#BackyardExperiment: A Pop-up Park and Social Study in Garema Place, Canberra
#BackyardExperiment research was lead and driven by Street Furniture Australia.
The activation project was a collaboration between Street Furniture Australia and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, with support from the ACT Government. The park was designed by Context.
The white paper and documentary received a 2018 Smart Cities Award from the Smart Cities Council Australia and New Zealand, 2017 NSW Parks and Leisure Research Award, and the 2017 German Design Award.
60 movable seats. 8 days. 1 location. This short documentary shows how a colourful pop-up park increased foot traffic by 190% in only 8 days.
Inspired by the work of US placemaking expert William Whyte, the Backyard Experiment project used time-lapse cameras to observe and learn about people and their relationship with public space.

Flashmob Double Proposal (Australia, Canberra - Garema Place)
My partner Alicia and I met through our love for dance and i wanted to show her my love and commitment for her through a flashmob to signify our love. This project for 3 months in the working with secret dance rehearsals and even a decoy to be able to get Alicia to the flashmob without her suspecting a thing. It was so special and everyone onboard creating this awesome memory have so much love for us! To top it off, she proposed back to me with a counter offer.

23 year-old Omid, an Iranian refugee detained by Australia on Nauru, died in a Brisbane hospital on Friday after setting himself on fire in front of visiting UNHCR officials. A witness reported his last words were, “This is how tired we are, this action will prove how exhausted we are. I cannot take it anymore.”
Omid joins Reza Barati, Fazel Chegeni, Hamid Kehazaei, Ali Ahmad Jafari, Reza Alizadeh, Mohammad Nasim Najafi, Khodayar Amini and Leo Seemanpillai as one of the victims of Australia’s barbaric detention regime, whose deaths lay bare the bipartisan boldfaced lie that these policies are designed to save lives.
