Classic Boat Festival.
