Lesotho Sky 2014 Day 5 - Malealea to Roma, 89km
Day 5 of the 2014 Lesotho Sky sent riders off on the the 89 kilometer stage from Malealea to Roma. Leaving the lodge and up the Gates of Paradise pass riders were treated with truly spectacular views in the perfect weather. The longest stage in the event had riders climbing for much of the first half up to the highest point at Ha Tlali with a fast mostly downhill run to the finish line.
Overall leaders Louis-Bresler Knipe and Gert Heyns (Contego) were first to arrive at the Roma Trading Post in 04:31:19. Shaun Mackenzie and Simon Zahnd (MyGas) arrived second in 04:35:39, followed by day 4 winners Teboho Khantsi and Phetetso Monese (Alliance 1) in 04:47:47.

Lesotho Sky 2015 in 90 Seconds Day 4
Probably the best 89km most of the riders would've spent on a bike. The first obstacle was Gates of Paradise Pass, a spectacular road with great views over Malealea Lodge. From there riders branched off the beaten path and onto a series of single tracks through little villages and the village of Ha Ramoshabe, the water point and home to the Sky Trust Community Project. From Ha Ramoshabe riders headed up towards Thaba Tele; a huge mountain landmark and ultimately on, to the highest point of the day, Ha Tlali. The village where the riders in 2012 sought refuge in a barn from the crazy storm that swept through that day. From Ha Tlali it was all downhill… well, sort of, with some really fun single track to take riders back home to the Roma Trading Post Lodge
Lesotho Sky 2015 in 90 Seconds Day 3
The affectionately named “Malealea Monster” is not called that for nothing…
After a short and sharp start up the road, riders quickly turned straight onto one of the most flowing pieces of single track in Lesotho. Following a rather precarious descent in to the Machaleng river valley, they hit the first water point after just 8km in. The road to Ribaneng is not a flat one. This is a brutal loop that tested their climbing legs and riding skills.
Following the second water point, a rather substantial climb took riders towards the famous Gates of Paradise Pass. Once at the top (finally) they experienced a really great piece of riding on some really rugged dirt track with hips bumps and the odd rock to keep them entertained all the way back to afternoon tea at the Malealea Coffee shop. This year there was a new sting in the tail, courtesy of Michael from Malealea Lodge.
