Watch: The magnificent Gangbal lake like never seen before!
The Gangbal lake is situated at the foothills of Haramukh Mountain in Ganderbal district of Kashmir valley and covers a total area of 167 hectares. Apart from being a very popular trekking spot, its a famous pilgrim site as well.
Adjacent to Gangbal is another famous lake, the 'Nundkol lake'. Both lakes derive their source from glaciers of Harmukh which is the second highest peak of Kashmir valley and is visible from most of the places in the valley. The altitude of the peak is 5150 metres. Harmukh peak has been climbed many times and only last year it was been climbed by Jammu and Kashmir Mountaineering and Hiking Cub (JKMHC).
Gangbal is one of the important halting stations on the seven lake trek also known as the 'Great Lakes trek'. This trek, which is 65 kms long, is considered as the one the best in the entire Himalayas. The seven lakes trek involves crossing of 3 passes, each over 4000 metres high.
The trek to Gangbal starts from Naranag where the ancient temple dedicated to Lord Buteshwara is located. This ASI monument is being frequented by tourists, pilgrims and archaeologists.
Gangbal lake was stocked by Britishers with trout fish. Since then the brown trout, and rainbow trout thrives along with the native snow trout. The stream draining the Naranag valley joins river Sindh near Kangan. This stream is known as 'Kanaknaz Naala'.
How to Reach?
The Gangabal lake is approached from Srinagar 45 kilometres by road via Ganderbal up to Naranag and then a trek of 12.5 kilometres upslopes leads to the lake, which can be covered by a horse ride or by foot. The shepherds and gujjars can be seen during the trek with their flocks of sheep and goats. Another trek (25 kilometres long) leads to the lake site from Sonamarg via the Vishansar Lake crossing the Nichnai pass ( 4100 meteres). It can also be accessed through a trek from Bandipore via Arin.
Best time to visit - June to October.

Sonmarg, which means 'meadow of gold' has, as its backdrop, snowy mountains against a cerulean sky. The Sindh meanders along here and abounds with trout and mahseer, snow trout can be caught in the main river. In late April when Sonmarg is open for road transport, the visitors can have access to snow which is furnished all over like a white carpet. Private vehicles are not allowed. Visitors have to hire taxi and it is controlled by taxi mafia. Ponies can be hired for the trip up to Thajiwas glacier a major attraction during the summer months.
The climate of Sonmarg is very bracing; but the rainfall is frequent though not heavy, except for two or three days at a time in July and August with fine spell in between. From Sonmarg, trekking routes lead to the Himalayan lakes of Vishansar Lake, Krishansar Lake, Gangabal Lake and Gadsar Lake, stocked with Snowtrout and Brown trout and Satsar, glacier-fed and surrounded by banks of alpine flowers.
A close by excursion is to Baltal, 15 km east of Sonmarg. This little valley lies at the foot of the Zojila, only a day's journey away from the sacred cave of Amarnath is a base camp for Amarnath yatra. Trekkers can also reach the starkly splendid roof-top of the world Leh, by crossing over the Zoji La pass.
At Sonmarg the Jammu and Kashmir tourism department is organising river rafting tournaments yearly, which has recently seen the participation of teams abroad. A large number of Hindi movies have been filmed in Sonmarg.

The Gangbal is a lake situated at the foothills of Mount Haramukh (the second highest mountain peak in the vicinity of Kashmir valley in Ganderbal district, north of Srinagar city in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is an alpine high altitude oligotrophic lake, home to many species of fish, including the brown trout.
The lake has a maximum length of two and a half kilometers and maximum width of one kilometre. It is fed by precipitation, glaciers and springs.

Memories of Beautiful Sonamarg (MAY 2014)
Sonmarg (Meadow of Gold) is a hill station near Srinagar, in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The drive to Sonmarg is mesmerizing along the Nallah Sindh, the largest tributary of the Jehlum River.
Sonmarg is open for road transport in late April. Private vehicles are not allowed. Visitors have to hire taxi and it is controlled by taxi mafia. Ponies can be hired for the trip up to Thajiwas glacier a major attraction during the summer months. Thajiwas glacier at an altitude of 9,186 feet is a striking silvery scene set against the emerald meadows and a clear blue sky.
Sonmarg, trekking routes lead to the Himalayan lakes of Vishansar Lake, Krishansar Lake, Gangabal Lake and Gadsar Lake, stocked with trout fish.
Driving from Sonamarg to Srinagar - Part 1
The distance between Sonamarg to Srinagar, Kashmir is 80Kms approximately. It takes two hours to reach Srinagar from Sonamarg in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.

On the two great hills that overlook the city and the lake – Hari Parbat (Kohi-e-Maran) and Shankracharaya (Takht-e-Sulaiman) are reminders of the city’s eclectic past: graced with ancient temples and medieval mosques, imposing fortress walls and simple, quiet shrines. The sacred is equally pervasive in the old city, lined along both sides of the Jhelum river. Here are the wooden Islamic shrines with pagoda-like roofs that are so distinctive of Kashmir, and here too are the spires of old temples built amidst winding lanes of wooden houses with their delicately carved balconies, centuries’ old bridges and bustling markets.
The markets of Srinagar offer a vast variety of the most refined crafts – from pashmina shawls, as light and soft as the breeze that blows across the Dal, to intricately handwoven carpets, delicately carved woodwork and glittering copperware. Epicureans will delight in the rich Kashmir cuisine: from melt-in-the-mouth gushtabas to irresistible walnut tarts, or even a handful of warm, roasted chestnuts cracked open in the sun. For those who wish to squeeze a little more of Kashmir into their stay, Srinagar is within comfortable driving distance of several popular sites.

Sonmarg or Sonamarg is a town of Jammu and Kashmir state of India. Situated at 87 km from Srinagar, it is a popular tourist destination.[1]
Sonamarg, at an altitude of 3,000 metres above sea level, 87 km north-east of Srinagar. The drive to Sonamargh is though yet another spectacular facet of country side in Kashmir, this time in Sindh Valley. The Sindh Valley is the largest tributary of the valley of Kashmir. It is upwards of sixty miles long, and valley and deep rock-girt gorge to open grassy meadow land and village-dotted slopes.
Sonamarg, which means ' meadow of gold ' has, as its backdrop, snowy mountains against a cerulean sky. the Sindh meanders along here and abounds with trout and mahseer, snow trout can be caught in the main river.Ponies can be hired for the trip up to Thajiwas glacier a major attraction during the summer months. However, there is need for some stricter regulation to save the environment of the area from over tourism. Litters such as plastic bottles, etc., are strewn all over along the track.[2]

From Sonamarg, trekking routes lead to the Himalayan lakes of Vishansar (4084 msl), Krishnasar (3810 msl) and Gangabal Lake (3658 msl). Other lakes in the region are Gadsar Lake, stocked with snowtrout and Satsar, glacier-fed and surrounded by banks of alpine flowers.

Driving from Zoji La Pass to Sonamarg - Part 2
The distance between Zojila Pass to Sonamarg is 24Kms approximately. It takes nearly an hour to reach Sonamarg from Zojila Pass as this place lies at a height of around 11,649 ft from the sea level.
Located on the Indian National Highway 1 between Srinagar and Leh, is Zoji La pass, in the western section of the Himalayan mountain ranges.
Around 3528 m (11, 649 ft) above the sea level, the pass is 9 kms from Sonamarg and is an important link between Ladakh and Kashmir. This pass is considered to be the second highest pass after Fotu La on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. At the peak of the winter season, most of the times, it becomes inaccessible but the Border Roads Organization (BRO) works to extend traffic in most of the time of the year. The Beacon Force is that unit of the BRO, which takes care of clearing and maintaining the road during winter season.
At the time of the Indo-Pakistani War in 1947, this pass was seized by the Pakistani raiders in 1948 while they were in the wake of capturing Ladakh. Later on 1st November, Zojila pass was captured by Indian forces under Operation Bison.
Once you reach the pass, you are going to have an amazing view of the mighty Himalayan mountains, which makes the ride worth. This pass witnesses the heaviest snowfall during the winters and thus, remains closed to traffic for around six months in a year. This 434 kms long highway stretch is the lifeline of Ladakh. After Kargil war in 1999, the government paced-up the construction of the road due to its strategic importance.
