I was invited to Gangjin to participate at the Celadon Festival (강진청자축제) AKA The City of Celadon!
It has been one of the most joyful experiences I've had so far while living in Korea!
I have lived in Seoul for five months now, but haven't gotten the chance to leave. Well, Gangjin was the new city to see!
Thank you Korea Tourism Organization for inviting me to the festival!

Culture of Korea 002 Pottery village called Bonghwang
This video is about Culture of Korea 002
2. Pottery village called Bonghwang;
Bonghwang village in Chillyang-myeon, Gangjin-gun, Jeonnam, Korea is a famous pottery village which is located on the west side of Jangheung peninsula.
Pottery village called Bonghwang(봉황) in Chillyang-myeon(칠량면), Gangjin-gun(강진군)
Red firelight waves in the darkness. More wood is added to a fire hole. This is the last process in which at last a lump of earth changes into pottery. A potter controls the flame with practiced hands. He has made a fire and controlled the temperature for three days and nights with an expressionless face. Temperature control is very important in the process of making traditional pottery.
Bonghwang village in Chillyang-myeon, Gangjin-gun is a famous pottery village which is located on the west side of Jangheung peninsula. There is a traditional pottery kiln on a hill at the back of the pottery house called Chillyang Bonghwang pottery house(칠량봉황옹기집). An old potter makes a pottery in a calm manner. The reason why a lot of potteries are made in this area is that glutinous earth containing iron is produced. In addition, the waterway condition was very nice, so it was much easier to carry potteries to many places. This village was well known as a production center of celadon porcelain in the Koryo dynasty. In this area there remains many ruins of a pottery kiln for making celadon porcelain from the early part of the Koryo dynasty. Now thanks to the efforts of several private enterprises and museums, the tradition of making celadon porcelain has been handed down.
The first thing for making the pottery is to smooth clay. This process is called Mitil(밑일), meaning, the basis. In this process, dried clay is put into a water bucket to become dissolved and then moisture is removed from dissolved clay. But this process is omitted in Bonghwang village, because clay here is of good quality. Next, two kinds of works may be done. each is called Kkaekkijil(깨끼질) and Gonmaejil(곧매질). In the operation of Kkaekkijil(깨끼질), clay is clipped with a tool like a sickle. This is for assorting impurities such as big stones and sand. In the operation of Gonmaejil(곧매질), a lump of earth is spread on linen or cotten cloth and then it is struck evenly. This work is for making clay glutinous and soft. After it is repeated several times, the clay is stored in one place.
Next, is to make the shape of the pottery. This process is called Mullekan(물레칸), meaning spinning. Glutinous hardened clay is spread on the floor. It should be spread with proper width and thickness according to the size of the pottery. This work requires much experience.
The next process is to make the bottom of the pottery, which is called Bangmangijil(방망이질) meaning beating with a club. On the floor of a spinning wheel, white clay powder is scattered, on which the bottom of the pottery with proper thickness is made with clay.
The next process is to make the lower part of the pottery, which is called Taerimjil(태림질) in Korean. When pottery is baked, there is a lot of breakage in the lower parts. So, delicate hand movements are needed.
Ater finishing the lower part, tools for making pottery begin to be used. Geungae(근개) is a tool which is used to bring surface thickness to a certain level. The continual shape of pottery is formed. If the pottery, which we think has a proper height, is made, the needless part is removed, using a clay knife which is called Mokgasae(목가새).
Then the mouth of the pottery is made. After completing the pottery, simple designs are often engraved.
The next process is to put glaze on pottery, which is called Geonail(건아일).
After pottery is dried in a shaded lot with wind, it is soaked in lye. And then it is dried in the sun.
Dried potteries are baked for the first time in a kiln in which the temperature is from 800 degrees to 900 degrees. To bake them, first pile up potteries. And then light a fire. This work requires considerable experience and sincerity. Because appropriate temperature is a crucial factor to produce nice potteries. When a certain temperature is reached, a chimney and a fire tub are covered. After three days in this state, the kiln gets cold when completed potteries are taken out.
What we call pottery is unglazed pottery or glazed earthenware. It is more common to call glazed earthenware pottery. Pottery is famous for good ventilation. Thanks to ventilation, food in pottery does not spoil and can be fermented slowly. That's why pottery is used as a storage container for fermented food such as soybean paste, soy sauce, kimchi and salted seafood.
Pottery can be widely used. It is used not only as a common container but also as an important storage container. It is used as a tool for a popular belief, medical instruments, popular musical instruments and so on. Nowadays it is used for interior decoration.
