Built in 1956, the Gandhi Mandapam in Kanyakumari, India sits on the site where the famed pacifist’s ashes were kept before they were scattered to the sea and features unique architectural details to honor the beloved leader’s life.

The Gandhi Memorial, Kanyakumari is a temple built in 1956, to commemorate Mohanlal Karamchand Gandhi, better known as Gandhi. Gandhiji, the ambassador of Indian struggle for independence is considered the father of the nation. After his death, shortly after the independence his body was cremated and the ashes disposed off in the sea adjoining Kanyakumari. The ashes, before being disposed off, were kept at the spot where the present Gandhi Memorial stands. The temple lies in the close proximity of the Amman temple.
The Gandhi Memorial, Kanyakumari is built in the semblance of typical temples pf Orissa, yet it has a hint of modernism in its design. It has been built in such a way that the rays of sun at 12 noon lights up the place where the ashes of the Gandhi were kept before disposing off. An urn has been placed in for the general public to pay homage to the sole of Gandhi. The serene setting intertwined with the memories of Gandhi counts for the peaceful and inspiring ambiance of the temple premises. The temple also houses the last belongings of Gandhi, the accessories that were with him in his last hours.
Visitors to the Gandhi Memorial, Kanyakumari are welcome to pay homage to Bapu on all days of the year. The temple premises remain open for public viewing for twelve hours from seven in the morning till seven in the evening. No entrance fee is charged by the temple authorities. Conveyance to the Gandhi Memorial is available in abundance. Cabs, buses or private cars, all of them are comfortable and reasonable in charge.

This is a Memorial to Mahatma Gandhi who had visited Kanyakumari in 1925 and 1937. It is constructedat a place on the seashore, near to Kumari Amman Temple, where his ashes were kept for public darshan before immersion in the sea on February 12, 1948. The Mandapam is built in Orissa style of architecture and designed in such a way that on his birthday, 2 October, the rays of the sun, through a hole on the roof, falls exactly on the place where the urn was kept.

The memorial was transferred to the administrative control of the Public (Information and Public Relations) Department from Public Works Department of Government of Tamil Nadu in the year 1978.

Located near the shores of Kanyakumari, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial was built in the honour of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation. Also known as Gandhi Mandapam, it is an important part for every Kanyakumari tour, presenting a glimpse into the historical richness of India and into life of the great man that India had seen.
Mahatma Gandhi has visited Kanyakumari twice, in the year of 1925 and then in 1937. After his demise in 1948, his ashes were kept in 12 different urns so as to transfer them to different parts of the country. One of these urns was brought to Kanyakumari. Before immersions, it was kept at the spot where the memorial is built now for public so that they can pay their last homage to one of the greatest sons of India. Later the ashes were immersed in the sea waters at Kanyakumari. Later Mahatma Gandhi Memorial or Gandhi Mandapam was built at the same place.
The construction of Gandhi Memorial was completed in the year of 1956. An excellent example of modern architecture, it draws inspirations from Orissa style of architecture. The central spire of this mandapam with pink portico has a height of 79 feet which is symbolic of the age of Mahatma Gandhi at the time of his demise. The most striking feature of Gandhi Mandapam is the ceiling of the building. It has an opening that has been built in such a way that on every 2nd October which is the broth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, rays of Sun falls exactly on the spot where his ashes were kept.
Another prominent feature of Gandhi Memorial is the view of the surrounding areas from the top of the memorial that is breathtaking. So take your time while visiting Gandhi Memorial and spend some time watching the captivating view.
There is also a library showcasing books, magazines, pamphlets and other kinds of literature from the pre independence times. This library can be visited on Friday and Saturday of every week. One can also see various photographs of Mahatma Gandhi and other great personalities who have contributed greatly for India and the world.
In the year of 1978, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial came under the administrative control of the Public Department of Tamil Nadu Government.As it is located near Kanyakumari Devi Temple, one can visit both the places together.
Timings and Entry Fee of Gandhi Memorial, Kanyakumari
The opening timings of Gandhi Memorial are from 7 AM to 7 PM.
There is no entry fee for Mahatma Gandhi Memorial. However, you are required to pay a minimal amount of Re.1 for keeping the footwear outside the memorial as footwear are not allowed inside the memorial.

It is located at Triveni Sangam, the meeting place of three oceans, viz., Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean and Arabian sea. It is a two storied temple like structure. You have to remove shoes in the front before entering into this building. You can climb up to the upper floor through the steps and see beautiful views of the surroundings.
