A little hidden gem in Glengarriff County Cork. The Garinish Island (also known as Garnish or Ilnacullin) is just a short ferry ride from the town, a enjoyable trip passing a seal colony along the way.

The island is stunning, particularly the Italian gardens and the various viewpoints around, including a martello tower offering amazing panoramic views. It fells more like a mediterranean island than somewhere just off the coast of Ireland!
This really is a unique and amazing location and a visit is highly recommended. The house is open for tours from March to October.

Garnish Island is another one of Ireland's finest destinations. Taking the Blue Pool Ferry, we set sail past a seal colony on the way to Garnish Island, which is located off Glengarriff in West Cork. While it's not a cheap day out, it's reasonable enough with the ferry costing around 30 EURO return. Once you get to Garnish Island there is an admission fee to the Island itself, which is 10 EURO for 2 adults. The kids went free. While you can walk around Garnish Island in a relatively short time, there is plenty of viewing points and places to stop and crash out with a picnic.
We headed off with everything from kids to GoPros and Osmo Pockets (which most of this video was shot on) and for a change the Irish weather held up and Garnish Island was pretty amazing. Let me know what you think of the place in the comments below.

Amazing and wonderful flowers, plants and trees immaculately maintained at this Italian Garden located at Garnish Island, one mile and ten minutes boat ride off town of Glengarriff in West Coast of Ireland. Boat trip is an easy ride and visitors are surprised by wild life and seals during their trip.

Garnish Island, is an island in Glengarriff harbour, part of Bantry Bay in southwest Ireland, which is a popular tourist attraction. The Office of Public Works, which maintains the gardens on the island, uses the name Ilnacullin (from the Irish Oileán an Chulinn, meaning 'island of holly') to differentiate it from Garinish Island in County Kerry.
The garden was designed by Harold Peto, (1854–1933), for its owner John Annan Bryce, (1841–1923), a native of Belfast, who, with his wife Violet, purchased the island from the War Office in 1910. Violet died in 1939 and their son Roland bequeathed the island to the Irish nation in 1953. It was taken over and is still maintained by the Office of Public Works. Renowned for its gardens and architecture (a mansion was designed by Peto but was never built), the island has played host to writers including George Bernard Shaw and George William Russell.
There is a restored Martello tower on the island dating from the time of the Napoleonic Wars. The Garnish tower, like others in Cork, but unlike other Irish Martello towers, has a straight cylindrical shape that does not splay out at its base.
The island of Ilnacullin extends to 15 hectares (37 acres) and is renowned for its gardens which flourish in the mild humid micro-climate of Glengarriff harbour assisted by a mainly pine shelter belt. Structures include a clock tower, a Grecian temple, a Martello Tower, and an Italian casita.

Whenever I go on a city break or day out, I take the Panasonic NV GS230 because of its size, colour reproduction and control of image, I love this camcorder, the image from it is astonishing. Garnish Island off the south west coast of Ireland is one the most beautiful places in Europe, the camera reproduces the different colours with crystal clarity.

Getting there
Access is by one of several ferry services to the island from the village of Glengarriff. These ferries generally include a tour of the nearby seal colony. The island is paywalled, as of 2015 the admission charge is €4.00 per person. Landing by private craft is also possible at the main landing point used by ferries. A private slipway is used by staff working on the island.
