Opening of Blaenavon Heritage VC School
The minister for education and skills, Leighton Andrews, has officially opened the new school at the £13million community campus in Blaenavon.
The 450-place Blaenavon Heritage VC Primary School replaced the existing schools in the town and accommodates all primary school-aged children in the area.
The school, whose name was chosen following a competition for local school pupils, also features a 130-place nursery and is physically linked to community leisure facilities, including a two-court sports hall, dance studio, fitness suite and external multi-use games area.
The leader of Torfaen council, councillor Bob Wellington, said: This official opening marks the end of one journey and the start of another. I thank the Welsh Government for supporting and sharing our vision to provide the very best facilities for the children and residents of Blaenavon.
We have built a school which is the envy of every head teacher, governor, teacher and pupil in the borough and would rank among the very best schools in the United Kingdom. Critically, in these difficult financial times it was delivered on time and on budget.
This school will provide the foundations for life. It is a vibrant, welcoming environment which clearly motivates pupils and I know the head teacher has gathered a dynamic and motivated team of staff to provide every child with the opportunity to be the best they can be.
The good working relationship between Torfaen council and contractors Kier Construction was recognised at the sixth annual Constructing Excellence in Wales Awards recently. Torfaen council was named Client of the Year, with all judges agreeing Torfaen exemplified best practice and that the council demonstrated excellent community involvement. The £13m Blaenavon Community Campus project won the Community Benefits Award.
Kier's South Wales operations director, Martyn Osborne, said: We would like to extend our best wishes for the future to the staff and pupils at Blaenavon Community Campus. We are proud to have been part of creating a new legacy for the community. Our links with local groups, pupils, parents and teachers will not be forgotten; neither will the collaborative team approach adopted on this project and the wider Torfaen framework.
