Frankfurt Airport is the second most important international airport in Europe and it is the gateway to the EU. The EU is a huge market for animals and plants from all around the world and lots of them are coming in illegally. That's why it is so important for us, that from now on, sniffer dogs will support the customs department and help us look for endangered species.
6. Various of confiscated items
7. SOUNDBITE: (German) Heike Jehring, spokeswoman, Frankfurt Airport Customs:
It started with an initiative of the World Wildlife Fund. We have, here at the Frankfurt Airport, confiscated 112,000 specimens covered by the Washington Protection of Species Treaty, and we think that we can find even more with the help of the endangered species sniffer dogs. They are reliable, as we already know from drug enforcement, and they just have better noses than humans.
8. Wide Frankfurt Airport baggage handling hall
9. Various of confiscated items found in luggage
STORYLINE:
Two sniffer dogs joined the force of German border police at Frankfurt Airport on Tuesday, in a move aimed at tackling the illegal importation of live animals and plants through the airport.
A German Shepherd named Amy and a Labrador Retriever called Uno, both aged 3, were the first dogs recruited as part of an initiative by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to help stop the trade in rare species.
A spokesman for WWF Germany, Roland Gramling, said Amy and Uno's work at Frankfurt Airport would be particularly important because the airport is a gateway to the European Union.
The EU is a huge market for animals and plants from all around the world and lots of them are coming in illegally, he said.
That's why it is so important for us, that from now on, sniffer dogs will support the customs department and help us look for endangered species, Gramling added.
Amy illustrated her ability to detect suspect items by finding a live iguana among 15 suitcases lined up for her to sniff out.
She leapt onto a grey suitcase in the middle of the row and started wagging her tail and barking enthusiastically.
WWF estimates that global trade in smuggling and selling endangered, threatened or rare plant and animal products, including wood species like some Mahoganies or commercially fished species like the Chilean Sea Bass, is worth 200 billion euros (293 billion US dollars).
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species includes a list of 33,000 plants and animals that are considered to be at risk.
Customs officials said the use of sniffer dogs will be a powerful weapon in their fight against the illegal trafficking of plants and animals.
They are reliable, as we already know from drug enforcement, and they just have better noses than humans, said Heike Jehring, a Customs spokeswoman at Frankfurt Airport.
Customs officials said police drug dogs can sniff over about 2,000 pieces of passenger baggage in an 8 hour shift, so Amy and Uno will probably be able to work at a similar rate.
The 10 week training program for the two dogs cost 25,000 euros (30,500 US dollars) and focussed on 16 specific smells, including feathers, some leathers, reptiles, caviar, coral, ivory and bone, including monkey skulls which are popular tourist souvenirs in some countries.

Silence of the Labs - the fifth estate
In the past few years, the federal government has cut funding to hundreds of renowned research institutes and programs. Ottawa has dismissed more than 2,000 federal scientists and researchers and has drastically cut or ended programs that monitored smoke stack emissions, food inspections, oil spills, water quality and climate change. Now some scientists have become unlikely radicals, denouncing what they call is a politically-driven war on knowledge. In Silence of the Labs, Linden MacIntyre tells the story of scientists - and what is at stake for Canadians - from Nova Scotia to the B.C. Pacific Coast to the far Arctic Circle.
