Ganryujima Island and Kanmon Bridge (Tunnel Under Sea) Japan, Yamaguchi - Nazrvlog44
Battle Island “Ganryujima Island” 400 years ago, Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro, both of whom were claimed to be strongest samurai, fought a life-and-death fight to win the swordsman’s crown at “Ganryujima Island” in the Kanmon Strait. Miyamoto Musashi won, but after his victory stopped dueling with anyone else. He later wrote a book on the secrets of swordsmanship entitled “Gorin-no-sho” (The Book of Five Rings).

I was finally able to edit the Shimonoseki video! It was tough because I had so much footage.
This day trip was really great. Sebastian and I just decided to take a trip to the coast and explore Shimonoseki a little bit. We visited the Shimonoseki Kaikyokan, Ganryujima Island, two shrines that I can't remember the name of, and Mos burger!

Miyamoto Musashi Monument (1654) in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka
In Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Japan there is a monument dedicated to Miyamoto Musashi that was erected by his adopted son Iori Musashi in 1654. This is some footage of that monument, which is located at the top of Tamukeyama Park in Kitakyushu.
When one hears the word samurai there are many examples that come to mind, both fiction and non-fiction. Arguably, one of the most famous samurai in Japanese history is Miyamoto Musashi. There is a lot of truth behind what we know about Miyamoto Musashi and his daring duals to the death, but there is also a shroud of mystery and myth. Musashi was a master swordsman, a philosopher, an artist, an author, and a strategist.
In 1634 Musashi was invited to Kokura Castle by Ogasawara Tadazane, who was the daimyo of Kokura Province. Musashi’s adopted son Miyamoto Iori was already employed as a vassal of the Ogasawara clan. It was from Kokura where Musashi assisted in quashing the Shimabara Rebellion and where he developed his school of swordsmanship based on two swords called Niten Ichi-ryu. He died in 1645 in Kumamoto from what is believed to be lung cancer. Before his passing, he passed along a manuscript copy of The Book of Five Rings and completed his book on the 21 precepts of self-discipline called The Way of Walking Alone.
In 1654, just nine years after Miyamoto Musashi’s death, his adopted son from Kokura, Miyamoto Iori, erected a monument in his father’s honor. The monument is inscribed with the history of his achievements as a swordsman, as well as his efforts to create his style of two-sword fencing, and even a detailed description of the duel on Ganryujima Island with Sasaki Kojiro, his long-time rival. This epitaph is believed to have been written by Akiyama Wanao, abbot of the Taisho temple in Kumamoto. During Musashi's last years in Kumamoto, Wanao had befriended the swordsman and helped him in proofreading his Book of Five Rings. At Musashi's deathbed, he gave the swordsman his last rites and his posthumous name. In 1654, Wanao composed the lengthy epitaph in response to a request by Musashi's son. This monument still stands today at the top of Tamukeyama Park in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka.
Tamukeyama Park is on a hill that overlooks the Sea of Hibiki and the Kanmon Strait giving it a strategic advantage. As a result, beginning in 1887 this site was used as an army fortress when the area underwent reconstruction to accommodate a battery guarding the Strait of Shimonoseki over which it looks. The monument was transferred to the nearby Enmeijiyama, while Iori's grave was transferred to the southern foot of Tamuke mountain, close to the entrance of what is now called Tamukeyama Park. Since then Musashi’s monument has been returned to its rightful place, at the top of the park, but the graves of Iori and his descendants remain at the foot of the hill. In 1950, it was officially developed as a park and covered with natural forests.

CRITICS' PRAISE FOR THE BOOK
Miyamoto Musashi: A Life in Arms is an impressive work of scholarship, offering insanely detailed recounts of Musashi’s battles and movements, some so richly rendered that you’d swear De Lange was present at the time, taking notes. — San Francisco Book Review
“If anyone is qualified to fill in the missing details of Musashi’s life, it is De lange, who has surely done more research on the subject than any other non-Japanese…He has painted a remarkably vibrant portrait of Musashi, one that reveals all the contradictions of a remarkable life full of triumphs and disappointments, thrilling victories as well as bitter losses…This book is unquestionably a must-read for any student of budō. — Kendō World
Miyamoto Musashi: A Life in Arms is highly recommended to anyone who is interested in the biography of this most interesting man who has inspired generations of swordsmen and manga fans alike. — Iaido Journal
This is perhaps one of the most vital and important texts on the life of Miyamoto Musashi. De Lange has searched the original military records of the campaigns Musashi was involved with and other supporting documents to provide the first accurate assessment of Musashi's life in the English language.” — Irish Fighter Magazine
If you are looking for a good read and a fantastic resource into the period in which Musashi lived then this is a great addition to your Koryu Library” — Kaigan Dojo
Sjok
