Dalhousie Travels #theindianwanderess
Itenary
Day 1 - Traveled by train (Jammu Tavi) from Mumbai to Pathankot - 28 hrs.
Day 2 - Pathankot to Dalhousie- 3 hrs by Cab. Relaxed at Hotel and some evening strolls.
Day 3 - Went around Dalhousie after breakfast. Three major streets, Thandi Sadak, Garam Sadak (so named because of the sunlight these streets receive) and Court Road. Had lunch at a local Himachali Kitchen Restaurant. And checked for sightseeing trips with HP Taxi Drivers Union and booked a cab for 2 days.
Day 4 - Bhalai Mata Mandir (its a long haul, can skip if you don’t have enough time) & Chamba. Winding road following the River Ravi, you will pass the beautiful Chamera lake, which is a reservoir of Chamera Dam. You also pass a lovely waterfall along the way to Bhalai Mata. After visit g Bhalai Mata, then got to Chamba, break for lunch at a local dhaba for lip smacking Palak panner and laccha Parathas. With our tummies full, visited the Bhuri Singh (Chamba) Museum and took a steep shortcut from the Museum to Lakshmi Narayan Temple, a 10th century temple complex with historical and architectural significance. Dropped back to Dalhousie at Subhash Chowk for a cup of coffee and walked back to the Hotel. Late evening walks around Dalhousie (carry a torch or headlamp as streets are not evenly lit).
Day 5 - Traveled to the base of Dainkund to hike to Pohlani Mata Mandir at 9000 ft. Our cab driver Sunil, accompanied us (Would highly recommend his services) and regaled us with stories, legends and interesting info about the flora and fauna we got to see along the trail. A local guy and an economic graduate he is a treasure trove of information! Dainkund, especially is not to be missed, if nothing but for the 360 degree views ! If I ever go back to Dalhousie, I would want to go to Dainkund practically everyday. Importantly not everyone who starts climbing wants to go all the way (the incline is a bit steep at the start, but it’s too easy later). So less people and more nature, I hope you get the gist. Don’t forget to carry water and be suitably warm as it gets really windy. After Dainkund we traveled to Khajjiar, a lush meadow, surrounded by a cedar forest, with a small lake at its centre. A 12th century Nag temple made from wood, is also nearby. Had lunch at a local dhaba, after going around the entire perimeter of the meadow. After some insane posing in typical Himachali costumes for dumb touristy pictures (am still embarrassed) at Khajjiar, traveled to Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary. Another gem near Dalhousie. It has a forest guest house and V & I immediately agreed that we would rather stay here the next time we visit. Not much to do except enjoy being in the lap of nature, with the majestic Deodhars for company and watch the mist descend upon you. There’s a Sunset point here but we didn’t wait long enough as it had started raining. There’s also a trek from Kalatop to Khajjiar if you are interested. Btw, the film Lootera was shot here if that interests you. Stopped on the way back to Dalhousie at Rock Garden, a local picnic spot (highly recommended). The vistas from here are stunning !
Day 6 - Traveled to Pathankot and back to Mumbai, by train.
There are tons of more places to visit near Dalhousie, Panchpula, Satdhara, Subhash Baoli and so on. But we prefer spending more time at each place so we visited less places (we do that on all our trips).
Options : You can travel from Mumbai to Amritsar by flight and take a cab to Dalhousie (5 hrs).
Travel to Gaggal (airport at Dharamshala). Visit Dharamshala and then Dalhousie. We had that option open but after reaching Dalhousie we preferred it’s laid back charm to the more commercial/populous Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj.
Pathankot to Dalhousie and Pathankot to Dharamshala is the exact same distance.
Hope all this is helpful! Let me know if you need any more information !
