A quick tour of Hampi | Must visit place in Karnataka | Tata Nexon roadtrip
All about must visit places around Hampi in just 5 minutes.
Steps Together present the trailer of the new vlog series, Hampi - A Time travel.
Hampi is one of the most popular destinations in India. Situated on the banks of Tungabhadra river in Ballari district of northern Karnataka, the place attracts a huge crowd from all over the world. Hampi was the glorious capital of mighty Vijayanagara empire in the 13-14th century. Historical stories state that Hampi was a very prosperous and wealthy town filled with extraordinary temples, farms and trading markets. By 1500 CE, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the world’s second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing, and probably India’s richest at that time.
The Vijayanagara empire was defeated by the Muslim Sultanates in the 15th century. The precious monuments and temples were destructed very badly during the fall of the Vijayanagara empire. The Archaeological Survey of India conducted excavation in the area and the results can now be seen in the form of ruins of this great empire. The group of monuments of Hampi is declared as UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986 and the monuments are well preserved.
Surrounded by hills filled with huge boulders, lush green agricultural lands, ancient priceless monuments at each and every corner of the town, Hampi is a must visit place in India. The rich temples are scattered all around the town and need proper planning to avoid missing any of the attractions.
The Tungabhadra river broadly classifies Hampi into two parts – 1) Hampi center side (Kamalapura side) and 2) Anegundi side. Hampi center side contains almost all the tourist destinations and is usually filled with tourists. Anegundi side is on the other side of Thungabhadra river and is usually less crowded. It is often called the hippie island.
The major Hampi center attractions (the one on the Kamalapura side) can be grouped as follows. The places within each group can be covered by walk:
Group 1 – Hampi Bazar, Virupaksha temple, Hemakuta Hill temples, Sasivekalu Ganesha, Kadlekalu Ganesha, Monolithic bull, and Krishna temple.
Group 2 – Ugra Narasimha and Badavi Linga (these are on the way from Royal enclosure to Virupaksha temple)
Group 3 – Royal Enclosure (Queen’s bath, Mahanavami Dibba, King’s Audience Hall, Stepped Tank, and Public tank), Hazara Rama Temple, and Zenana Enclosure (Basement of queen’s palace, Lotus Mahal, Elephant’s stables, and watchtowers)
Group 4 – Monolithic Bull, Mathanga Hill, and Achyutaraya temple
Group 5 – Vittala Temple complex
On the Anegundi side, the main attractions are Anjanadri Hill, Gagan Mahal, and Sanapura Lake.

GAGAN MAHAL PALACE | PENUKONDA | Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh
The legendary 16th century royal palace located in Penukonda, known as Gagan Mahal, built during the Vijayanagar period which was the second capital of Emperor Sri Krishna Devaraya, has now an eye-feasting look after getting a facelift and restoration of its pristine glory by the Department of Archeology and Museums.
The architecture of Gagan Mahal is a combination of Hindu and Persian and the same is now renovated by the department of Archaeology without disturbing its original beauty. Once resembling eerie, ghost-infested palace shown in horror movies, Gagan Mahal now houses a photo exhibition reflecting the history of Penukonda, the second capital of the legendary emperor.
It was built by a combination of Indo-Persian architectural style adopted by Vijayanagara kings. The palace was built without a single rafter, a unique specimen architecture.
Because of its ancient Jain history and presence of many temples it is one of the most revered places for Jains. In the Tamil jain tradition, this is counted as one of the four Jain centers of learning (Vidystahana) i.e. a Bhattaraka matha which are Delhi, Kolhapur, Jina Kanchi and Penukonda. The famous Pache Parsvanath Swamy Temple, with idol of Parsvanath containing a single green coloured stone (Pacha) is located here.[6][7] According to the inscription on the image, it was consecreted in A.D. 1359, by a disciple of Mula Sangh Nandisangha’s Balatkara Gana, Saraswathi Gachha, Kondakundanvaya‘s Priyarajaguru Mandalacharya Maghanandi Siddantha Deva. It was once the seat of a Jain Bhattaraka, established in A.D. 1359. The seat became extinct and the local Jain population declined. However the temple is well preserved. Also located her is the historic Ajitnath temple from the same period. After renovation by the Gowdanakunte family of Amarapura, it was preserved by Muni 108 Sri Ajithakeerthi Maharaj. After his samdhi in 1966, the temple was in poor condition byt has recently been renovated by the Dharmasthala institution.
The famous Babaiah Dargah makes this place venerable to Muslims as well. Hazrath Baba Fakruddin was a great Sufi Saint of 12th century. Purportedly before coming to Penukonda, he was a king of Sistan and Shahpur in Iran. Legend says that he was searching for a place to settle and his Guru gave him a dry twig and said to him: ..wherever this twig will bloom to a big plant stay there... He planted the twig and slept under a tree only to awake and saw it become a beautiful plant and he stayed there. He is called Babaiah by the local people and due to the love and respect he garnered, many men of various faiths have taken his name over centuries.
Kumbakarna garden here spreading over 5 acres has a Gigantic statue of the sleeping Kumbhakarna, measuring 142 feet in length and 32 feet in height into whose cavernos belly one can walk. Several asuras are seen trying to wake up the sleeping Gaint, depicting the famous story of this in invincible brother of Ravana in Ramayana.
