Haunted theatre and bingo hall
The Victoria theatre, Salford is a theatre in greater Manchester England.
The theatre officially opened 10th December 1900 and was last in use as a bingo hall in 2008, the original capacity was 2,000 seated, this was increased to 3,000 in 1910. It has been placed on the market by its current owners palatial leisure limited.
1958 - 1971
Following the cinemas closure in July 1958 the theatre was used as a clothing / furniture store with some performances by repertory groups, including venture productions and pantomimes being staged during the 1960s.
From the mid 1960s until the summer of 1971, the theatre was owned by a Salford business man, councillor Sam Goldberg.
Goldberg allowed repertory groups such as venture productions to put on productions rent free.
He also used the theatre as winter headquarters for his own Southport repertory company.
Goldberg tried unsuccessfully to sell the freehold to Salford city council in the hope that they might operate the building as a civic theatre and a art centre.
Talks stalled after it was estimated that the cost of modernising the building could be about £80,000, the theatre was running at a loss at the time of Goldberg’s death. Councillor Cecil franks, the chairman said it was hopeless to try to maintain a “Victorian relic” of this size in its present form.
Jason Manford First World Problems
Jason Manford. First World Problems is his 2013 tour. This poem is my glowing review! Brilliant!
Jason Manford's Website
Tonight, 22nd May 2013, Jason performed his First World Problems as a work in progress at Kendal Brewery Arts Centre. After he got off stage, he was straight off to Berwick Upon Tweed and he'd already done Lancaster! If this is just the warm up, the main show will be outstanding - look forward to seeing it a venue near you, or perhaps on TV/DVD in the future!
#FirstWorldProblems have never been so funny! :-)
Jason Manford First World Problems Poem
Tonight I had the pleasure of my very first comedy gig
And delighted to say I cut my teeth on the North-West's Mr Big.
Now that's not me being personal, he's a celebrity comedy act
So when I call him Mr Big, I am just stating a well known fact!
Yes, it was Mr Jason Manford, who'd chosen Kendal's Brewery Arts
As the ideal place to warm up, before his main tour starts.
He was born and bred in Manchester, so he'd not had far to come
Bringing with him a cheeky smile and a proper northern sense of fun.
Now the poor chap had the sniffles, but he soldiered bravely through;
The show's called First World Problems (a little irony for you)
But I have to say, it's worth a watch, and after seeing him on TV
To get to watch him in the flesh, was like going into HD.
His observational humour, is well thought and on the money
And his unscripted audience banter, is very quick and terribly funny.
This night was sold out months ago, so I had high hopes & expectations
And you'll be pleased to know he delivered an evening of Great British titillation!
Just a microphone, a stage and Mr Manford; who could ask for anything else?
He needs no bells and whistles, as the comedy speaks for itself.
It was great that he came to Kendal, and I really enjoyed the show.
If he comes to a venue near you, then I wholly recommend that you go!
So, I was thrilled to get to meet him, and he seems a lovely man
Who made time to pose for pictures and interact with his fans.
He really is hilarious, so I'm happy to give a glowing review
And whilst I am still beaming, Jason, a great big thanks to you!
Jason Manford has been featured Live At The Apollo, and was the anchor for BBC Television's One Show. He's also been seen at the Royal Gala Performance, watched by Her Majesty The Queen no less, and on channel 4. He has performed stand-up at venues all over the UK and achieved lots of other impressive stuff - not bad for a boy from Salford!!
So proud that Jason Manford himself has seen this :-) And he even shared it on his facebook page - what a genuinely lovely chap!
On April 11th 2014 Jason Manford will return to Kendal, with the complete, polished First World Problems tour - tickets available now

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
