Magnificent Melbourne's Cycling Gems 2018: The Anniversary Trail
Starting on Heidelberg road my route turns South on Chandler Highway until I reach the beginning of the Anniversary Trail. The trail cuts through the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne, like Kew, Burwood and Alamein. The track then merges with Gardiner's Creek trail, which I follow until I reach the Main Yarra trail. Heading west I turn South on St. Kilda road and then East on Commercial Road to Prahran to do my most-needed shopping for the day.

Tucked privately away at the end of a no-through road, this gracious 4 bedroom plus study red brick Edwardian home sits peacefully amongst immaculately landscaped formal gardens looking remarkably the same as it would have done when newly built c1907.
Faithfully maintained and embellished with Art Nouveau decorative influences, this delightful home retains a wealth of period features including pressed metal ceilings, leadlight detail, timber fretwork, bay window, ornate ceilings, cornices and fire places and is comfortably embraced by a wide return verandah.
The 3 bedrooms at the front of the home are of generous dimensions and the formal living and dining rooms afford a charming trip back in time. The hallway skylight is an astute addition and the capacious cupboards in the study cater to the needs of a modern home office. The family bathroom is supplemented by a bathroom/laundry with a 4th bedroom toward the rear of the home.
The light, bright and spacious kitchen/family/meals area opens out to the verandah and brick paved alfresco terrace and enjoys a sweeping outlook over the garden and beyond. Added features include ducted heating, family room air-conditioner, salt water swimming pool, garage/workshop and carport.
This magical family residence is within an easy walk of Gardiner Station and city tram and close to Malvern Village, Monash Freeway, Gardiners Creek Trail and sought after schools, Lauriston, De La Salle, Korowa, Sacre Coeur and Caulfield Grammar Malvern Campus.
Flooding in East Malvern
Heavy rain caused our local creek to become a river.
Stonnington Council - Brixton Rise - Cycling path issue and local government inaction.
Stonnington Council - Brixton Rise - Cycling path issue and local government inaction, stubbornness and lack of understanding the issue.
Clearly no one from council or local government uses this path as a daily commute, or the issue would be fixed!
The issue is a result of clumsy, and ill thought 'engineering' of the entry and exit points of the cycling path. This part of the path is a small, but annoying missing link in the Gardiners Creek trail. Bollards and the tight and ridiculous curbing treatment means that cyclists are negotiate the tight turn (with loose gravel/mud on the shoulder and a generally narrow path) or bypass is by entering the wrong side of the path, creating a safety issue should there be oncoming cycling traffic on the path.
Although raised to council as an extremely easy to repair fix through adjusting the curbing entry, the concerns were dismissed due to 'traffic' on the road. However, this shows the lack of any rational understanding by council.
Firstly, traffic is minimal on this road, as it's a no through road. A traffic count would easily confirm this. Secondly, the main concern is the curbing entry problem, which is in the direction of any traffic flow, NOT against the traffic. Third, both pedestrians and cyclists are forced to share the roadspace, without any markings or a proper footpath.
Rather, the curbing has been created by people without the consideration of the path as a commuter link to the Main Yarra Trail, and CBD. Stonnington Council claims to want to become a cycling municipality, yet their stubbornness to implement a very easy fix illustrates that their intentions and reality are two completely different things.
Perhaps if members of council, vic roads and local government actually utilised the path they would see many easily fixed issues along the trail which degrade ease of use and impede mobility of this primary piece of infrastructure as an alternative to the road network..
