Gangaramaya (Vihara) Buddhist Temple in Colombo, Sri Lanka
Gangaramaya Temple is one of the most important temples in Colombo, Sri Lanka, being a mix of modern architecture and cultural essence.
The Gangaramaya Vihara Temple is an unusual mix of a Buddhist temple and a museum, home to not only a number of vintage cars but an enormous amount of materials of dubious religious relevance, including gold, sapphires, sandalwood, elephant ivory, porcelain, Chinese statues, two taxidermied elephants, stereos, shells, swords and other assorted knick-knacks.
There is also a lot of specifically religious material, including a massive sacred tree in the centre of the complex. Nearby is the temple’s most sacred relic, said to be a lock of the Buddha’s hair donated from a temple in Bengal.
The main religious event held here is the Nevam Perahara procession held on the poya day (full moon) every February. Hundreds of monks take part in the procession in which sacred relics are carried in a casket on the back of a highly decorated elephant.
Unfortunately, when not being used in ceremonies, the elephant is shackled to a tree between a main road and bus depot for visitors to gawk at while men with canes loom ominously next to the poor creature.
The beautiful Gangarama Temple is famous for its imposing buildings, and is complete with a chetiya, bo tree, image house, Simamalaka, relic chamber containing the relics of the Buddha and Arahat Seevali, museum, library, pirivena, and residential, education and alms halls. It is decorated with stone carvings, brass work and many other forms of Buddhist art. It contains row upon row of Buddha statues in the meditating pose, alongside miniature stupas arranged like a staircase.
As one enters the temple, one will see a huge mural on the wall depicting the ‘Atalo Dahama’ (the eight vicissitudes of life) – gain and loss, good repute and ill repute, praise and censure, and pain and pleasure – to give the message that one shouldn’t be disturbed by these.
The Gangaramaya Temple is one of the bigger Buddhist temples in Colombo. Once you enter the temple buildings you completely forget that you are in a busy city. In the evening, sitting under the Bodhi tree where monks chant and pray, tranquility descends around you. It is definitely not a site to be missed on your visit to Colombo.
Situated near Beira Lake, in the heart of Colombo, the temple was established in 1885 by Venerable Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera. It gradually grew into the complex it is today, which includes the Vihara (monastery), Cetiya (pagoda), Vihara Mandiraya (Image House, which is full of colorful Buddha statues), Seema Malaka, the Bodhi Tree, the Relic Chamber, as well as a library and a museum. At the far end of the courtyard are rows of elevating steps on which Buddha statues of the Thai style have been sequentially placed to greet the skyline.
Women should ensure they are appropriately dressed with legs and shoulders covered. Shawls are provided to cover exposed shoulders or legs if needed. Photography is forbidden inside the temple itself.

Oldest Buddhist temple in Colombo | Travel Video | Zerography
Dipaduttarama Purana Raja Maha Viharaya in Kotahena was founded in 1806 and is the oldest Buddhist temple in Colombo with a history of over 300 years.
Ven.Gunananda Thera is said to have been one of the pioneers who created the Buddhist flag and at this temple in Kotahena the Buddhist flag was officially hoisted for the first time in Sri Lanka at the auspicious time of 8:30a.m. on 28th April 1885. It was also at this temple Vesak Poya day was declared a Holiday.
The first “Daham pasala” or Dhamma school (school to teach the Buddha Dhamma ) in the island commenced at this temple by Mrs. Marie Musaeus Higgins and Madame Helena Patrovna Vlavatsky during the incumbency of the Ven. Migettuwatte Gunananda.
Subsequently the temple began to be referred to as the Thai Temple in Sri Lanka as a member of the Thai Royal family who had been ordained by the Most Venerable Waskaduwe Subhuthi Mahanayake Thera lived at this temple from 1904 - 1911. Thai kings visited this temple on several occasions. The foundation stone for the dagaba was laid in March 1908 and shows two architectural styles: its lower half influenced by Mulagandhakuti Vihara at Buddhagaya and the upper half influenced by the Siamese architecture. Its golden pinnacle was gifted by a king of Thailand. This is the only Thai temple in our country.
The Paramananda Purana Viharaya in Kotahena is the second temple to be built in Colombo, founded around 1852 -1853. It contains murals depicting the life of the Buddha and the history of Buddhism in Ceylon.

What was once a swamp adjoining the famous Beira Lake, a landmark in the capital city, is today a vibrant complex comprising the Gangaramaya temple, the ‘seema Malaka’ – an assembly hall for monks – in the picturesque Beira Lake and a vocational training institute. The temple has been in existence for over 120 years having being established by one of the most famous scholar monks, Venerable Hikkaduwe Sri Sumanagala Nayaka Thera, founder of the Vidyodaya Pirivena, formerly an institute of oriental learning for monks, now a State University – Sri Jayewardenapura University.
He appointed his chief pupil, Devendra Sri Jinaratana Nayake Thera to administer the temple. He laid the foundation to convert the small temple to what it is today – an institution of international reckoning. He made Buddhist texts available to the masses, collected Buddhist artifacts, in addition to the usual facilities for devotees to worship.
When Devundera Vacissara Nayaka Thera succeeded him, further expansion of the temple’s activities was undertaken including the establishment of the Sri Jinaratana Vocational Centre in memory of his teacher monk.
2. Gal Vihara Rock Temple (Ancient Buddhist Sites in Sri Lanka)
In the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, there is a large reclining Buddha statue carved into a single large granite rock face that dates back to the 12th century. It is a very calm and serene location to pay homage to the Buddha and his teachings when visiting Sri Lanka.

Narrator Text:
I am now in the second largest ancient city of Sri Lanka called Polonnaruwa. Behind me is the renowned reclining Buddha statue in the Gal Vihara Rock Temple. The Buddha statue was carved from one intact piece of rock from a mountain. It is very serene, allowing visitors to feel the final instructions of the Buddha before his Parinibbana. Strive on ceaselessly. Let the precepts be your teacher. Let the Satipatthana be your anchor. I can see that many people are paying respects and prostrating in front of the Buddha statue. Of course, besides paying respect, we need to remember the depth of what the Buddha has taught us.
