Indonesian Food: Eating Gado-Gado and Selat Solo (Bistik Jawa) travel food video transcript:
So it is dinnertime here in Solo, Indonesia and we're trying a new restaurant that was highly recommended on TripAdvisor. We're eating a place called Warung Selat Mbak Lies. Hopefully I got that right. It is a pretty long name. We're really enjoying the restaurant so far. It is very quirky and there is a lot going on on the walls. Like there is ceramics and plates and arts. And we're sitting on these low to the ground tables. There is all of these snacks on table which I think you can purchase if you get hungry until your food gets here. So yeah, we've placed our order. We kind of had to guess what we're getting but is should be tasty regardless so we're waiting for that to arrive.
Gado-Gado. Gado Gado. Yes. Selat Bastik.
So I am super impressed because our food showed up in record time. Yeah, that was awesome. I mean we're really hungry and the food was at our table within minutes. In like two minutes. That was awesome.
So what are you having? So I'm starting off with Gado-Gado which is basically a vegetable and compressed rice salad and it comes in a peanut sauce and although this food isn't unique to this particular region of Indonesia, I mean it is one of those foods that you can find almost anywhere in Indonesia but we thought we'd show it to you anyways. And it is a popular street snack as well. You can try it in restaurants and on the street.
So I'm going for I'm trying to just get a bite here with lots of peanut sauce, a bit of a cracker and some of the vegetables. Let's see.
First bite.
What makes this so good is the peanut sauce.
The peanut sauce is amazing. It is like you get that strong peanut taste but it is also really sweet as well. Sam, loves peanut butter so I knew he would enjoy it.
Is it sweet? It is very sweet and then you have like the contrast of the crunchiness of the cracker and then the basically the vegetables that go along with it.
Why don't you take your spoon and swirl it around and let's see what else is in there. I see some beansprouts. Yeah, there is beansprouts, it looks like there is lettuce. It looks like there is all kinds of things going on.
No, it is not an egg. No.
Let's break it in half. Or is it meat?
The mystery.
It is an egg! .
Hahaha. It is a very dark egg. It has been cooked in soy sauce or something so. I love this. Yeah, one of my favorite Indonesian dishes for sure.
My food is here as well. We ordered something called Selat Bistik Jawa or Selat Solo so if you take a look down here it is basically a braised beef tenderloin with a watery gravy and it also comes with vegetables. We have some green beans, some carrots, it looks like some mashed potato here and there is like chips kind of sprinkled on top and what else. Other vegetables. Some onions. So apparently this is like a twist on western slash dutch food that has been like adopted here in Indonesia and just changed to their taste. Yeah, it is like with Javanese ingredients. Yeah. So let's try this. Dig right in. You know what I'm going to start with this egg. Okay. This dark egg.
I've never had such a dark egg before. And apparently the soy sauce is quite sweet.
Is it sweet?
That is a sweet gravy.
I mean it is quite watery. It is almost like you're having a soup. It is like a main dish but kind of looks like a soup. So yeah. Let's get a bit more.
Some mashed potatoes, some chips and maybe some beef.
Okay so time for price point. Yeah, so we're stuffed. And that came to again under five US dollars. So really good value, we ate a lot and now we're ready to go back home.

My amazing first trip to Bali Indonesia for the best Balinese food
My first trip to Bali Indonesia, another food and travel adventure. Bali is quite unique with great beaches, great weather and plenty of natural sites to visit. There's endless amounts of accommodation, from a few dollars a day to 5 star luxury villas or hotels. Watch the Chef cook a Grilled Fish Jimbaran style. I stayed in Kuta then traveled through Legian, Seminyak and finished up in Canggu. The people are friendly and welcoming. I'll definitely go again. See my next travel vlog for an incredible villa with private pool.

Pasar Senggol, Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia
The night market in Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia, known as Pasar Senggol is an amazing place to eat a range of different Indonesian Balinese street food!
One evening, we headed over to the market at about 5 pm to start eating, and in this video I’ll show you everything I ate on this Balinese street food tour.
Babi guling - Babi guling, or Balinese style roast pig, is one of the ultimate things you have to eat, especially if you enjoy pork, when you’re in Bali. I started the street food tour off with a plate of babi guling. I was alright, but could have been better had it been hot and fresher.
30,000 IDR ($2.20) per plate
Sweets - Along with full meals, you’ll find an abundance of Indonesian street food snacks and desserts. Klepon was my favorite.
1,000 IDR ($0.7) per box
Nasi ayam campur - This stall served one of the best single plates of food I had in Bali, ayam betutu and some mixed chicken all over a plate of rice with all the toppings and mixes. The food was sensational, packed with flavor.
25,000 IDR ($1.84)
Tipat cantok - Similar to another common Indonesian street food called gado gado, tipat cantok includes rice cakes and bean sprouts in a peanut sauce. It was pretty good, and I enjoyed how you could watch her making it in front of you.
7,000 IDR ($0.51)
Serombotan - Finally, to end this Indonesian street food tour in Bali, I had a serving of something called serombotan, a delicious mixture of vegetables and coconut and shrimp paste. It was surprisingly very good and flavorful.
5,000 IDR ($0.37)
