Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple, a Historic place in Tamil Nadu, India
Gangaikonda Cholapuram is located at Thanjavur (Tanjore) in Tamil Nadu.
In the early 11th century, the temple got built by Rajendra Chola son of Rajaraja Chola, after his victorious march to river Ganga on Northern India.
Gangaikonda Cholapuram is regarded as the reproduction of Brihadisvara Temple that was built by Rajaraja Chola.
The superb architecture of the temple boasts of a 9 storey vimanam that extends to the height of 185 feet. Facing the east direction, Gangai Konda Cholapuram embraces incredible sculptures and carvings.
The temple was surrounded by a huge fort-like wall, the outer wall largely destroyed during the English rule (1896) to reuse the building material (granite rocks) for constructing the Lower Anicut the dam built across river Kollidam.
The Vimana with its recessed corners and upward movement presents a striking contrast to the straight-sided pyramidal tower of Tanjavur. As it rises to a height of 160 feet, shorter than the Tanjavur tower, and often described as the feminine counterpart of the Tanjavur temple. The Vimana is flanked on either side by small temples.
The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is a four meter high lingam. The sanctum is surrounded by two walls, the inner and outer, providing worship area for the royal family.
The Shiva Linga in the temple is the biggest in size among the Lingas in Tamilnadu temples. This is made of a single lime stone 200 metres far from the sanctum sanctorum and placed on ground.
Sun light falls on the Nandhi each day reflecting on the Linga. Even if all lights in the sanctum are put off, devotees can see the Lord in the sunlight. One small Nandhi also infront of the big Nandhi.
The sculptures erected here are as artistic as found in any other temples of Cholas. The most interesting are Nataraja (Shiva in the form of a Cosmic dancer) ,Ardhanareshwar (the man-woman manifestation of Lord Shiva) and Coronation of King Rajendra Chozhan by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
In the north-east a well called lion-well (simhakeni) with the lion figure guarding its steps.According to tradition Rajendra I poured a part of the Ganges water brought from his famous expedition into the well to sanctify it.

All About Gangaikondacholapuram Temple
Gangaikondacholapuram Temple is situated near the Thanjavur city of Tamil Nadu. The temple was founded in the year 1020 and it took approximately nine years to fully complete the construction work. Gangaikondacholapuram Temple of Tanjore is dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the Hindu Trinity of Gods. The person who can be credited with the erection of this temple is King Rajendra Chozhan, son of Raja Raja Chozhan. Rajendra built this temple to recreate his father's achievement, the Brihadeeswarar Temple of Thanjavur.
The time when the Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple of India was built represents the golden period of the Cholas. During those years, the Cholas were engaged in the invasion of northern territories and wealth was flowing in from all directions. The vimanas of the temples have been adorned with exquisite carvings and reflect a heavy influence of the Northern styles. One can see magnificent carvings on the hard southern granite stones of the temple. The sculptures of the temple are quite characteristic of the temples constructed by the Cholas.
This elaboration and ornamentation, a result of contact with the Northern Chalukya kingdoms, reflects a departure from the earlier Chola and Pallava style of subtleness and simplicity. Numerous sculptures embellish the interiors of the Gangaikondacholapuram Temple of Tamil Nadu. The most impressive as well as most splendid sculptures are those of The Nataraja (Shiva in the form of a Cosmic dancer) and Coronation of King Rajendra Chozhan by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Not to be missed are the sculptures of the Dancing Lord Ganesha and the Ardhanarishwar (the man-woman manifestation of Lord Shiva). The Ardhanarishwar form of Lord Shiva represents both duality of divine energy, with its one half having masculine characters and the other being that of an ornamental female. Inside the sanctum sanctorum is a four meter high Shiva Lingam. Surrounding the sanctum are two walls, which were meant to provide a private worship area to the royal family.
The entrance of the sanctum sanctorum is adorned with a beautifully crafted image of Goddess Saraswati. This image reflects an influence of Chalukyas in the architecture of the temple. One also comes across the 'Suryapita' icon that signifies sun worship as well as the 'Navagrahas' (nine planets), another influence of the Chalukyan connection. The Cholas were quite known for being scrupulous record keepers. The inscribed texts in copper plates and temple walls serve as a proof of this quality.
The inscriptions on the walls tell stories of many conquests of the warrior king, land donated during the period, coronation of kings etc. Gangaikondacholapuram Temple has witnessed numerous wars in the past. It used to serve as a garrison and fortified cantonment of, first, the Pandyas and, later, of the British. The temple has also been the target of several lootings and pillages. However, all this could never rob Gangaikondacholapuram Temple of its architectural beauty and sculptural treasures.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple | Indian Temples | Tamil Temples
Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva in Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Ariyalur district, in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Completed in 1035 AD by Rajendra Chola I as a part of his new capital, this Chola dynasty era temple is similar in design, and has a similar name, as the older 11th century, Brihadeeswarar Temple about 70 kilometres (43 mi) to the southwest in Thanjavur. The Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple is smaller yet more refined than the Thanjavur Temple. Both are among the largest temples in South India and examples of Dravidian style temples. The temple is also referred to in texts as Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple or Gangaikondacholeeswaram Temple.
The main temple dedicated to Shiva is based on a square plan, but it reverentially displays other Hindu deities such as Vishnu, Durga, Surya, Harihara, Ardhanarishvara, and others. It opens to the sunrise and its sanctum, as well as the mandapas, are aligned on an east-west axis. In addition to the main shrine, the temple complex has a number of smaller shrines, gopura, and other monuments, with some partially ruined or restored in later centuries. The temple is famed for its bronze sculptures, artwork on its walls, the depiction of Nandi and the scale of its tower. As well as its notability for having been built by Rajendra I, the temple is also noteworthy for its numerous inscriptions, although none of them are his.
Except for this temple, the old city of Gangaikonda Cholapuram – the capital of a powerful Asian empire for over two centuries along with its other major Chola-era Hindu temples have been completely destroyed, leaving a desolate place. The Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple remains an active temple. Four daily rituals, and many yearly festivals are held there, of which the Shivarathri during the Tamil month of Masi (February–March), Aipassi Pournami during Aipassi (October– November) and Thiruvadirai during Margazhi (December–January) are the most prominent. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) administers the temple as a protected heritage monument. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 2004, along with the Brihadeeswarar Temple at Thanjavur and Airavatesvara temple at Darasuram. These are referred to collectively as the Great Living Chola Temples.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple is an architectural work of genius. Located at Thanjavur (Tanjore) in Tamil Nadu, Gangaikondacholapuram can be reached easily through regular buses that are available from the main towns and cities of Tamil Nadu. In the early 11th century, the temple got built by Rajendra Chola, who was the son and successor of Rajaraja Chola.
The voluptuous temple stands next to the famous Brihadisvara temple at Tanjore. Gangaikonda Cholapuram is regarded as the reproduction of Brihadisvara Temple that was built by Rajaraja Chola, father of Rajendra Chola. Gangai Konda Cholapuram was erected to outshine the temple made by the father. The temple is renowned for having the biggest Shivalingam in the Southern part of India.
The sanctum sanctorum embraces the four meter high lingam (phallic form) of Lord Shiva. To provide a private worship area for the royal family, the sanctum is encircled with two walls. The stately entrance of the sanctum is adorned by the beautiful image of Goddess Saraswati. The influence of Chalukyas is also reflected from the icons of 'Suryapita' (Sun worship) and 'Navagrahs' (Nine planets).
The meticulous accounts of the Cholas are inscribed on the copper plates and temple walls. Preferred place of crowned heads, the exotic structure took approximately nine years to complete. Gangaikondacholapuram has been plundered for several times, but the architectural and sculptural wealth remained alive. The temple was erected to extol the accomplishments of a combatant king. Gangaikondacholapuram is a tribute to the architects and artisans, who created this spectacular testament.
Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple| Cholan Temple | Brihadeeswarar Temple | ARK Diaries #6
Gangaikonda Cholapuram is a town situated in Jayankondam, Ariyalur, Tamil Nadu, India. It turned into the capital of the Chola administration in c. 1025 during the rule of Rajendra Chola I, and filled in as the Chola capital for around 250 years.
The town is about around 125 kilometers (78 mi) upper east of Tiruchirapalli international air terminal. Starting at 2014, the old city exists as a legacy town in the Ariyalur area of Tamil Nadu, India. The extraordinary sanctuary of Brihadeeswarar Temple at this spot is next just to the Brihadisvara sanctuary at Thanjavur in its fantastic nature and outperforms it in sculptural quality.
The city was founded by Rajendra Chola I to commemorate his victory over the Pala Dynasty. The name means The town of the chola who took over Ganga (water from Ganga) or who defeated (the kings near) Ganga. It is now a small village, its past eminence only remembered by the existence of the great Lord Maha Shiva Temple. The Chola empire included the whole of southern India to the river Thungabadhra in the north. For administrative and strategic purposes they built another capital and named it Gangaikondacholapuram.
The city seems to have had two fortifications, one inner and the other outer. The outer was probably wider. The remains of the outer fortification can be seen as a mound running all around the palace.
