This Korean Slum in Busan Turned into a Tourist Hotspot ♦ Gamcheon Culture Village
Today we explore Gamcheon Culture Village (부산 감천문화마을) in Busan. What was once was a religious community turned into a place of refuge for civilians during the Korean War. Over the course of five decades, the village became a slum until recently. Rather than demolishing the structures and starting from scratch, Gamcheon Village was painted in diverse colors. With the increased pedestrian traffic, crimes rates dropped and became a tourist hotspot. The narrow alleys and stairs make for a photographic stroll with friends, family and even as a lone traveler! Come join us as we visit colorful Gamcheon Cultural Village in Busan, Korea to try unique Korean street food. Visiting Gamcheon Culture Village (감천문화마을 - 甘川文化마을) is one of the most popular areas to visit for tourist given that it offers incredible views, fascinating colorful architecture and winding hilly streets. It is also an okay place to try Korean street food in Busan.

In terms of the Busan street food we had the following items:
1) Bungeo-ppang (붕어빵) - Fish-shaped battered waffle with sweet red-bean paste inside
2) Hot Bar (핫바) - Deep-fried fish paste with various sauces on top
3) Korean melon chamoe (참외) - also known as the oriental melon
4) Frozen beer - beer with a malt like frozen soft serve on top
5) Jellies with chocolate sauce and peanut/soy bean toppping
After checking out some great vantage points located in Gamcheon Cultural village we walked a bit and then hopped into a cab trying some craft beers at Galmegi brewing company. Overall, this was some of the worst Korean street food I've ever had but still an interesting experience.

Trying UNIQUE KOREAN STREET FOOD in Gamcheon Cultural Village - Busan, Korea:
Hey guys! We are Samuel and Audrey, a vlogging travel couple from Canada. In this travel channel we share our travel and food vlogs while touring the world.
Our most recent trip was to South Korea where I embarked upon a two-week adventure without Audrey. Invited as part of a YouTube vlogging trip, organized by KTO, I spent the first week traveling with other YouTubers in Seoul, Busan and Gyeongju. My second week included independent exploration of Korea with my good friend and fellow YouTuber David of DavidsBeenHere.
Having lived and traveled in South Korea, the chance to return to one of my favorite countries was one of the biggest surprises of 2019. On this particular trip, I had an opportunity to do many things I had not previously covered including a visit to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone between South Korea and North Korea), a Buddhist Temple Stay and a Korean cooking class. It was almost as if the program designed by KTO knew exactly what I had missed out on before.
Obviously, a huge highlight from the two weeks I spent revisiting Korea was the food. I feasted on all of my favorite Korean dishes including Korean barbecue, dolsot bibimbap, haemul pajeon, tteokbokki, bulgogi, kimbap and many others. I can honestly say that Korean food is world-class and is one of my top 5 favorite cuisines in the world. Aside from trying familiar dishes, I had the opportunity to sample raw Korean seafood for the first time.
While visiting Seoul, highlights included going to Gyeongbokgung Palace, Namsan Seoul Tower, Jogyesa Temple and Hongdae. As one of the biggest cities in the world, I barely scratched the surface of things to do in Seoul.
Spending extended time in Busan was my favorite part about the trip with top highlights including a Korean temple stay, fresh fish markets and a Korean baseball game. It was from Busan that we ended up taking a day-trip to Daegu where we enjoyed a traditional Korean market and tried Galbi-Jjim for the first time.

I was blessed to go to Gamcheon Cultural village back in May of 2018 for Children's Day. Gamcheon Cultural village is easy to get to in Busan and it is gorgeous! Busan was recently named 2018 best place to travel to in Asia. Gamcheon Cultural village has also been featured in a few kpop videos, like a BTS video from a while back. Gamcheon Cultural village and Busan are definitely a place I want to go back to again!

It's the first time in Korea for me and as living in Osaka me and Carlota was thinking of taking the flight there as it's very close. The first day there we visited Gamcheon Culture Village and it was truly amazing, I fell in love with the colors!

Gamcheon Culture Village (Korean: 감천문화마을; Hanja: 甘川文化마을) is a town of Gamcheon-dong, Saha District, Busan, South Korea. The area is known for its steep streets, twisting alleys, and brightly painted houses, which have been restored and enhanced in recent years to attract tourism.[1] In order for the village to be reborn as a cultural hub, the Saha District received funding from various government offices for the purpose of urban regeneration. After painting its walls with a fresh coat of paint and placing works of arts throughout the area, the village was given its new name. The renovation efforts reached their peak with the success of the “Empty House Residency Preservation Project.” The village has been reborn as Busan’s most colorful and artistic spot.[2]
The Village was built during the 1920's and 30's, when Busan's city administration decided to relocate its poor Korean population from the hillside into an area that was not visible to the port, but local enough to provide labor. [3] By brightly painting their houses, the residence have turned the village into one of the most featured tourist attractions in Busan. [4] Because it was built on such a steep mountain-side slope, the Village has been nicknamed the Machu Picchu of Busan.[5]

All You Can Eat KOREAN BUFFET + Gamcheon Culture Village | Busan, South Korea
On the morning of my third day in South Korea, my group and I took the KTX bullet train 325 kilometers, or a little over 200 miles, from Seoul in the northwestern part of the country to Busan in the far southeast! Come along with us as we make the cross-country journey!

It takes 2.5 hours to get to Busan, and I was so excited to get there. We started at Seoul Station, the main station in the capital. The KTX bullet train that leaves from there is the fastest route between the two cities and is the most-traveled bullet train route.
The station is huge with lots of platforms, retail spots, and restaurants. You can get lost there! I stopped at the Dunkin Donuts in the station and got a rice cake stick and a green tea latte. Sam and I had six minutes to get to the train. You want to get there!
Our seats were in first class, which was pretty nice and had lots of leg space. The seats were in a 2-1 configuration. There were huge windows and a spot to charge your batteries.
As we rode to Busan, I tried my rice cake stick. It was a yummy, compact donut that was full of sugar! It had a glaze on top. Then I went with the green tea latte, which was basically a matcha. In first class, you get a welcome kit that contains a cookie, some nuts, and a hand wipe.
The ride to Busan was super smooth. You’re just gliding through the country, past mountains and through tunnels. It was a lot like Japan’s bullet trains, as you’re supposed to be very quiet while you’re riding them.
I learned from my friend and fellow traveler Chris that there are free water vending machines in first class. And just like that, we were in Busan after 2.5 hours!
Busan Station was very clean and open, and much smaller than Seoul Station. It looked really chill and spotless! Then we boarded the bus and headed to the restaurant, Vips.
Vips is a buffet, so there were tons of options. I loaded up my plate with tons of Korean dishes!
They give you wet wipes at the restaurant, which I love. I love how sanitary South Korea is. After cleaning my hands, I dug in!
I started with the noodles, which were cold and spicy! The spice wasn’t super intense, but the heat hit me right away! They were almost like glass noodles from Thailand.
Then I moved on to the tteok-bokki, the sticky rice cakes in spicy sauce. They were super dense but weren’t so spicy. Next was the spicy salad with cabbage and spring onions, which was crunchy and super fresh! The pork barbecue was almost like juicy and tender brisket! Then I took the shell and legs off the shrimp. It wasn’t really spicy and had a nice, sweet glaze on it.
Then I tried the fried chicken, which had a sweet and sour honey glaze on it. It was so amazing! The winner for me were the noodles and the pork! Then I had some craft beer from Jeju Island, which was a little light and hoppy, with a crafty taste.
After lunch, we headed to Gamcheon Culture Village, a colorful area that’s very touristy. There’s lots of street food. I saw lots of cute, cotton candy designs and even a Fat Thor and Fat Iron Man!
We got an amazing view of the colorful village and nearby green mountains. It’s so vibrant and so cool! From another viewpoint, I could also see the ocean. This was my favorite spot in South Korea so far! Then we climbed to the top of a café to see the amazing view! We had a coffee green tea latte and enjoyed the incredible vista around us!

My crazy seventh day in South Korea continued with a visit to Gamcheon Cultural Village in the city of Busan. There, my boy Sam and I went on a unique street food tour! Come along with us as we eat some delicious Korean street food and explore the village!

Gamcheon Cultural Village is known for its beautiful, colorful buildings and winding alleys. It’s a popular tourist destination and decorates the side of a hill in the city. But Sam and I were there to have some street food!
We started at a booth selling fish-shaped waffles with red bean paste inside. I’d had something similar in Japan. You get three for 1,000 won/$0.82 USD, so it was a good deal! They’re crunchy on the outside and nice and doughy on the inside. I loved it!
A few feet away, we found shrimp on a stick with a fish cake. The vendor covered it in ketchup and mustard. It cost 3,000 won/$2.46 USD. It was very different. I couldn’t tell what it was. It was spongy and contained some vegetables, but was otherwise mediocre.
As we headed onward to find more street food, we passed through the village. There were lots of murals, stores, and souvenir shops. The temperature was nice and pleasant, and the area was very interesting!
We had quickly visited Gamcheon Cultural Village a few days earlier with our group. There were wall-to-wall tourists then, but there were none this time around. It was nice to get to explore it properly!
We found a stand selling goat melon. The melon was very refreshing and crunchy!
Because it was Sunday, there weren’t many shops open. I wanted something savory, but we kept coming across sweet things like cotton candy and ice cream. But then we came across a stall selling a strange-looking orange gelatin ball. The vendor served it with a mango sauce and crushed peanuts. I also got a frozen beer on the side.
It was weird! It was Jell-O with powdered peanuts and mango sauce. I was in love with it! It was really unique. The frozen beer was like a slushie with honey on top and was weird! The Jell-O ball cost 3,000 won each, while the frozen beer was 4,500/$3.69.
Across from the stand selling the Jell-O balls was a spot with one of the best views of Gamcheon Cultural Village. The vibrant colors were on full display, and I could see the mountains in the background. A few minutes later, we found a lookout point with even better views. We had panoramic views of the entire city and the ocean.
We doubled back to find more good food, though some of the places were closing. I don’t recommend coming to Gamcheon Cultural Village on a Sunday evening. Instead, come in the morning when everything is open.
We headed down the mountain and rode to an area where we had street food a few days earlier. We ended up at Galmegi Brewing Co., a craft beer bar. I got a rye IPA, which was delicious. It was hoppy and had a nice, rye flavor.

Guide to Busan | Jagalchi Market, Busan Gamcheon Culture Village and Pizza | Part 1
A day guide for Busan. These are the places in Busan that I managed to cover in a day. Jalgachi Market, Gukje Market, Busan Gamcheon Culture Village and Busan Tower. This is my guide to Busan grouping the tourist attractions in the same area together in one video. Some places I spent more time than others so you can shift your itinerary according to your interest.
0:26 We started off at Jagalchi Market, you can go to Jalgachi Market using the subway and alight at Jagalchi Subway station. There are a lot of interesting seafood on display in the market. The first floor of the market is the fresh seafood section where you can buy the fresh seafood and bring it to the second floor to cook with additional costs. There are a lot of different stores but their prices are the same. 4000won per pax if you want to cook. You can also buy fish dishes directly from the food store. Personally, I feel that the place is too touristy, giving me an uneasy feeling, like I will get scammed. Therefore, we decided to go somewhere else to eat.
1:21 I stumbled upon the basement of Shindonga market where many local people are eating. They sell mackerel set meal at 6000 won per person. It was worth the price as we ended up with a feast!
2:52 Next, we walked over to Gukje market which is just next to Jalgachi market. However, we were too full to eat thus skipping this destination. You can recognise Gukje market by the Busan Internation Film Festival booths that the stalls are using. They feature korean street food as well as street food from other countries like the peanut ice cream roll from Taiwan.
3:16 We decided to walk to Gamcheon Cultural Village as it is also close by. As the village is at the top of the hill so I recommend you to take the bus 2-2 instead. You can board the bus at the foot of the hill. Enjoy the beautiful village with lots of pictures and relax at one of the many cafes while you are there!
7:26 We went to a shopping street near Nampo and found an entrance to the park where Busan Tower is. We took a few pictures of Busan tower and left as there is nothing much to do there.
7:53 We went to Lee Jae Mo's Pizza for dinner as we were craving for pizza. The pizzas were delicious. Finally something different from the usual Korean cuisines we ate everyday.

FYI, During the Korean War, Busan was one of only two cities in South Korea not captured by the North Korean army within the first three months of the war, the other being Daegu.
Back in 1950s, people built their house on the hills because there were full of people from different cities, so not many places to build the house.
In 2009, the town was restored as the purpose of urban regeneration by Busan city government.
Houses were painted with various pastel colors and walls were vibrantly decorated with murals and sculptures.
The whole village was reborn as Busan’s most colorful and artistic spot.

Exploring Deeper Busan, Korea ( Gamcheon Culture Village )
We arrived in Busan, South Korea very early in the morning. We we’re on a cruise with Diamond Princess Cruises from Tokyo to Busan, South Korea. With only 8 hours to spend in South Korea, we knew that we wanted to visit the Gamcheon Culture Village and Korea’s largest Fish Market.
Gamcheon Culture Village is known for it’s steep street’s, breathtaking views of Busan, Colourful houses and strange winding alleyways that snake their way up the mountain. The village was born in the 1920’s and only recently was it repainted and revitalized and the majority of the poor people we’re relocated. It has also been nicknamed the Machu Picchu of Busan.
One of the top things to do in Busan, South Korea is to get lost in the Gamcheon Culture Village. This is the best way to get a feel for the local life; However we don’t recommend doing this at night. Take notice of the beautiful street art and try the street food!
If you don’t have the energy to hike the hill and you want to go to the top to take photos, you can take a tour bus from the centre of town.

Delicious Korean shaved ice in Gamcheon Cultural Village!! - Busan
Hello you! I finally got to go back to Busan and visit Gamcheon Culture Village. I've been wanting to go there for years as it's famous for the beautiful pastel painted houses on the hillsides. It's such a beautiful place to stroll around and there's many amazing cafes to take a break in from the heat.
