GaryFarrell : California Wine with Tony
Gary Farrell Vineyards & Winery in Sonoma's Russian River Valley was established in 1982 when Gary Farrell, one of the pioneers of the region, produced 50 cases of Pinot Noir. The winery started producing its own wines in August 2008 in its new, cutting-edge, $15 million winery built on the side of a mountain overlooking Russian River Valley. As a general rule, it does not own its own vineyards, but produces wines by purchasing grapes from local vineyards Rochioli, Allen, and Starr Ridge. Gary Farrell Vineyards & Winery ships 12,000 cases per year of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, its main wine.
Fort Ross Vineyard - Gary Farrell Vineyards & Winery
Fort Ross Vineyard is located on a very cool, coastal ridge ~1200-1700 feet above sea level within the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, 80 miles northwest of San Francisco. The vineyard sits less than a mile inland from the Pacific Ocean and is recognized as one of the closest vineyards to the California coastline.
The ocean fog at this elevation is less intrusive than in lower lying coastal vineyards, rolling in to cover the vines at night but then receding with the morning sunrise. The coastal tempering effect prevents extreme temperature swings; in fact, the lows rarely dip below fog temperature of ~55°F and rarely get above 85°F on hot, sunny days.
With its rugged coastal terrain, marine sedimentary soils, long sunny days and gentle sea breezes, these coastal ridges have become one of the most highly regarded growing regions in all of California. Of the roughly 32 small vineyard blocks, we receive Pinot Noir from two amazing sections, including clone 777 and Calera selection.

Roth Estate Wines
Last year we had the winemaker for Lancaster and Roth Winery in the store, Jesse Katz was in town for a tasting and both he along with his wines were both very impressive. As a boy traveling with his well known wine country photographer father, Andy, winemaker Jesse Katz was exposed at an early age to the most famous wine regions on earth. While his father was taking photographs and creating books in Burgundy or Tuscany, the seed was being planted. Later, as a young man working summers in the vineyards and winery lab while attending Fresno State University in California it wasn't long before Jesse had his Enology Degree with a minor in chemistry. After honing his craft in Napa and Argentina, Jesse was recruited from cult producer Screaming Eagle in 2010 and quickly established that he understood how to build on the tradition of excellence that has defined Lancaster Estate from the very first vintage. Working with legendary winemakers like Andy Ericson, Paul Hobbs, Hans Vinding-Diers and Robert Foley shortcuts the process of absorbing a lifetime of winemaking insights. Working in an array of climates and countries brings added depth. With dust on his boots, Jesse has quickly learned what the estate vineyards promise.
