Jaswant Singh Rawat was an Indian rifleman soldier of 4 Garhwal Rifles, Uttarakhand who won the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously at the Battle of Nuranang in the present day Arunachal Pradesh during the 1962 India-China war. He was born on 19 August, 1941 to Shri Guman Singh Rawat, at village Baryun, Pauri Garhwal district, Uttarakhand. His family now lives in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
The exemplary bravery shown by Jaswant Rawat was honored by building a memorial at the post where he fought the Chinese army. The post which he held against the Chinese Army was named as Jaswant Garh. Another honor bestowed upon him is that he continues in the service even after death, he has been awarded promotions as if he is still serving the Nation.
Local people around Tawang area believe that he has become a saint and his spirit protects the area.
The Indian army keeps at least half-a-dozen personnel here to take care of Rawat as if he is alive. He is served bed tea at 4.30 am, breakfast at 9 am.

Lansdowne
Lansdowne is named after its founder, the Viceroy of India during 1888-1894 Lord Lansdowne. It was the main base of independent movement activities during the Indian pre-independence time. Currently, Lansdowne is the command office of the legendary Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army is in. The Garhwal Rifles Regimental War Memorial and the Regimental Museum are places of significance in Lansdowne.
Lansdowne is known for its natural beauty and its tranquil environment. Though well connected by motorable roads and located quite near to many busy cities, the place is unique because of the sense of seclusion and peace it offers.
Located in the Garhwal district of the state of Uttaranchal, Lansdowne is a small picturesque hill station. It is at a height of 1706 m above sea level and is preferred for its comfortable weather throughout the year. In fact, due to its weather and scenic beauty, Lansdowne was a popular hill resort for the British, and they built a cantonment here which is still preserved and maintained well.

A historical defence museum named after first Victoria Cross holder from Garhwal Rifles Darwan Singh Negi, Darwan Singh Museum contains rarest collection of Garhwal Rifles. Located near the Parade Ground in Lansdowne, Pauri Garhwal, Darwan Singh Museum was inaugurated in 1983.
Darwan Singh Museum is a well kept musuem where one can see arms and ammunitions used in the war. I was astonished to saw different types of guns, machine guns and rocket launcher. 50 rs ticket is charged for entry. Location is very near to the market and kept very clean by the army persons.

Darwan Singh Negi VC (November 1881 – 24 June 1950) was the first Indian soldier ever to receive the Victoria cross from the hands of H.M. The king Emperor on the field of battle[1] and was among the earliest Indian recipients of the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
Negi was approximately 33 years old, and a naik (equivalent to corporal) in the 1st Battalion, 39th Garhwal Rifles, British Indian Army during the First World War when he performed the deeds during the Defence of Festubert for which he was awarded the VC.
He was awarded the medal on the same day as Khudadad Khan VC; but the latter's VC action was of earlier date, so that he is regarded as the first Indian recipient.
Negi retired with the rank of subedar, equivalent to a British captain. Both his son Balbir and Balbir's son Nitin served in the Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army; both achieved the rank of colonel.[3] His Victoria Cross is held by his family. The regimental museum of The Garhwal Rifles in Lansdowne, Uttarakhand is named the Darwan Singh Museum in his honour.
