NGRUK - The Gartell Light Railway
A visit to the Gartell Light Railway in South Somerset, UK. This 2' narrow gauge railway is usually open on the last Sunday of each month during the summer and at Bank Holidays. Trains run every 20 minutes and the line is fully signalled. For more information see - Music Sweet September by Corel VideoStudio Scorefitter
Templecombe Station
Some mobile phone video of the station taken on 18th May 2012. The station was closed in 1966, and re-opened in 1983 after a vigorous local campaign. In 2012 control of signalling was transferred to Basingstoke and there are plans to open new facilities on the opposite side of the line so that the footbridge will become redundant. Staff numbers are now very limited and assistance for wheelchair users is not always available to reach the current platform. A neglected statue, Tempus Fugit, stands in a grass area by the platform - see

Gartell Light Railway Easter Open Day 17th April 2017
My annually visit to another local railway is privately owned Gartell Light Railway which boost a big range of Southern & Great Western Railway signalling along side a 2ft narrow gauge with a number of steam and diesel locomotives.
The unique of the line is featured by running an small part of the old Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway as well.
In this video the locos in running was North Dorset Loco Works 1998 built 0-4-2T No.6 Mr G and two diesels GLR rebuilt Bo-Bo lookalike class 33/1 no.1 Amanda & Baguley-Drewry no.2 Andrew. Usually GLR 2009 built 0-4-0 no.9 Jean is running but now undergoing an overhaul.
Enjoy!

Gartell Light Railway - Diesel Day - 09/02/2019
Saturday 9th & 10th February 2019 saw the Gartell Light Railway host it's annual Model Railway Exhibition, as part of the event the Gartell ran it's first public service of the year, with Class 33 look alike Bo-Bo diesel Hydraulic Locomotive, No. 1 'Amanda' and Baguley-Drewry Diesel Hydraulic Locomotive, No. 2 'Andrew' taking it in turns to haul services between Common Lane, Pinesway Junction and Tower View.
Filmed from a number of lineside locations along the route, we see 'Amanda' working the 3 coach rake up, the steep climb onto the old Somerset & Dorset track bed, before 'Andrew' takes over the services to Tower View.
Many thanks to the friendly and welcoming member of GLR, for allowing me to film from a number of special lineside locations.

The Gartell Light Railway - 30/10/11 - Part 4
The Gartell Light Railway is a 2ft gauge miniature railway which runs for 3/4 of a mile on part of the former track bed of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway near Templecombe. Opened in 1990 the line runs from the main base at Common Lane Station, climbing on a 1 in 32 gradient the line runs under itself the gradient then eases to 1 in 50 on the approach to Pinesway Junction Station. After leaving Pinesway Junction the line descends south on 1 in 132 gradient then starts climbing at 1 in 190 briefly and arrives into Park Lane Station. At present they are working on a northern extension from Pinesway Junction where the line will continue for another 200 yards to a new station. It is hoped the new extension will be opened in early 2012. We visited the line on one of their open days where there were trains running from 10:30 - 16:30 departing Common Lane every 15 minutes, this was being their last open day of the year.
Locos operating throughout the day were:
- Ex- Southend Pier Railway Bo-Bo DH no.1 'Amanda' re-built by the GLR in 2000 to resemble a BR Class 33.
- 4wDH no.5 'Alison' built by Alan Keef ltd in 1993 (On station pilot duties)
- 0-4-2T no.6 'Mr.G' built by the North Dorset Locomotive Works in 1998, she is based on the W.G. Bagnall locomotive 'Polar Bear' which runs on the Amberley Museum Railway.
- 0-4-0TT no.9 'Jean' built by the North Dorset Locomotive Works in 2008
Shots included in this video are:
- Amanda arrives into Common Lane Station, Alison then takes the stock away and shunts it into the carriage sidings.
- Mr.G arrives into Common Lane Station and again Alison takes the empty stock away to the carriage sidings.
- Alison then shunts Mr.G back into the shed.

Gartell Light Railway Opening Day 30/08/15
My annual trip to one of my nearest railway's the privately owned Gartell Light Railway. The locos was in used was GLR no.2 Andrew, GLR no.6 Mr G (although didn't run in the morning due to failed injectors), GLR no.9 Jean
Although rather interesting day that the usual GLR no.1 Amanda wasn't running but no.2 was and Mr G failed during the morning with injectors problem but ran during the afternoon. A few showers was about making the climb out of Common Lane stations with an gradient of 1in32 making trains to stall a few times but managed to get up there fine.
Enjoy!
