Gabriola Island Man Says Legal System Standing in His Way to Financial Success
NANAIMO - After toiling away for five years in a home based shop David Norman had perfected his Quazar handheld tazer device, but just as it was about to go to market crown prosecutors gave him a shock. After a short RCMP investigation Norman was charged with possession of a prohibited unlicensed weapon. Tuesday the Gabriola Island man pleaded not guilty to the charge in a Nanaimo court room . Norman calls the charge unfair as he maintains his product is strictly for personal protection and is far less harmful than a police issue tazer. Norman also says his case could set a precedent for aspiring inventors across the country.
Crown prosecutors are prepared to move forward in their case against the Gabriola Island inventor, and have indicated they will call at least two RCMP witnesses including one tazer expert. The trial is set for mid December in Nanaimo.
