The Garden Route is a popular and scenic stretch of the south-eastern coast of South Africa. It stretches from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River which is crossed along the N2 coastal highway over the Paul Sauer Bridge in the extreme western reach of the neighbouring Eastern Cape. The name comes from the verdant and ecologically diverse vegetation encountered here and the numerous lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast. It includes towns such as Mossel Bay, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Plettenberg Bay and Nature's Valley; with George, the Garden Route's largest city and main administrative centre.

The Best of the Garden Route + Addo, South Africa
The Garden Route is a 300 Km (190 mi) stretch of the southeastern coast of South Africa that stretches from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River in the Eastern Cape.
Featuring fresh water lakes, stunning mountains, indigenous forests, golden beaches and vividly colored wild flowers, the Garden Route is one of the most beautiful areas in South Africa and a popular holiday destination for local and international tourists alike,
During my 5-day Garden Route + Addo Elephant Park trip with Hot Spots 2 C, I experienced the best of the Garden Route (Nature’s Valley, Storms River, Sedgefield, Wilderness, etc), and also jumped from the highest bungy bridge in the world, zip lined over waterfalls, hiked through the lush Tsitsikma Forest, fed and interacted with elephants, was amazed by the beauty of the Cango Caves and also did a safari at Addo Elephant Camp.

Garden Route, Knysna, Western Cape
Knysna is a town with 51,078 inhabitants in the Western Cape Province of South Africa and is part of the Garden Route. It is primarily built on the northern shore of a large warm-water estuary, known as the Knysna Lagoon, which is fed by the Knysna River. The estuary opens to the ocean after passing between two large headlands. These are popularly known as The Heads, and have become infamous due to the loss of boats and fishermen passing through their treacherous and unpredictable waters. Near them are geological formations, known locally as The Map Stones. To the north of Knysna, Afro-Montane or temperate rainforest covers the hilly terrain for 20 km until changing to fynbos or macchia high up in the Outeniqua Mountains.
Knysna has a climate similar to that of Mediterranean regions. Summers are hot and winters mild to chilly. Knysna has one of the richest rainfall percentages in South Africa with the wettest time of year being between October and December. Knysna stays green in any season, and its temperate climate makes it a tourist destination all year round.
The town is a popular destination for both tourists and senior citizens entering retirement, especially among the British and former expatriates due to the year-round warm climate. Recently the town has also become a preferred destination among golfers, as the town boasts several world class golf courses including Pezula Golf Course, Simola Golf Course and the well established Knysna Golf Course situated on the lagoon. It is situated near the towns of Plettenberg Bay and George, where there is an airport.
Knysna hosts a variety of events annually, which draw local and international visitors alike. Such events include the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival (late June/early July); the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras (end of April/beginning of May); Gastronomica lifestyle festival, which promotes healthy eating and organic principles(September); and the Rastafarian Earth Festival held at the end of July, celebrating Rastafarian religion, culture and lifestyle.
The Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival, held annually in late June/early July, is the town's biggest event. The duration of the festival is ten days, first held in 1983. Oysters, the festival's namesake, are a large component, and approximately 200 000 are consumed over the 10-day period. Many sporting activities take place too, such as rugby, golf, bowls, squash, cycling and marathons. The Knysna Forest Marathon and Half Marathon, as well as the Rotary Cycle Tour draw many sporting enthusiasts to the town.
Top 4 Garden Route Beach Towns | South African Adventures Pt. 6 | Exploring the WESTERN CAPE Coast
This is it, last days in South Africa! This week, we continue down the Garden Route for some exploring in Plettenberg Bay, some shopping and seafood at the Knysna Oyster Festival, visiting our cousins BEAUTIFUL new home in George, and wrapping things up in Stillbaai and Jongensfontein.
Plettenberg Bay has a special place in Mommy’s heart because that’s where they would “go to town “ when in Nature’s Valley. We walked around, spoke to a local REALTOR® there about property, had lunch (and a few drinks ????) at a spot with a gorgeous view, and then made our way down to the Global Village—a cute little spot on the edge of town with all sorts of crafts and handmade products. The also had one heck of a jungle gym there for the kids to play on.
Next, we stopped in Knysna for the Annual Oyster Festival and we always love going to Knysna! We shopped for a bit in the Knysna Central Market, got coffee at the outdoor mall there, let the kiddies play around in Pirate’s Cove, and then made our way down to the waterfront. We must say, the Knysna Waterfront was a real highlight (knysnawaterfront.com). We hit some golf balls onto a floating green in the middle of the harbor, had an AMAZING lunch at the Dry Dock Restaurant, and captured some pretty epic aerial shots with the drone! Highly recommend Knysna, we could have spent another full day there at least.
After that, we drove to George and visited with our cousins who have a gorgeous, brand new home right on the cliffs just outside George. Right when we got there, we saw a big whale out in the ocean playing. We didn’t get to spend a lot of time there, but it is a very beautiful area and the best part was being there to celebrate with our family on their next big step!
Lastly, we spent the night in Stillbaai, which is a famous beach for its beauty and its surfing. In the morning, we woke up and had one of the best breakfasts of the trip, got yelled at by a lady for flying our drone on “her” beach, and then made our way over to Jongensfontein for some tidepooling and some adventures on the beach, before we jumped back in the car to head back to Cape Town to head for home! The Garden Route and pretty much everywhere we went in the Western Cape was crazy awesome! If you get a chance to go to South Africa, don’t just hang around Cape Town the whole time—go check out the Garden Route up to Storm’s River Bridge, you won’t be disappointed! Having amazing adventures and spending quality time with the ones you love. That’s definitely #WhyWeWork.

The stark northwestern Kalahari is a semiarid savannah thats home to leopards, cheetahs and several game reserves. In KwaZulu-Natal province lie the Drakensberg Mountains and the Amphitheatre, a dramatic semicircular cliff with the Tugela Falls at the top. Major urban areas include Johannesburg and the township of Soweto, where Nelson Mandela worked to end apartheid. Durbans Golden Mile has a refurbished promenade and is famous for its surfing beaches. Northeastern Sun City is a huge resort complex of casinos and golf courses. Capital Pretoria features key historic Transvaal sites such as the Voortrekker Monument and Kruger House.
