THE VENICE BIENNALE PROJECTS 1988-2011
13/10/2012 - 24/02/2013
@ Mudam Luxembourg - Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean
Since 1988, Luxembourg has regularly participated in one of the most important international contemporary art events: the Venice Biennale, one of the characteristics of which is the hosting of national pavilions, inherited from the model of 19th century International Exhibitions. The history of Luxembourg's participation in the Venice Biennale reads like a veritable success story.
The first participations only offered Luxembourg's artists limited exhibition conditions: confined to the Padiglione Italia, which at the time hosted countries without pavilions. Then, in 1995 what appeared to be an inextricable situation - the eviction of countries without pavilions from the Giardini, the main site for the Biennale - turned to Luxembourg's advantage. Finally, in 2003 to everyone's surprise, the Luxembourg pavilion, installed since 1999 in a 15th century building known as the Ca' del Duca, was awarded the Golden Lion for best national participation.
The exhibition Atelier Luxembourg - The Venice Biennale Projects 1988-2011 retraces the exceptional development of the presence of a small country in this international contemporary art event. As far as possible, it reconstructs the artistic projects as they were displayed in Venice, with the original artworks and the necessary adaptations for their exhibition in a museum context. Presented are the projects by Patricia Lippert and Moritz Ney (1988), Marie-Paule Feiereisen (1990), Jean-Marie Biwer and Bertrand Ney (1993), the pavilion Potemkin Lock by Bert Theis (1995), a reinterpretation of the installation Magazzino by Luc Wolff (1997), Chewing and Folding in Venice by Simone Decker (1999), the installation Casa Mia by Doris Drescher (2001), the exhibition Air Conditioned by Su-Mei Tse (2003), Mondo Veneziano a movie by Antoine Prum (2005), the video installation Collision Zone by Gast Bouschet and Nadine Hilbert (2009) and the installation Le Cercle fermé by Martine Feipel and Jean Bechameil (2011).
Because it was intimately linked to the space of the Ca' del Duca itself, the project Endless Lust by Jill Mercedes (2007) is only presented in the exhibition in the form of documentation.
The various presentations are accompanied by archive documents and filmed interviews specially produced for the occasion, in which the artists cast a retrospective gaze on their Venetian experience. The considerable development of Luxembourg's art scene over the last 25 years is indirectly reflected through the Biennales.
This exhibition is part of the framework of Atelier Luxembourg, an initiative including several exhibitions and projects focussed on artistic creativity in Luxembourg since 1945, developed in partnership with Casino Luxembourg - Forum d'art contemporain, the Centre national de l'audiovisuel (Dudelange), the Musée d'histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg, the Musée national d'histoire et d'art and Villa Vauban - Musée d'art de la Ville de Luxembourg.
Luxembourg's 1956 participation in the Venice Biennale is currently on display at the Musée national d'histoire et d'art in Luxembourg (21/09/2012 - 20/01/2013).

Small World - The Painter | euromaxx
We look at the works of French painter Luc Grateau who paints portraits of people on subway tickets. Grateau does this while traveling the Paris subway system: He opens up his hand-sized artboard and paints portraits of his fellow passengers on it. Most don't mind. He also sketches at the Louvre: There he is copying some of the world's greatest paintings in mini-form.

Bruxelles City 2003 by Gg : Grand Place , Manneken Pisse , Galerie du Roi , ... ( 2003/11/23 )
23 Novembre 2003.

STUX GALLERY - Kosyo Minchev, Nicolas Touron
Kosyo Minchev
Lambs and Landscapes
Stux Gallery is pleased to announce New York based Bulgarian artist Kosyo Minchev's
fifth solo show. Known for his provocative re-conceptualizations of classical painting
and sculpture, Kosyo's new group of works continue to demand awareness of
history's effects on our visual judgments, and challenge us to reconcile personal
preconceptions and the necessity to pursue an informed consensus.
His Lambs series of aqua-resin lamb heads are docile, stately and gently
mysterious. The lamb heads are not busts, but rather cropped sections that still carry
an imaginary presence of the entire body. The pristine color and smoothness of the
medium evoke classical tenets and a sense of timelessness, accentuating their fleeting
innocence and our current society's long departure from classical idealism. Abstract,
geometric compositions occur throughout the series to propose a puzzling, co-
dependent relationship between materiality and intangible thoughts.
Kosyo's expressive marks record both fleshly fur texture and the gruesomeness of
suffering, and distort the contour to transport the seemingly representational works
to the realm of conceptualism and expressionism. Simultaneously, they inject human-
like emotions that are quiet but intensely tangible. These lambs do not claim to
simulate the human condition. Rather, the animal-nature resists blunt projections of
our immediate personal understandings, and makes emotions we detect more
fundamental and intimate.
His Landscapes paintings continue to negotiate the relationship between the artist,
the medium, artistic subject matter and the overarching intellectual history. He paints
inside silicone rather than over it, and creates images that could be stretched and
molded along with its malleable medium. These paintings communicate with gravity
and hang without the rigid integrity imposed by frames and canvas stretchers. They
are deeply indebted to the Romantics' majestic, sublime portraits of nature, but are
soft and rubbery to the touch. The gestural brushwork is viewed through a
transparent layer that filters out the three dimensional gustos of the brushstrokes and
activates the viewer's imagination. While the silicone cover denies unrestricted access
to the painting inside, it initiates refreshing examinations of our default ways of
seeing, the nature of painting and the course of art history.
Kosyo advocates for the necessity of labels and categories that aid our
understanding of the visual world by creating works that confound these concepts --
his paintings map out the middle ground between the permanent past and the
ephemeral present, the psychological and the universal.
Kosyo Minchev is a New York City based artist who was born in Bulgaria and studied
at the National Academy of Fine Art in Sofia. He has shown throughout Europe and
the United States including the Herringen Kunstverein in Germany, the Wittgenstein
House in Vienna and the Queens Museum of Art in New York. Kosyo's exhibitions
have been reviewed in many publications including The New York Times; the Village
Voice; Sculpture Magazine; Woxx, Zeitung vum Lëtzebuerger Vollek and
D'Lëtzebuerger Land in Luxembourg; and KULTURA Newspaper in Russia. This will be
his fifth solo show at the Stux Gallery, NY.
Nicolas Touron
Play Ground
Stux Gallery is pleased to announce Play Ground, an exhibition of new paintings and
sculptures by Nicolas Touron. Born in France and based in New York, Touron creates
expansive, detailed and spontaneous canvases that zoom into familiar yet completely
alien worlds. Influenced by Pieter Bruegel, The Hudson River School, early works of
Jean Dubuffet, Japanese woodblock prints, or the works of Julie Mehretu and
Anthony Gormley, Touron toys with the dimension of time and the instant visual
accessibility of paintings by inventing his own dynamic method for storytelling.
Touron begins each painting by drawing black outlines of his composition, and filling
each shape using flat, opaque paint markers. Found, industrial colours pulsate
vibrantly against the controlled edges, and emit energy and anxiety that confound the
paintings' coloring-book innocence. His expressly narrative images tell stories that
neither begin nor end. It is difficult to decide whether they depict actions trapped by
painting's two-dimensionality, or intense motion at its breath-stopping moment of
stillness, akin to a roller coaster's momentary pause atop the tallest hill, the point of
highest potential energy.
