The profession of hand making tents is the stitching fabrics on textile, and the art of colour distribution. All that is used in it is the needle, the thimble and the scissors. The thimble is the cone that protects the finger from the needle, it makes the work faster.

The craft of tent making is not profitable in Egypt, but it is abroad. There is a great appreciation of the handicraft outside of Egypt, that is why it is profitable there as they appreciate the time spent on the work which is about 10 to 12 hours for a worker to finish one piece.

The prices starts from 50 Egyptian pounds (about $3.00) for a small pillow cover, and up to 5,000 Egyptian pounds (about $300) for larger pieces depending on size and content.

Previously they were confined to consolation and funeral pavilions, and special forms for wedding parties celebrations. Now there has been an evolution and other forms and contents added to the tents.

It is an old tradition, they use it because it is a handmade, heavy raw materials are used to make it and it can withstand various climates - sun and rain. It also has multiple forms and patterns. Each person chooses the appropriate shapes and colours that they like.

This tent making area has existed since ancient times. thousands of years. The tent industry started here, from this area. No one makes these kinds of tents except here. Tents are made of thick fabric in the city of El Mahalla (a town in the Nile delta famed with textile manufacturing) to resist dust, wind and rain.

LEAD IN:
Egyptian craftsman on Cairo's Al-Khayamia are renowned for the colourful tent fabrics they produce.
But there are concerns the skills of this centuries-old market are at risk of being forgotten.
STORYLINE:
Colourful tapestries dangle above the heads of visitors ambling along Al-Khayamia Street.
This is known as the Street of Tent makers - for obvious reasons.
Vendors inside small shops stitch together swaths of colour to make unique designs.
People have been producing these fabrics right here on this street for centuries.
Abdullah Fathi is crafting the wing of a bird.
With a thimble and a pair of scissors, he makes it look easy.
