NEPTUNE MEMORIAL REEF | SCUBADIVING IN MIAMI FLORIDA
Scuba diving Neptune Memorial Reef was at the top of my list of things to do when I landed in Miami, Florida. It's an underwater cemetery just off the coast, and a very cool and creepy dive site. If you'd like a burial at sea, you can have your ashes mixed with concrete. Then, you are formed into a small statue and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean to be part of the artificial reef.
By chance, I was in the area around Halloween, and jumped on a boat to experience one of the most unique dives of my life. Tarpoon Lagoon and Ocean Safari (Both PADI dive centres) were running a night dive on Neptune Memorial Reef to carve pumpkins. Spooky, Epic, Beautiful. It was amazing.
Florida state has some very impressive SCUBA diving, I wish I had more time to explore while I was there. I only had time for this experience, and Manatees further north. Florida is worth the travel time if you're a diver, so much to see!

Sell FL Cemetery Plots - Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park
Home to Pinellas County's oldest recorded burial, Florida's Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park has been the final resting place for families in the Clearwater area for nearly 150 years. Established in 1853, Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park, sitting along the western coast of Florida, is home to many of the city's founders and pioneering families in repose. Sylvan Abbey proudly displays its historical roots while forging ahead with state-of-the-art burial options.
Shrouded in Spanish moss and lined with over 1,000 southern live oaks, Sylvan Abbey sits on 95 acres of well maintained landscaped grounds. With four beautifully landscaped ponds, cypress and oak trees and colorful azaleas, Sylvan Abbey is tranquil retreat from the outside world.
At the heart of Sylvan Abbey lies Peacefield Mausoleum and the Garden of Reflection Cremation. Two landscaped atriums stand at the center of Peacefield Mausoleum, where two breathtaking stained-glass windows glisten in the sun in the two story, open-air Peacefield Chapel. Palms and quiet walkways flank the Garden of Reflection where family and friends can have a moment of quiet reflection.
Nationally recognized for its beautiful landscaping, Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park is a special place created to honor the memory of those at rest. It is a place where time stands still; a place where friends and family can celebrate memories and honor those they love. Sylvan Abbey encompasses the beauty of the Florida coast while providing a quiet haven for those at rest.

K 9 Memorial Event 2019
A record amount of people attended our K-9 Service Dog Memorial Tuesday, March 5 to pay tribute K-9 heroes placed in our Garden of Heroes. K9 service dogs and their handlers from many area police and sheriff’s departments including the Clearwater Police Department and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office were in attendance at the service to remember deceased service dogs from both agencies. Nearly 60 K-9 service dogs are currently interred at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens.
Curlew Hills Memory Gardens features one of Florida’s only authentic pet cemeteries. The company proudly donates burial plots in the pet cemetery to all service animals of both law enforcement agencies. Without this donation, the handler would pay out of his own pocket for the burial of the animal upon his death.

FORT CAROLINE
During the sixteenth century, France was determined to expand its empire. Spain, the world's leading power, already had a foothold in the Americas, and France wanted a share of the riches the Spanish were gaining through trade and plunder. France's first attempt to stake a permanent claim in North America was at La Caroline, a settlement near the mouth of the St. Johns River in Florida.
At first, the settlement was to be a commercial venture, but religious conflict in France broadened the goals. The growing persecution of French Protestants (Huguenots) led their most powerful member, Admiral Gaspard de Coligny, to make a proposal to the crown: the colony could also be a refuge for Huguenots. An exploratory expedition, commanded by Jean Ribault, left France in February 1562. On this voyage, he erected a monument at the River of May (now known as the St. Johns River).
Permanent settlement of 200 soldiers and artisans began in 1564, led by Rene de Goulaine de Laudonniere, who had accompanied Ribault on the previous expedition. With help from the Timucua Indians, the colonists began building a village and fort on the river's south bank, naming the area La Caroline after their king, Charles IX.
Three hundred colonists left France to establish a permanent settlement in North America. Included were some of the leading families of France, wearing gilded armor and brightly colored clothes. Other representatives of French society included artisans to provide entertainment and produce drawings, and laborers to build the fort. The desire for permanency was illustrated by the inclusion of women, of whom at least four had husbands. Most were Huguenots, but there were also Catholics and agnostics. The colonists were seeking opportunity and freedom in a distant land.
French artist Jacques le Moyne de Morgues came with Laudonniere to Florida in 1564. His job was to paint images of the people, flora and fauna, and geography of this part of the New World. Le Moyne was one of the few who escaped from Fort de la Caroline when the Spanish attacked in 1565. He found refuge on a French boat, along with Laudonniere and several others, and returned to Europe, where he recreated from memory scenes of the New World.
In Florida, both Spain and France hoped to claim their piece of the new world. By the time the French planted their settlement at La Caroline, Spain was entrenched in South and Central America and its sea routes through the Caribbean were well established. Spanish ships bearing gold and silver from the mines of Mexico and Peru stopped at Havana before sailing for Spain. They rode the Gulf Stream through what is now the Straits of Florida and up the southeastern coast of North America. The Spanish were uneasy about a French settlement because their treasure ships, while they followed the Florida coast, could be easy prey for suspected French raiders in their nearby haven at La Caroline.
They be all naked and of goodly stature, mighty, faire and as well shapen...as any people in all the worlde, very gentill, curtious and of good nature... the men be of tawny color, hawke nosed and of a pleasant countenance...the women be well favored and modest...
French explorer Jean Ribault was impressed by the first native peoples he encountered in Florida. The Timucuans under Chief Saturiwa, who met the French at the mouth of the River of May in 1562, were one of a number of Timucua-speaking tribes who inhabited central and north Florida and southeastern Georgia. They were the final stage of a culture whose way of life had remained essentially unchanged for more than 1000 years.

Lake Thonotosassa Tornado - July 8, 2003
Outflow boundaries from prior storms in eastern Manatee and southwestern Pasco counties collided over eastern Hillsborough County, and soon after a rotating thunderstorm formed near Thonotosassa just before 630 PM EDT. Minutes later, a slow moving tornado developed just east of Thonotosassa. The tornado, first spotted at 635 PM, was more than 100 yards wide at it's peak, and traveled 2.2 miles before dissipating at 647 PM.
The tornado started near the end of Collins Ranch road and traveled north across Thonotosassa road at the county park and boat ramp. the tornado then continued north into the southeast corner of Lake Thonotosassa, where it became stationary and sucked up boat loads of water according to one eyewitness. The tornado then came back onshore and headed north, just west of Hendry Ranch Road before dissipating a short time later.
Most of the damage from the tornado occurred at the end of Collins Ranch Road where several light structures were destroyed and trees were snapped off at the base and thrown. A nearby house only lost a few shingles. Boaters on Lake Thonotosassa were able to view the tornado near the eastern shore. Finally, a large piece of sod was stripped off the shore and was found floating in the lake.

The Fountain of Youth, St. Augustine, Florida
In this video Salvatore Vinciguerra visits the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park in St. Augustine Florida. Salvatore first shows you the spring house where in 1513 Ponce de Leon discovered the Fountain of Youth. The exhibit contains a replica of the cup that Ponce de Leon carried with him to retrieve water out of the fountain. It should be noted that archeological digs are ongoing and conducted by several universities. The founding of the mission and settlement predate Jamestown by 50 years and is the oldest settlement by Europeans in the new world.
In this video Salvatore shares with you the Timucan Indian burial grounds and reproductions of an Indian village that would be typical of the time period. Exhibits such as the blacksmith and firearms exhibits are ongoing throughout the day. The planetarium and the discovery globe have set show times. If you are ever in St. Augustine this is a must see attraction as it is educational, entertaining and reasonably priced for families and large groups.
