India Wants To Use Flesh Eating Turtles To Rid The Ganges Of Decomposing Bodies (HBO)
India’s Ganges river is the main source of water for half a billion people. It’s also holy to the country’s almost 1 billion Hindus, who bathe in the river to be cleansed of their sins and believe that if a body is cremated and released into the water at Varanasi it can escape the cycle of reincarnation.
But the river’s cleansing abilities are limited by the fact that the Ganges is one of the world’s most polluted waterways: A billion gallons of raw sewage and industrial waste currently pour into it every day.
The Indian government’s most recent initiative to tackle the pollution problem, Namami Gange, was announced in 2014 and promised $3 billion in funding. So far, it has yielded very few results, and a 2017 investigation concluded that just $205 million had been spent.
Still, the government has launched some pretty outlandish plans, including breeding thousands of flesh-eating turtles to deal with the 200 tons of half-cremated, decomposing bodies that enter the river at Varanasi every year, and commissioning an official pop anthem for the river to rouse patriotic sentiment.
With a growing scandal on its hands, Narendra Modi’s government is scrambling to finish planned Ganges projects before the 2019 general elections. But environmental scientist and campaigner Rakesh Jaiswal said he hasn’t seen any change so far. “The situation is worsening, and in the last 24 years I have seen no improvement at all,” he told VICE News.

At sunrise taking a boat tour along the river is a great way to see the ghats... In the evening, Varanasi holds a big puja ceremony- the Ganga aarti.
Unfortunately, I didn't get too much live footage of the ghat rituatls (I was photographing them instead) so there are photos at the first part of this video and then video footage of the puja comes on later.

Ganga Aarti Varanasi (Benaras, Kashi), India - The video shows the Hindu religious ritual of worship for the holy river Ganges. The ceremony happens everyday from 6.30 -7.30 pm at Dashashwamedh Ghat on the Ganges river banks. A must watch event while in Varanasi, and is enjoyed by locals and tourists from all over the world.
Dashashwamedh Ghat (दशाश्वमेध घाट) is the main ghat in Varanasi on the Ganges River. It is located close to Vishwanath Temple and is probably the most spectacular ghat. Two Hindu mythologies are associated with it: According to one, Lord Brahma created it to welcome Lord Shiva. According to another legend, Lord Brahma sacrificed ten horses during Dasa -Ashwamedha yajna performed here.
Aarti is said to have descended from the Vedic concept of fire rituals, or homa. In the traditional Aarti ceremony, the flower represents the earth (solidity), the water and accompanying handkerchief correspond with the water element (liquidity), the lamp or candle represents the fire component (heat), the peacock fan conveys the precious quality of air (movement), and the yak-tail fan represents the subtle form of ether (space). The incense represents a purified state of mind, and one's intelligence is offered through the adherence to rules of timing and order of offerings. Thus, one's entire existence and all facets of material creation are symbolically offered to the Lord via the Aarti ceremony.The word may also refer to the traditional Hindu devotional song that is sung during the ritual.
Varanasi is a city on the banks of the Ganges (Ganga) in Uttar Pradesh, 320 kilometres (200 mi) southeast of the state capital, Lucknow. It is the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism, and played an important role in the development of Buddhism. Some Hindus believe that death at Varanasi brings salvation. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Varanasi is also known as the favourite city of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva as it has been mentioned in the Rigveda that this city at older times was known as Kashi or Shiv ki Nagri.

Varanasi is a holy site for Hindu pilgrims. Hindus believe that being cremated here means you will escape rebirth and go directly to Nirvana. The bodies are wrapped in white sheets and relatives feed the fires. We were shown the pyres by a volunteer at the hospice for the poor where the cremations take place.

We have made it to the holiest city for Hindus and one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, Varanasi. Every night by the Ganges River at the main Dasaswamedh Ghat, a Ganga Aarti ceremony is performed with puja, fire, songs, and choreographed dance. Diya offerings are floated down the river, bells ring throughout the night air, as we wait for sunrise, and the morning river boat cruise. The Ganga Aarti is performed at three cities in India nightly, Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Varanasi.

The holy city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh India. In this Varanasi Travel Vlog, after admiring the wiring of an Indian plug socket, you will get to experience the Ganga Aarti ceremony with me, a cremation ceremony held every evening on the steps or ghats of Varanasi leading down to the sacred Ganges river, known as the river Ganga in India.
Pick up any travel guide to India and you will read that Varanasi is the holiest and the oldest inhabited city in India, built on the sacred Ganga river, the holiest river in India, making it a top pilgrimage destination for Hindus. It is in fact one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.
The top tourist attraction is the steps or ghats which lead down to the banks of the Ganges river, known as the Ganga river in India. The steps represent passing from this life into the next life, Nirvana, and Varanasi city itself is full of poor people and sick people who all want to be cremated on the Varanasi ghats or steps in the evening Aarti ceremony. The Ganga Aarti cremation ceremony in Varanasi is conducted every evening and although it is the main attraction for tourists to Varanasi it is a real ceremony not a show put on for tourists, and the ashes of those cremated are scattered in the Ganges river.
Tourists who travel to Varanasi can view the evening ceremony from a boat on the river Ganges or from any point on the shore.
There are also many temples which you can visit while in Varanasi city during the day, however my top tip for travellers would be to take a tuk tuk out of the holy city to Sarnath and visit the many temples and monuments there – see my video of Sarnath here:
