FIRST DAY IN SRI LANKA · GALLE FACE GREEN & GETTING TO COLOMBO FROM THE AIRPORT | TRAVEL VLOG #49
We are finally in Sri Lanka, and we fell in love the moment we stepped out of the plane. On further thought, I fell in love when we flew over the Sri Lankan hill country. What a beautiful journey! Oh well, back to reality and to this video. We landed in Colombo, and after talking to a few taxi drivers we started getting a bit worried. We planned on taking the bus, but they told us it was a two hour drive to the city, and we were definitely not up for that. Fortunately for us, this wasn't our first time arriving in a new country, so I had looked everything up beforehand, and the bus journey was only supposed to take 40 minutes. We waved goodbye to the taxi drivers and went to search for the bus. It was easy enough to find and even though we had a lot of luggage, there was no problem whatsoever. We got on the bus and waited for a little while. We bought our tickets on the bus and paid 130 rupees each (about $1), and 40 minutes later we were in Colombo. Easy peasy.
We took a tuktuk from the bus station and negotiated a price before we jumped in – a few days later we found out that there are actually metered tuktuks in Sri Lanka. Had we known that at the time, we would have taken one of those and saved a little, but we managed to get a pretty good deal so that was okay. We paid 350 rupees to get to our hotel (meter would been 200-250), but at first he wanted 1500 rupees which is way way way too much. Our host told us that some of his guests had paid 2200 rupees for the 200 rupee drive. The tuktuk drivers can be a challenge, but there are so many tuktuks, so you can always just find another one (preferably a metered one so you don't have to haggle), and most of the drivers are nice (once you are done negotiating).
We only had a few hours of daylight left when we got to the apartment, so we decided to go to Galle Face Green to catch the sunset. We didn't really know what Galle Face Green was – we just knew it was by the sea, so we thought it'd be a good place to watch the sunset.
It really was, and we had such a lovely time there. Everyone has told us to avoid Colombo, but I have to say – it's not that bad. It's actually a nice place to spend a few days if you know where to go and what to see, so stay tuned for our videos from Colombo!

Hi there! I'm Anne-Li – Danish girl, globetrotter, travel vlogger, blogger and digital nomad traveling the world with my partner in crime and long-term boyfriend Mathias. Spending a month in Budapest every summer taught us that traveling does not have to be expensive and that slow travel is the way to go – for us. We have been traveling full-time since September 2016, and we usually base ourselves in one place for at least a month or two. This way of traveling is not only budget friendly – it also means that we can take our time and really explore and enjoy the place we're in. We eat local food, shop at local markets, meet local people and enjoy experiencing different cultures – all the while seeking out the best wifi and exploring everything there is to explore. Everyday is another adventure, and we’d love for you to be part of it!
Let's go!

Galle Face Green, Colombo, Sri Lanka
This is the Green (mostly brown these days) on the first July 2018.Colombo Port City is coming along slowly and nicely with its Chinese construction. The slightly less hot weather is due to the Southern winter having slight effects here. The action of the evening will start about three hours after this video; it is about 15:00 hrs on a Sunday. I am yet to ascertain whether or not the yellow sun of years ago has really turned white. Really?

Galle Face Green | Amazing Ocean side Urban Park | Colombo | Sri Lanka |
Galle Face is a ocean-side urban park, which stretches
for 500 m along the coast, in the heart of Colombo,
the financial and business capital of Sri Lanka.
The Galle Face Green is currently a 5 hectare ribbon
strip of land between Galle Road and the Indian Ocean
which is now the largest open space in Colombo.
This is a popular destination for children, vendors, teenagers,
lovers, kite flyers, merrymakers and all those who want to indulge
in their favorite pastimes next to the sea under the open sky.
The promenade was initially laid out in 1859 by Governor
Sir Henry George Ward, although the original Galle Face Green
extended over a much larger area than is seen today.
The Galle Face Green was initially used for horse racing
and as a golf course, but was also used for cricket,
polo, football, tennis and rugby.
Galle Face Green originally extended over a much larger area
than exists today. Records indicate that it was bounded to the north
by Beira Lake, to the west by the Indian Ocean, whilst to the south
by the Galle Face Hotel and to the east by St Peter's Church.
The Galle Face Green was initially laid out
by the Dutch as a means to enable their cannons
a strategic line of fire against the Portuguese.
In 1856 the then Governor of British Ceylon, Sir Henry George Ward
authorised the construction of a 1 mile promenade along the oceanside
of the Galle Face Green, for ladies and children to saunter and
‘take in the air’. The promenade was subsequently completed in 1859.
Horse racing began in Galle Face in the early 1820s, during the
time of the then British Governor Sir Edward Barnes (1776–1838).
In 1879, a number of British expatriates introduced golf
to Ceylon playing on the Galle Face Green.
On 30 June 1879 the first official rugby match in Ceylon
was played at Galle Face Green between the newly formed
Colombo Football Club and rest of the world’s teams.
The first Royal–Thomian cricket match played between
Royal College, Colombo and S. Thomas' College was played
on 15–17 July 1879 at Galle Face Green.

Galle Face Green,Colombo, Sri Lanka in May
This is Gallle Face Green in May. The southern hemisphere's winter approaches and Sri Lanka benefits marginally. The heat nevertheless is overpowering. These ordinary citizens of Colombo have for the most part little experience of the world outside the territorial waters they can see over the Broadwalk and rely on politicians to serve their interests; the politicians concentrate on lining their pockets and making deals with rich foreigners of which their own people know nothing. What is their future?
Galle Face Green, Colombo, Sri Lanka on 30 December 2018
I have been given to understand that, statistically, 30 December is the coolest day of the year in Colombo. Be that as it may, nobody is wearing even the lightest of pullovers on that date this year. Sri Lanka is a backwater, albeit not a quiet one, and the island is not involved in the great dramas of further afield, particularly in the Middle East.

Galle Face Green in Sri Lanka: History and the Name
The originally planned Galle face extended over a much larger area than what can be seen today. The promenade was initially laid out by the Dutch for a military purpose. They used it as a means to enable their cannons a strategic line of fire against the Portuguese. One version of how the name Galle Face is derived, is that it is from the original Dutch name for the fortifications.
After many years of planning and hard work the promenade was subsequently completed in 1859.

Galle Face Green, Colombo, Sri Lanka
It is Sunday, January 5, 2920. The world outside this particular tropical island is seething with the after-effects of a US targeted assassination of an Iranian general and the pundits are counting the possible allies Iran could go to for a war with the USA. Here on Galle Face Green all that seems far away and the unusual daytime heat in January is the principal worry. That plus the new government of Sri Lanka. This spot will hot up this evening with night-time revelries but at present all is quiet.
Galle Face Green, Colombo, Sri Lanka
This is Galle Face Green, Colombo, Sri Lanka on Sunday 11 November 2018. In some countries it is Remembrance Day but here, it is generally otherwise. These are the ordinary people of Colombo with their cares and worries suspended for a Sunday. Most jobs carry no pensions and, therefore, old age poverty is a problem. The people respond to this by placing themselves in proximity to relatives who are still working. The lack of private sector pensions fuels crime and delinquency but the authorities here support a negative conditioning social policy which results in widespread grievances. What makes it worse is that the people in power are themselves corrupt and the underlings know this. Anyway, this is Galle Face Brown on Remembrance Day 2018 while the locals wait for whether or not Bill Gates will snuff them all out with his beloved vaccinations. Amen.

Galle Face Beautiful Beach Colombo Srilanka in 4K
#GalleFaceBeachColombo, #ColomboCity, #ColomboBeach, #Srilanka: The video captures the beautiful Galle Face Beach of Colombo. Located close to the centre of city, gets busy during the evening. The green sea water with aggressive waves creates a beautiful setting; though summer afternoon must be avoided, gets extremely hot & humid. Taj Samudra, located across the road, overlooking the beach has become a popular landmark of Galle Face. The video also shows some glimpse of Buddha Temple; overall the city is well planned, clean, and well maintained, beach further adds to the beauty.
