Discover Hinduism in Mauritius. One of the phenomenal tropic and volcanic jam of Mauritius, Ganga Talao is a symbol for diversity and cultural richness with calm breath of fresh air in the deep south of Mauritius. With the sacred holy lake, it is a must visit and memorable experience.
Having visited the island 3 times already, going to Ganga Talao is a blessing and I find it to be the most peaceful place in the whole Mauritius with unbelieving surroundings, 33 metres statues at the entrance and other colourful statues around the lake.
Every year during the festival of Maha Shivratree, which celebrates the God Shiva, one of the three major deities in Hinduism. Pligrims walk to the sacred lake for days from around the island during the festival while locals provide them with necessities and encouragement along the way.
It is a beautifully blissful site in Mauritius.

Grand Bassin Mauritius
Ganga Talao (commonly known as Grand Bassin) is a crater lake situated in a secluded mountain area in the district of Savanne, deep in the heart of Mauritius. It is about 1800 feet above sea level. The first group of pilgrims who went to Ganga Talao were from the village of Triolet and it was led by Pandit Giri Gossayne from Terre Rouge in 1898.
It is considered the most sacred Hindu place in Mauritius
The Sagar Shiv Mandir is located on the bank of the lake and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are temples dedicated to other Gods including Lord Hanuman, Goddess Ganga, and Lord Ganesh along the Grand Bassin. During Shivaratri, many pilgrims in Mauritius walk bare feet from their homes to the lake.
There are also 2 big statues of Mangal Mahadev and Maa Durgaa both of 108 feet and the statue of Maa Durgaa is said to be the biggest one in the world.

Maha Shivaratree : l’affluence à Grand-Bassin vue du ciel
Depuis vendredi, les pèlerins hindous se dirigent vers le lac sacré de Grand-Bassin. Ils préparent ainsi la grande nuit de Shiva en, notamment, offrant des fruits, des fleurs et du lait. Et ils étaient nombreux à s’être rendus à Grand-Bassin, ce week-end. Les aires de stationnement affichaient déjà 100 % de remplissage dans l’après-midi, selon la Traffic Branch. Voici quelques vues aériennes du site du Ganga Talao, le dimanche 15 février, en marge de la fête de Maha Shivaratree, qui sera célébrée le mardi 17 février.

Mauritius-Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao), the holy lake of the Hindus
The crater lake Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao - Lake of the Ganges) is the largest pilgrimage cities outside of India.
The water is considered holy. Many believers fill it into bottles and take it home. It is also used for ablutions. In February to March, the Maha-Shivaratri festival is held here. Then make a pilgrimage up to 400,000 faithful from throughout the world to the lake.
You can find the Mother Ganga, see the monkey god Hanuman, the elephant god Ganesha and much more.
The legend says that the holy lake Grand Bassin is connected to the holy river Ganges in India.
You can also see Shiva, the statue is 33 meters ( 108 ft) high. It was just restored.
Tourists are allowed. Filming and photography also. But please have respect and go barefoot.

Das Wasser gilt als heilig. Viele Gläubige füllen es in Flaschen ab und nehmen es mit nach Hause. Es wird auch
zu Waschungen benutzt.
Im Februar bis März findet hier das Maha-Shivaratri-Fest statt. Dann pilgern bis zu 400.000 Gläubige aus
der ganzen Welt an den See.
Ihr könnt die Mutter Ganga, den Affengott Hanuman, den Elefantengott Ganesha und vieles mehr sehen.
Die Legende sagt, dass der heilige See Grand Bassin mit dem heiligen Fluss Ganges in Indien verbunden ist.
Ihr könnt auch Shiva sehen, die Statur ist 33 Meter hoch. Sie wurde gerade restauriert.

Wandern auf Mauritius Grand Bassin / Ganga Talao
Die Wanderung am Vulkansee Grand Bassin und dem Zentrum Ganga Talao der Hindus startete am Parkplatz neben der eindrucksvollen 33 m hohen Statue von Shiva, die kupfer-farbig glänzend und schon sehr frühzeitig zu sehen ist. Von dort ging es am Shiv Mandir Tempel zur Uferpromenade des Vulkansee und an den in leuchtenden Farben schillernden Göttern und Göttinnen der Hindu-Religion vorbei und hinauf auf den Hügel mit dem Hanaman Schrein um einen Überblick über das gesamte Gelände um das Grand Bassin zu bekommen. Danach erfolgte der Besuch des spirituellen Hindu-Zentrums, wo man 26 Avatar-3D-Bilder von Göttern und Göttinnen bewundern kann und dann ging es am Kashi Vishwanath Mandir Tempel, nahe des Shiva Monuments, vorbei zum Startpunkt. Neben der glänzenden Statue entsteht gerade das etwa gleichgroße Monument der Götting Durga mit dem Tiger. Insgesamt eine eindrucksvolle Wanderung um mit der Hindus Religion & Kultur in Kontakt zu kommen.
