Australian lawn bowlers prepare for 2018 Commonwealth Games
With the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games just over 400 days away, the AIS has been working with our elite bowlers to help fine-tune their skills. Senior Skill Acquisition Specialist Derek Panchuk explains how the AIS was working with Bowls Australia athletes in Canberra last week to better understand the characteristics eye tracking in elite bowlers. Fellow researchers from La Trobe University were also collecting biomechanical data. The eyes tell us how we're taking in the information, and the biomechanics tells us how we're actually using that information.
Rhian Stowers - 2018 Highlight Reel
Selected highlights from the 2018 rugby season for Rhian Stowers (Somerset College 1st XV, Bond University Colts 1 and 2 and Queensland 1 Schoolboys).
Rhian (pronounced Ree-yan) Stowers was born in Wellington, New Zealand on 14th February 2000. His broader heritage is NZ Maori / Samoan / English from his paternal side and New Zealand / Welsh from his maternal side.
Stowers moved to the Gold Coast with his family at the age of 6 and started playing rugby union in his first year in Australia. Stowers is broadly described as a talented rugby union, rugby league and touch football player, having made representative sides in all three codes during the 2014 to 2018 playing seasons.
Stowers has played all of his junior club rugby on Queensland's Gold Coast - Griffith Uni Colleges Knights (Aged 6 to 12), Helensvale Hogs (Aged 12 to 15) and Gold Coast Eagles (Aged 16). Stowers has played representative rugby league for QRL's Cyrill Connell, Mal Meninga and HDC Colts competitions. He has played club league for Ormeau Shearers (Aged 16 and 17). Stowers has also represented Gold Coast, South Queensland, South Coast, Queensland Secondary School and Queensland in touch football.
In club rugby, Stowers currently plays as part of the Bond University Colts program; primarily at scrum-half. He has been earmarked as part of the Bond University and Queensland Reds 7s program as well as the Queensland Reds Elite Development Squad. For Bond in 2018, Stowers scored 10 tries in just 7 appearances – including a 4 try haul in one game.
In previous years when representing Gold Coast in rugby Stowers played flyhalf and left centre positions. Whilst his preferred position is scrum-half, he is also effective at flyhalf, fullback, and wing.
In relation to schoolboy rugby, Stowers was selected for the Queensland I school side for the 2018 Australian Schools Championships after captaining the Combined Secondary Schools side in the Queensland Schools trials at Ballymore.
His 2018 Queensland 1 selection was one of a string of successes including captaining South Coast to a state championship and playing for a victorious Somerset College team in the APS 1stXV Grand Final – where he was also awarded the Sean Hardman MVP Medal.
In 2017, Stowers was selected for Queensland II schools side for the 2017 Australian Schools Championships. Queensland II made the final but were beaten by a talented ACT outfit. However, Stowers is credited with one of the plays of the championship.
(Reference Nic Darveniza w3livenews.com):
Viliami Lea blasted through a hole in midfield before finding flanker Kohan Herbert, in turn flick passing to the feet of scrumhalf Rhian Stowers. Showing off skills that would make Brian O’Driscoll weep, Stowers kicked the ball up to himself mid-stride and passed for lock Will Chaffey to score a truly memorable try.
Standouts for QLD II
Rhian Stowers (9); Lachlan Connors will count himself unlucky but I just couldn’t keep out the outrageous display of skill that Stowers put on for Chaffey’s try. Simply unbelievable; I encourage all to seek out the highlights and watch for yourself.
Stowers' performance at the 2017 Australian Schools Championship resulted in a 2018 private benefactor scholarship at Gold Coast’s Somerset College as well as solid interest from the Bond University Rugby club where he is currently registered.
Stowers' goals are to make selection for Queensland and Australian youth representative rugby and rugby 7s sides, and to set a path for Super Rugby development with the Queensland Reds. At present strong interest has been shown by Queensland Reds Elite Development, Queensland Reds 7s and Australia U20s. Additionally, Stowers was offered a rugby and academic scholarship with Bond University, which will assist in building a solid path of development for the youngster in 2019 - 2020.
Whilst Stowers' heritage hails from New Zealand, his goal is to ultimately play for Australia in a successful World Cup campaign.
