Ganghwado in Incheon
is the fifth largest island
in Korea. The island with
many historical sites lining
its shores is like
a historical museum.
Let's take off on a journey
to Ganghwado where culture
and history is alive.
Although Ganghwado is an
island, it is easy to access
because it is connected
by a bridge.
The island is less than
an hour's distance away
from Seoul, making it the
closest historical destination
to the capital.
Ganghwado has many historical
sites from Goryeo era
to modern times.
Gapgot high grounds, Chojijin
and a canon used in Joseon era
at Gwangseongbo show parts
of the history.
In Ganghwado, the past and the
present coexist. Ganghwasanseong,
a fortress built to fight against
the second invasion of Mongolia
in 1232, is located in the middle
of Ganghwa downtown.
Jeondeungsa Temple is a must-see
destination in Ganghwado.
The temple, which symbolizes the
history of Buddhism in Korea,
was established in 381.
The temple is home to over 1600
years of history.
It is the oldest temple from
the early stages of Korean
Buddhism to still stand today.
The 1600 years of history that
Jeondeungsa has witnessed,
through the Goryeo and Joseon
Eras exude solemn atmosphere.
Ganghwado also features the
Ganghwa Cathedral, the first
church in Korea.
The Cathedral was built in 1900,
when the Western architecture
was first introduced to Korea.
Also, it shows the history of
the Anglican church of Korea.
There is Hwamunseok Museum
where you can meet Hwamunseok,
the specialty of Ganghwado.
Hwamunseok means a carpet made
with sedge with flower
patterns and it is produced
only in Ganghwado since
Goryeo period.
In this museum, visitors can
make crafts out of tall flat
sedge with local artists.
At Hwamunseok Village, various
programs are available
including making Hwamunseok,
tofu and Korean rice cakes.
Ginseng is Korea's main
health food. Even in Korea,
Ganghwa ginseng is known for
its good quality.
Ganghwado is the main production
site for 6-year-old ginseng with
excellent medicinal effect.
Ganghwa ginseng is famous for
strong scent and high contents
of saponin.
It would be meaningful to take
a travel back to a thousand
years ago in Ganghwado,
a beautiful island where history
and culture coexist.

On November 3rd, international students in Korea have went to Ganghwa Dolmen Site, the UNESCO World Heritage of Korea, and Ganghwa Peace Observatory.
At the Ganghwa Dolmen Site, they learned about the earliest form of the dolmen.
At the Ganghwa Peace Observatory, they had a chance to see the lives of North Koreans from the closest distance from South Korea!

Wolmi Theme Park is a popular amusement park complex located on Wolmido Island. It was formerly known as My Land, which first opened in September, 1992. It was remodeled and reopened as a 13,223㎡ theme park in August 2009 under the new name of Wolmi Theme Park. The park has various rides, such as the 70-meter-high Hyper Shoot Drop, Tagada Disco, a two-story Viking Ship, a 115-meter-high Ferris Wheel, and other trilling attractions.
The theme park became famous for being one of the filming locations for variety shows like We Got Married, Two Days and One Night, Running Man, and more. Also, it houses a large indoor children’s playground that includes water activity facilities such as mini flume ride, water boats, and water ball playing, as well as a 4D room. All these features make the complex perfect for all visitors of ages.

Ganghwa Island
Took a trip to Ganghwa Island off of Incheon. After a harrowing bus ride, we arrived at our campsite on the Dongmak Beach. But we couldn't see the ocean, just mud flats for as far as the eye could see. There was some discussion about whether the tide would ever come in and cover it up (I was correct) because no matter how far we trudged through the mud we couldn't see the water. Later, we got lunch at a pizza place that just happened to have a pool. (Sorry about the cursing, family!)

1st venue : Jin-Mu-Young Martyrs' Shrine (진무영 순교성지)
Jin-Mu-Young is a military camp established for maritime defense in 1700 (Sukjong 26) and is also the execution site of Catholic believers.
2nd venue : Goryeogung Palace Site (고려궁지)
Goryeogung Palace Site on Ganghwado Island is the site of the royal palace where the people of the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) resisted the Mongolian invasion for 39 years. In the 19th year of his reign, King Gojong moved the capital to Ganghwa on account of its natural and strategic advantages. During the Byeongjahoran (Chinese invasion of Korea) in 1637, the palace was lost by force to the Qing dynasty of China. Later, Joseon Dynasty palace building and Ganghwa Yusubu (Ganghwa governor’s office) buildings existed in the Goryeo palace site but were destroyed by the French army during the Byeonginyangyo (French Campaign against Korea). Nowadays, the only structures that remain are the Dongheon main office (built in 1638) and Ibangcheong administration office (built in 1654). The palace and its subsidiary buildings were restored in 1977. It has historical lessons of the spirit of independence and overcoming national crisis.

Go straight 260m to arrive at the bus stop in front of Artreon.
From the bus stop, take Bus 3000 to Ganghwa Bus Terminal.

Koreans celebrate National Foundation Day
Koreans celebrated the four-thousand-nine-hundred-39th National Foundation Day, or Gaecheonjeol, at events around the country today.
The day began with a celemony at the Sejong Center for the Arts, where Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn gave a spirited speech to the over three-thousand people in attendance.
Not far away, over a thousand people marched in a parade that started at Gwanghwamun Plaza and ended a few blocks away at Bosingak Belfry in Jongro.
The Sajikdan-shine further down the way... also held a special ceremony to educate young Korean students about the country's historical origins.
And over in Ganghwa County in Incheon, there was a Gaecheondaeje... ceremony to commemorate the birth of Dangun, the legendary founder of Korea.
