Flying over Gariep Dam
Flying over the Gariep Dam, Free State Province, South Africa
The town Gariep Dam, (the youngest town in South Africa) situated alongside the N1, is perhaps better known to most for the manmade Gariep Dam (which is the largest dam in South Africa with a radius of 360 square kilometres) which forms part of the Orange River Development Scheme.
The sheer magnificence of this more than 100km long and 24km wide dam, is indeed sufficient to testify to the exceptional engineering and success of Africa's largest water supply scheme.
The great Orange River project which was started in 1928 gave rise to the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam. The Town and Kampong areas were erected in the early 1960's. The rural area became known as Oranjekrag and accommodated 3500 people all involved with the construction of the dam wall. The completion date of construction was 31 August 1969.
The realisation of a temporary town never materialized. Today there are more than 600 permanent residents living in the Town.
Gariep Dam has two main tourist attractions in the Free State, namely the Nature Reserve and the Resort Aventura Midwaters. The towns official status as the Municipal of Verwoerd Dam was proclaimed on 21 April 1994. The name was officially changed on 4 October 1996 to Gairep Dam.
Gariep Dam is the most central point of the Republic of South Africa. An excellent road network connects the town to the Eastern Cape, North and South Namibia and Botswana.
The town also has a airfield with a double tarred runway. International gliding championships are held annually in December at the airfield. Overseas gliders agree that Gariep Dam is the mecca for gliding competitions to set up world records for gliding

Gariep Forever Resort
My family and I went to briefly visit Gariep Forever Resort during our July 2017 road trip. This borders on three provinces; Free State, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape. We visited the Gariep dam wall and the friendly operator offered to give us a tour through the wall. What an experience! Enjoy! :)

Bloemhof dam from above
This is an aerial video of Bloemhof Dam and Sandveld Nature Reserve taken with a DJI Phantom 2 Vision +
Bloemhof Dam is a dam in South Africa. It was originally known as the Oppermansdrif Dam when under construction during the late 1960s. It is located at the confluence of the Vaal River and the Vet River, on the border between the North West, and Free State, provinces of . The dam wall is very long with a total length of 4 270 m. The reservoir is very shallow, and therefore needs a large area to mean anything for water storage. The area around the reservoir (dam), has been a protected area, but because it lies on the border between provinces, these became two separate nature reserves. On the North West Province side lies the Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve, on the Free State side is the Sandveld Nature Reserve.
The town named Bloemhof lies on the North West side of the Vaal River.
The dam was commissioned in 1970, has a capacity of 1,269,000,000 cubic metres (4.48×1010 cu ft), and an area of 223 square kilometres (86 sq mi), the wall is 33 metres (108 ft) high. It is fed with the outflow from the Vaal dam (located upstream near Heidelberg) as well as rain collected in the Vaal-, Vet-, Vals- and Sandriver catchment areas.
Oppi Dam Campsite - Oudtshoorn // South Africa Safari Day 18 – 20 of 25.
We spent two nights at the Town Lodge in George, enjoying the comforts of urban living for a change. We watched movies and ate at the resturants, and relaxed by the pool. The kids were chuffed to have WiFi again, but I could wait to get out of the city and crowds.
We picked strawberries at redberry farm.
Check out Oppi dam – you won’t be sorry you did:
Then we headed over the outeniqua pass to oudtshoorn where we were camping again at a stunning campsite, Oppi dam. Its great camping option if you’re heading to Oudtshoorn, with close proximity to the cango caves, which we visited in the afternoon, and the next morning we explored Cango Wildlife ranch.
In this video I included, Bokkie and Ash’s cage dive with the crocodiles. Next week video upload will be Jay and my footage of our dive.
