Gangoji Temple is in the Naramachi area, literally Nara Town, the former merchant district of Nara. In this area, a number of traditional residential buildings and warehouses have been preserved. Many of the buildings in the Naramachi district were called machiya, long, narrow townhouses, some of which served as the shops and others the living quarters of the local merchants. Today, boutiques, shops, cafes, restaurants and a few museums line up along the district's narrow lanes. There are some preserved machiya that are open to the public.
Gangoji Temple was one of Nara's seven great temples along with Todaiji, Yakushiji, Saidaiji, Kofukuji, Horyuji and Daianji. It was originally established as Asukadera in Asuka and was transferred to Nara in 718. Asukadera is regarded as Japan's oldest temple. Gangoji today is only a small fraction of what it was originally like.
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00 (Entrance ends at 16:30.) Closed: Opened all year round Admission: 400 yen

Naramachi, Nara Japan
Naramachi is Old Town Nara, the Ancient Capital of Japan. The neighborhood dates back to the 700s and is quite charming with its quaint little streets, old shops, and the beautiful and powerfully spiritual Gangoji Buddhist Temple. Gangoji actually was founded as Asuka Temple in the 500s, during the time when Buddhism was first introduced to Japan. This temple was in fact the very first learning center of Buddhism in Japan. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Treasure of Japan. Not only that, but it was also a very peaceful and inspiring place to spend an afternoon. A Beautiful and Sacred Place.
Yakushiji Temple, Nara - 薬師寺●奈良 - Japan As It Truly Is
Yakushiji is one of Nara's finest temples and one of Japan's best, completed around 698 AD. Sadly it's often overlooked by many.
Yakushiji in Nara is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built by Emperor Tenmu as a place to pray for his sick consort, but he died before its was finished. Yakushiji has been moved twice, and has been in its present location since 718 AD, just after Nara became Japan's new capital. Part of Yakushiji is under renovation, to be completed in 2018.
Yakushiji is a short walk from the Kintetsu Nishinokyo Station, and often visited along with the Toshodaiji Temple

Walking Around Naramachi(Nara, Japan)
Naramachi means the area centering the former premises of Gangoji Temple, a World Heritage Site. Back in 710, when the capital was relocated in ancient Nara called Heijokyo, Hokoji Temple (Asukaji Temple) in Asuka is said to have been moved to Heijokyo as Gangoji Temple. Naramachi, the “Outer Capital” of Heijokyo, is a town having a long history, which developed along the streets of the ancient capital. Since the relocation in Heijokyo, Naramachi has developed through its repeated ups and downs against a long historical backdrop. Originating in a town of shrines and temples called Nanto (South Capital), Naramachi developed as a town of commerce, and then as a town of tourism.

Nigatsu-do of Todai-ji Temple in Nara Japan
(Photo by (c)Tomo.Yun
I went to Nigatsu-do of Todai-ji Temple, but was in the process of repair of the roof unfortunately.
There is the one scene taken from this point (Nigatsu-do) in the first movie of Japanese film series called Otoko wa Tsurai yo (1969).
Tora-san - Our Lovable Tramp
Nigatsu-do (二月堂, The Hall of the Second Month) is one of the important structures of Tōdai-ji, a temple in Nara, Japan. Nigatsu-do is located to the east of the Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden), on the hillside of Mount Wakakusa.
