It aims to nurture peace and healing in a country still recovering from a 15-year civil war of religious factions. But the garden has been beset by delays. Last month, Asseily hosted a ceremony near the garden, bringing together people from all religious backgrounds to celebrate their common beliefs. Paige Kollock reports from Beirut.

Part 3: Healing the Wounds of History Conference Lebanon 2011
Documentary (Part Three) of the proceedings of the Healing the Wounds of History Conference Lebanon 2011. The event was organised by the Centre for Lebanese Studies (lebanesestudies.com) and the Guerrand-Hermès Foundation for Peace (ghfp.org), in partnership with the Lebanese American University (lau.edu.lb). It was held on 11-13 November 2011 in Byblos, Lebanon.
This part captures the HWH Conference Lebanon's Closing Ceremony when the participants planted an olive tree at Hadiqat As-Samah (the Garden of Forgiveness) in downtown Beirut. During the three-day conference, all the participants wrote on copper tags the grievances that they were ready to let go of and the thoughts that they no longer wish to take with them into the future. These tags were placed on the olive tree planted outside of the Garden of Forgiveness. This was a significant moment of the conference.

What Is My Responsibility for Peace in the World: Five Steps towards a Peace Process
This webinar offers participants the opportunity to develop a greater awareness of our own responsibility for peace in our lives and to acquire more skills to apply around us.
The webinar will address our own responsibility for war and peace and the role forgiveness plays in releasing cycles of violence. Through personal reflection, we can experience those aspects of ourselves that are not fully contributing to peace and harmony and how to release and transform them through forgiveness. By doing so, we can also unblock the gifts we have inherited, in order to use them and appreciate them more fully in our lives.
As a witness of the pain of the civil war in Lebanon (1975--1991), Alexandra Asseily decided to explore her own responsibility for war and peace and became a psychotherapist. Her focus is conflict resolution—whether in the individual, family, tribe or nation.
In August l997 she was profoundly moved by a vision she had concerning the repetitive nature of conflict—that consciously and unconsciously held grievances are received by each new generation through an ancestral contract that can only be released through forgiveness and compassion. This vision inspired the Garden of Forgiveness in Lebanon to which Asseily has been committed since 1998. The garden is under construction in the heart of Beirut. It lies between three cathedrals and three mosques and amongst the archaeological ruins of 3,000 years of human living and dying.
She is a governor and a founder of the Centre for Lebanese Studies, Oxford University, and on the Board of the Guerrand-Hermès Foundation for Peace, an Advisor on the World Religions and Spiritualities Advisory Council of the Fetzer Institute, and a former member of the Advisory Board of the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard University. In 1978 she was co-ordinator of International Aid Organisations in Lebanon after the first Israeli invasion.
Adyan - From War to Reconciliation documentary Trailer
Adyan produced a 14 minute documentary film in Arabic on Lebanese witnesses to repentance, forgiveness and peace after having been leading militia men during the civil war. The film consists of interviews with 2 former militia leaders during the Lebanese civil war (1975-1990), one from the Lebanese Forces, a 'Christian' militia, and the other from Murabitun, a 'Muslim' militia.
These two men present a crucial message, especially for the Lebanese youth, because in the post-war period, they re-read their experience and started doing everything possible to make up for it through personal repentance, then a public apology, followed by joint public testimonies focusing on reconciliation and peace-building.
Adyan disseminated this film as part of its awareness program, but also presented it to other NGO's to screen it in to raise awareness among different sectors of the Lebanese society.
