The Magic of Silk, Gallery of Caribbean Art, Speightstown, Barbados. Dec 9 to Jan 5
DEBORAH YOUNGLAO is a mostly self-taught artist who uses the luxurious fibers of silk to portray her love of nature. Her background is a diverse one: in addition to her native Caribbean island of Trinidad, Deborah has lived in Barbados, Ireland, Canada and 4 states in the US, including her current home of North Carolina. Flora, fauna, colors, shapes and lines inspired by nature come to life on shimmering silk painted with vibrant liquid dyes.
Although her formal education was in Science (she holds a Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of the West Indies and a Masters in Oceanography from McGill University), Deborah's creative side led her to express her fascination with nature in an artistic rather than a scientific manner. Deborah was introduced to dye-painting (painting with dyes instead of paint) on silk in 1997, and thus started a love affair which has grown into a full-time calling. Her workspace has grown from a corner of the dining room table to a dedicated studio that holds up to eight students for workshops.
Deborah painted silk creations become either scarves, the ultimate fashion accessory, or fine art, where the softness and luminosity of the silk, coupled with her bold colors, add panache to any décor.

TWO YOUNG BARBADIAN ARTISTS SELECTED FOR HAVANA AND VENICE BIENNIALS
The work of two second generation young Barbadian Artists, Alberta Whittle and Ewan Atkinson, will be featured at major international Art exhibitions in May this year. Ewan Atkinson, is the son of artist Arthur Atkinson and his wife Hetty, a founder member of the Barbados Dance Theatre. He has been selected to be included in the 12th edition of the Havana Biennial. This is an extremely prestigious event and the major biennial in the region. The invitation to Ewan Atkinson came as a direct result of the visit to Barbados of Jose Manuel Noceda Fernandez, one of the curatorial team of the biennial. The visit to Barbados was organized by the National Cultural Foundation to expose Mr. Noceda to the contemporary art taking place in Barbados.
Ewan's work has already been in more than one international exhibition in 2015. The exhibition 'Colonial Afterlives' was at the Salamanca Arts Centre in Tasmania, Australia. His work was also in 'Alles Maskerade' at the MEWO Kunsthalle in Memmingen, Germany. It was shown in a German magazine as well as on German TV. In 2010 Ewan Atkinson, Ras Ishi Butcher and Ras Akyem Ramsay represented Barbados in the Liverpool Biennial, UK.
Alberta Whittle is the first Barbadian artist whose work will be seen in the Venice Biennale, which started in 1895 and is the most influential of all the biennials. Alberta is a PhD student at the University of Western Cape, South Africa. She is the daughter of artist Nick Whittle and curator of the Queen's Park Gallery Janice Whittle. Alberta and South African Artist Farieda Nazier will present a performance piece, 'Right of Admission', in the Johannesburg Pavilion. This is a unit separate from the government funded South Africa National Pavilion; performance or film artists exclusively make up the Johannesburg Pavilion.
As early as 2010 her promise was recognized in Edinburgh College of Art Centenary Exhibition when she was chosen as one of the 25 Alumni making a significant contribution in the world of Art. In 2014, she was curator of the Caribbean (including some Barbadian) and South African artists for 'FRAMES', Glasgow International. Other international exhibitions in 2014 included 'Transforming Spaces' at the National Gallery of the Bahamas included a joint video with Alberta and Nick Whittle. During her participation in BOZAR, an International Biennial of Photography and Lens based Media, in Brussels, Alberta was interviewed on FrenchTV5.
The majority of her solo exhibitions have been in Barbados. She successfully applied for Arts and Sports funding for a triangular project which will involve Barbados, South Africa and the United Kingdom. She has been acting curator of the Queen's Park Gallery in 2009-10.

Three Generations Art - Barbados
It is certainly a family affair when it comes to the art in the Best of Barbados Gift Shops! The beautiful art and giftware designs by company founder, Jill Walker, are now complimented by those of her daughter, Sue Trew...and Sue's daughter Holly. It makes their shops unique!
To celebrate their Three Generations of Art, this gifted family exhibited together for the first time at the Gallery of Caribbean Art in Speightstown from 25th March to 12th April 2012. The show lived up to expectations of being vibrant and colourful with a wonderful variety of skilful imagery - paintings inspired from simple events like evening walks on the beach, trips to buy fish and observations while driving, to more exotic situations like sailing trans-Atlantic on a Tall Ship and volunteering on a game park in Botswana.
