Chance Brothers - Lighting the World
For about 150 years the Smethwick Company of Chance Brothers was one of the most important and innovative pioneers of glassmaking in the world.
Such was its importance Chance Brothers was rightly called The greatest glass manufacturer in Britain.
In 1851 the company produced the glazing for the Crystal Palace which housed the Great Exhibition as well as providing the opal glass for the four faces of the Westminster Clock Tower housing Big Ben.
At about this time, Chance Brothers became the most important engineer of the lighthouses which were built around Britain and throughout the British Empire. Today these lighthouses remain a famous part of seascapes all over the world.
In this short programme, Dr Malcolm Dick, Editor in chief of History West Midlands discusses the growth, achievements and decline of one of the Black Country's most important manufacturers.

The Smethwick Engine at Thinktank 2012
The Smethwick Engine was built by James Watt around 1779 and is the world's oldest working steam engine. Once used to pump water through the canal system in Birmingham, it is now an icon of the industrial revolution. Due to the age of the engine, it can only be powered by steam a few times a year and this is one of those occasions in April 2012. The commentary that you can hear is by Dr Jim Andrew, one of the leading experts on the operations and history of the Smethwick Engine.

Malcolm X visits Marshall Street in Smethwick, Birmingham, UK

Malcolm X came to Smethwick during his visit to Britain because it had come to symbolise racism in Britain. In the 1964 General Election the Conservative MP Peter Griffiths had won the seat of Smethwick allegedly using racist campaigning. It was widely reported that stickers with the slogan If you want a n***** for a neighbour vote Liberal or Labour had been distributed by his supporters. The victory and the views of Griffiths prompted the Prime Minister Harold Wilson to describe him as a parliamentary leper. In December 1964 Conservative members of the local council asked the council's housing department to buy any houses that became vacant on Marshall Street to prevent black families moving in. A plan which the council agreed to implement early in 1965. Malcolm X had been a spokesman for the Nation of Islam but had left in 1964. On February 21 1965 Malcolm X was shot dead in New York by members of the Nation of Islam with FBI having an underhand in it.
Nearing Smethwick saw riots a few years ago.
Malcolm X was assassinated 50 years ago this month (February 21st 1965). He would have been almost 90 years old. But he left us when his time was due. A fearless, courageous and sincere man who will never be forgotten by those who stand with the oppressed.
We will remember him today as we did yesterday as our beloved brother.
We remember him and appreciate the sacrifices he made not only for the African Americans but all people across the world. May God grant him mercy and the highest station in paradise. Ameen.

The Black Country - The Forgotten Country - Part One
This is a short experimental film I created for my final major project in BTEC National Diploma Interactive Media at college. The film depicts areas of the Black Country in the West Midlands of the United Kingdom. I shot the majority of the footage on DV tape but some of the footage in the second half of the film was shot on to Super8 film which I developed and filmed from a projector; on to DV. I had to split the film into two parts because of the length so check out both parts one and two. Comments and queries are welcome.
