Repatriation & Restorative Justice: From Native American Remains & Sacred Objects to Nazi Art Theft
October 25, 2018
This panel addresses the process of repatriation at the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), repatriation from the tribal perspective and the repatriation of artwork, which was stolen from Jewish families during the Holocaust-era. Jackie Swift will speak about the process of restoring Native American cultural items and human remains including funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony from museum collection to lineal descendants and culturally affiliated tribes, clans, villages, and/or organizations. David Martine will present on his work as the former Director/Curator of the Shinnecock Nation Cultural Center and Museum on Shinnecock Reservation in Southampton, NY. Conversation will follow regarding the concept of restorative justice within these two cultural contexts.

GA Families Regroup After Medical Marijuana Bill Fails
Hope is still strong for families who have to regroup after Georgia lawmakers failed to pass a medical marijuana bill last week. The bill that would have helped children suffering from severe seizures came very far, and it had overwhelming support from both the state's House of Representatives and Senate, only to fall short. A last minute attachment to the bill regarding insurance coverage of autistic children held up progress before this year's legislative session ended.I would give anything for Zoe to know that I'm here, and I'm fighting for her, said Sheli Gilley, a Dalton mother whose 7-year-old daughter, Zoe, suffers from severe seizures caused by a disorder.Gilley said she plans to push federal authorities to declassify marijuana as a schedule one drug because it would help families in support of the drug's medical uses. Gilley said cannabis oil would help. These seizures are brief, but there's a lot, maybe 15 to 20 sets during the day, said Gilley. It just seems like it should be a crime for that to be. How can I not get medicine that is helping children? I just don't understand.Several Georgia families, including the family the bill Hailey's Law was created for, couldn't wait for politics to play out, and they were forced to move to Colorado, a state that allows marijuana use. Gilley recalled an update from one family she knows.(Her daughter is) responding to her name. Her seizures have decreased dramatically, said Gilley. She's doing amazing out there and it's not even been a week, I don't believe.Gilley knows how Zoe's life could be, so she holds on to hope that Georgia lawmakers will change their minds in 2015.That is a huge thing to let our children know that we're here, and that they could respond to us, said Gilley.Gilley's family along with another Dalton mother helped raise about $2,600 through a fundraiser two weeks ago. The money will help pay for their children's medical bills as they suffer from those seizures.Gilley said she will wait to see what Governor Nathan Deal does next, and whether lawmakers will pass legislation in 2015 allowing medical marijuana. If not, she said she may not have a choice but to move out of state to continue caring for her daughter.By Briona Arradondo

As shutdown drags on, 'interesting dynamics' appear on Capitol Hill
The fight over the government shutdown remains at a stalemate, 20 days after some federal agencies closed. President Trump traveled to Texas Thursday to visit the Mexico border, meeting with members of the U.S. Border Patrol. Meanwhile, protesters across the country urged an end to the shutdown. Lisa Desjardins and Yamiche Alcindor tell Judy Woodruff why there are still few signs of optimism.
