The great-grandson of Mohandas K. Gandhi said on Tuesday that he had failed to collect enough funds
HEADLINE: Gandhi great-grandson: Can't buy auction items
CAPTION: The great-grandson of Mohandas K. Gandhi said on Tuesday that he had failed to collect enough funds to buy a rare collection of the Indian independence leader's personal items that are up for auction and bring them back to India. (March 3)
[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]
NB. THIS IS A VOICEOVER TRANSCRIPT, NOT A FULL SHOT LIST.
[Notes:NATS up we have fallen very short of it.]
It was a last-ditch effort by the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi..
He tried to raise 300-thousand dollars to buy a rare collection of his great-grandfather's personal items up for auction.
The items include Gandhi's distinctive wire-rim glasses.
[Notes:SOT Tushar Gandhi, Great-grandson of Mohandas K. Gandhi: I haven't succeeded, as I said, it was too late to go to the people and hope that common Indian people would be able to donate for such a large amount of money as required and so we have fallen very short of it. And as I said in the beginning, we don't have even enough money to qualify to enter the bidding process.]
Gandhi lived a life of poverty and had very few possessions...
And his great-grandson thinks those belongings should be brought back to India ... and the people of India.
[Notes:Tushar Gandhi, Great-grandson of Mohandas K. Gandhi: Stopping the auction is one thing, but ensuring that what belongs to India comes back to India, is a totally different ball game, and I hope the government of India understands this difference and behaves in a manner where it will be guaranteed that those things will come back to India. What belongs to India, what belongs to the father of the nation comes back to India.]
Los Angeles documentary producer James Otis is selling the items.
He also wants to see the pieces wind up back in India
[Notes:SOT James Otis, Collector who is selling Gandhi items: We have gone to the Indian government and made an offer to them: if they were to increase their help of the poorest of Indians, increase their GDP from one percent to five percent, I would gladly donate these items to them, and they would be happy and a cause that Gandhi believed in greatly, the poorest of those in India, would be benefited.]
Gandhi advocated nonviolent civil disobedience to resist British rule in India..
He died in 1948 after being shot by a Hindu radical.
