高州水庫位於廣東省高州市東北部鑒江上游支流的大井河和曹江，由良德，石骨兩水庫通過龍頭坳連通渠連結而成，是以工業用水和農田灌溉為主，結合防洪、發電、航運、養魚等綜合利用的大型水庫。總集水面積1022平方公里，總庫容11.5億立方米。20世紀五十年代末至六十年代初，高州縣、化州縣、電白縣和茂名市郊組織了強大的興修隊伍，彙集鑒江上游，大搞宏偉的高州水庫工程以及受益五縣一市的灌溉工程。高州水庫工程蓄水11.5億立方米，灌溉農田118萬畝，水庫建成後解決了茂名市的工業用水，也使鑒江平原解除了水旱災害。當年建水庫和灌溉工程，沒有今天的大型機械設備，硬是靠手拉肩扛小車推，苦幹實幹。高州水庫別稱玉湖，是一幅描繪山水的圖畫。高州水庫山腰還建有“綠水山莊”，湖光山色盡收眼底，具備了“東迎旭日、西送夕陽、數星攬月、沐風浴綠”的獨特自然條件。高州水庫是粵西地區著名的遊覽、度假勝地。50年代初，國家決定開發茂名油葉岩資源，需首先解決用水15立方米每秒的水源問題。燃料工業部提出在鑒江上游修建水庫以調節水量。並於1954年委託廣東省水利廳提供建庫資料。省水利廳於1955年提出《茂名工業區鑒江引水工程計畫任務書》和《大拜水庫查勘報告》，建議由茂名石鼓分變村開渠引鑒江水于金塘附近匯入公館河，並于鑒江上游支流曹江修建大拜水庫。高州水庫建成後，省水利電力勘測設計院於1961年8月至1962年10月組織力量對工程的地勘、測量、洪水及水工建築物等進行全面複查。洪水複查結果較原設計偏大較多，百年、千年一遇洪水位均高出原設計水位，從而提出那年在不加高大壩或擴大溢洪道的條件下，為確保水庫防洪安全，水庫汛期限制水位不超過85米高程，即原設計的正常水位90米高程降為85米高程控制運用，並經省水電廳批准執行。後來於1964年、1977年又先後進行兩次較大的複查，一直堅持按防汛限制水位85米高程控制運用。30年間，水庫雖進行控制運用，仍發揮了巨大效益。

China bridge collapse: 11 killed and 15 injured

Eleven people have been killed and 15 others injured when a partially-completed arch bridge collapsed in China. The stone arch bridge was being constructed illegally at a village in Gaozhou City, Guangdong province, the officials said. Five people were killed instantly, while six died later in hospital. Authorities are investigating the incident. The contractor has been arrested, state media reported. Report by Jennifer Cordingley.

廣東茂名市高州城[嶺南聖母]冼太廟-粵語解述2018 Gaozhou heroine temple
茂名市高州冼太廟為國家A級景區、廣東省文物保護單位，位於高州市文明路，潘州公園北面。是高州地區規模最大、等級最高的冼太廟。冼太廟主體建築共三進，總進深49.5米，總面闊13.4米，建築面積826.3平方米，分前殿、中殿、正殿。磚木結構，紅牆綠瓦，斗拱飛簷，裝飾華麗，運用彩繪、堆塑、雕刻等藝術形式，表現出濃鬱的民族風格和地方風貌。明嘉靖十四年（1535年）高州知府石簡始建，嘉靖四十三年（1564年）和清同治年間分別重建，1990年12月，廣東省文物管理委員會批准重修。1992年8月動工，1994年12月全部竣工，立重修碑記。周恩來總理曾稱頌冼夫人為“中國巾幗英雄第一人”。2000年2月，江澤民同志視察高州冼太廟時，盛讚冼夫人維護國家統一、增強民族團結的精神，稱她為“我輩後人永遠學習的楷模”。廟內《冼夫人記》碑、《恭謁冼夫人廟書》碑等碑刻，保存完好。八十年代以後，廟內雕造于清同治年間的玉香爐，亦已由私藏居民完璧歸廟。兩尊冼夫人塑像，一大一小，大者由雕塑師與機械師仿原像設計，施以巧藝，使之能坐能立，供人瞻仰。座像後面，畫在牆上的是一幅麒麟（瑞獸）圖；龍頭、獨角、掛書、獅背、龍牙、葵扇尾、鹿爪。麒麟腳踏八寶，回首望月，生動活動，高大威猛，麒趾呈祥。2000年2月20日，黨中央總書記、國家主席江澤民巡謁該廟，在盛讚冼夫人豐功偉績的同時，並指出地方窄了點，活動空間太小，應予改進。是年，高州市政府投入巨額資金，對高州冼太廟開始進行擴建，使高州冼太廟真正建成為名副其實的愛國主義基地。2002年7月，廣東省人民政府公佈高州冼太廟為省級文物保護單位。冼太夫人是西元六世紀時的嶺南百越族女首領，是廣東高州人，一生致力於祖國統一和民族團結，功績卓著，更被民間尊稱為“嶺南聖母”，在廣東、海南、東南亞等地有廣泛影響。後人為紀念冼太夫人而在各地興建了許多冼太廟，僅在茂名地區就超過200座，高州冼太廟是高州地區規模最大的冼太廟。明初，高州府治南遷茂名城（今高州市區）後，冼太廟也隨之南遷，並於嘉靖十四年（1535年）建於東門之外，稱高州冼太廟。冼太廟正殿明間內，雕有冼夫人座像。在冼夫人座像兩旁站立的是冼夫人兩個貼身侍衛，一個叫木蘭，替夫人執撐寶劍；另一個叫曹娥，為夫人保管帥印。她們二人時刻跟隨左右，分別站立於左右兩旁。太廟後殿是馮公廟。馮公是冼夫人的丈夫馮寶，任高涼太守，畢生支持冼夫人成就大業，被隋文帝追封為廣州總管、譙國公。馮公廟是單進建築，正殿前面為大天井，兩邊有回廊，廊端與冼太廟正殿次間相通。馮公廟內設馮寶夫婦座像，群眾稱之為和合神。青年男女遇到難解的煩惱事時，都喜歡到馮冼座像前細語傾訴，以求得馮冼夫婦的幫助。這種馮冼廟宇統建為一體的建築佈局，在冼廟建築群系列中還不多見。

In the midst of yet another military equipment controversy involving Chinese and American aviation companies, the Aviation Expo, China '99 opened in Beijing on Thursday.
The government-controlled company at the heart of the scandal was one of the biggest exhibitors.
Although the exhibition's theme is air traffic control, much of it was taken up with showing off China's military might.
It was also an opportunity for weapons manufacturers from other countries to offer their wares.
Aviation Expo, China '99 opened to a military fanfare in Beijing on Thursday.
During the opening ceremony, Chinese government representatives shared the podium with military officials and foreign ambassadors.
Over two hundred exhibitors from all over the world are taking part.
One of the biggest Chinese exhibitors, The China National Aero-technology Import & Export Corporation (CATIC), is embroiled in a scandal concerning the exchange of technology with an American company.
The U-S company is being charged by the United States Justice Department with violating American export controls.
But officials from the company deny the allegations, saying they have no need for American technology.

It's nonsense. I don't think so. You see, so much of the technology we have already developed ourselves, quite well. There's no need to do things this way. The Chinese people never do things like this.

In keeping with the American embargo on military exports to China following the Tiananmen Massacre, U-S companies present at the expo exhibited only civil and aerospace technology.
Representatives from companies such as Raytheon refused to talk to the media.
But if American companies kept away from military themes, Israel made no pretense about the reasons for its presence.
The entire Israel section of the Exhibition was organised by the Israeli Ministry of Defence.
Next to Russia, Israel is the biggest provider of military equipment to China.
And Chinese military officials appeared very interested in what the various exhibitors had to show.
During the recent war of words with Taiwan, China has made efforts to show the world its military prowess.
Celebrations to mark China's 50th anniversary of communist rule included a lavish parade on Tiananmen Square featuring the symbols of its military might and national pride: ballistic missiles and heroic soldiers.
Heavy artillery and missiles rumbled along the Avenue of Eternal Peace, including China's new East Wind-31 intercontinental ballistic missile, which is capable of reaching Hawaii and Alaska.
Some American critics of China believe China could not have built the East Wind-31 missile without American technology.
But the Chinese remain adamant they do not need American technology to build their weapons.

The things mentioned in the American Cox Report are sheer nonsense. We have never had the intention to steal American technology. Our exchanges with Americans are all part of a normal cooperation. We rely on ourselves, especially when it comes to the development of military aircraft.

Whether they have used stolen American technology or not, the Chinese continue to modernise their army in their effort to show the world that they are a force not to be reckoned with.
