Gateway of India is a monument built by British raj in Mumbai to commemorate the landing of their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary at Apollo Bunder, when they visited India in 1911. The monument marks the height of British imperialism. It is built inculcating the Hindu and Muslim architecture. The top being inspired from Islamic mosques and Bottom by Hemadpanthi style of architecture.
Exactly opposite to Gateway of India is the Iconic Taj Mahal hotel and towers.
Taj Mahal was attacked by Pakistani terrorist in 26/11 carnage. It was rebuilt within a year. These two monuments are the symbol of Mumbai.

Built in Indo-Saracenic style, the foundation stone for the Gateway of India was laid on 31 March 1911. The structure is an arch made of basalt, 26 meters (85 feet) high. The final design of George Wittet was sanctioned in 1914 and the construction of the monument was completed in 1924. The Gateway was later used as a symbolic ceremonial entrance to India for Viceroys and the new Governors of Bombay. It served to allow entry and access to India. The monument has also been referred to as the Taj Mahal of Mumbai, and is the city's top tourist attraction.

(EN) The Gateway of India (Marathi: भारताचे प्रवेशद्वार) is a monument in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), India. Located on the waterfront in Apollo Bunder area in South Mumbai, the Gateway is a basalt arch 26 metres (85 ft) high. It was a crude jetty used by fisher folks and was later renovated and used as a landing place for British governors and other distinguished personages. In earlier times, the Gateway was the monument that visitors arriving by boat would have first seen in the city of Bombay.[1]
Its design is a combination of both Hindu and Muslim architectural styles, the arch is in Muslim style while the decorations are in Hindu style. The Gateway is built from yellow basalt and reinforced concrete. The stone was locally obtained, and the perforated screens were brought from Gwalior.
The central dome is 15 metres (49 ft) in diameter and is 26 metres (85 ft) above ground at its highest point. The whole harbour front was realigned in order to come in line with a planned esplanade which would sweep down to the centre of the town. The cost of the construction was Rs. 21 lakhs (2,100,000), borne mainly by the Government of India. Due to lack of funds, the approach road was never built, and so the Gateway stands at an angle to the road leading up to it (wikipedia)

The land on which the Gateway was built on was previously a crude jetty, used by the fishing community which was later renovated and used as a landing place for British governors and other prominent people. In earlier times, it would have been the first structure that visitors arriving by boat in Mumbai would have seen.[10][11]
Between 1915 and 1919, work proceeded at Apollo Bundar (Port) to reclaim the land on which the gateway and the new sea wall would be built. The foundations were completed in 1920 and construction was finished in 1924.[12] The gateway was opened on December 4, 1924, by the Viceroy, the Earl of Reading.[10]
The last British troops to leave India following the country's independence, the First Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry, passed through the Gateway on their way out in a ceremony on February 28, 1948, signaling the end of British rule.[10][13]

Gateway of India was constructed to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay (Mumbai). Sir George Sydenham Clarke, who was then the Governor of Bombay, laid down foundation for this magnificent monument in 1911. Designed by George Wittet and it took 4 years to complete this monument's construction.
The structural plan of Gateway of India is designed in the Indo-Saracenic style. One can also find traces of Muslim architectural styles incorporated in the structure.The structural design of the Gateway of India is constituted of a large arch, with a height of 26m. The monument is built in yellow basalt and indissoluble concrete. The central dome of the monument is about 48 feet in diameter, with a total height of 83 feet. Designed with intricate latticework, the 4 turrets are the prominent features of the entire structure of the Gateway of India. There are steps constructed behind the arch of the Gateway that leads to the Arabian Sea. The monument is structured in such a way that one can witness the large expanse of the 'blue blanket' right ahead, welcoming and sending off ships and visitors.
The Elephant Caves are located very close to the Gateway of India, and tourists can travel on motor boats to reach the Elephant Islands. The Taj Mahal Hotel is India's most prestigious and luxurious hotel and is situated close to the Gateway of India.

The hotel is made up of two different buildings: the Taj Mahal Palace and the Tower, which are historically and architecturally distinct from each other (the Taj Mahal Palace was built at the start of the twentieth century; the Tower was opened in 1973).
The hotel has a long and distinguished history, having received many notable guests, from presidents to captains of industry and stars of show business.[5][6] Ratanbai Petit, the second wife of the founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, lived in the hotel during her last days in 1929; her mother, Sylla Tata, had born into the Tata family, builders and owners of the hotel.[7] During World War I, the hotel was converted into a military hospital with 600 beds. The hotel is notorious as the most visible target of the 2008 Mumbai attacks.
The 2008 Mumbai attacks were a series of terrorist attacks that took place in November 2008, when 10 members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, a terrorist organisation based in Pakistan, carried out 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks lasting four days across Mumbai.

In a series of terror attacks at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the Oberoi Trident, the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, Leopold Cafe, Cama Hospital, the Nariman House Jewish community centre, the Metro Cinema,[ and Times of India building and St. Xavier's College more than 300 people got injured. Zaki ur Rehman Lakhvi was the mastermind of 2008 Mumbai attacks. Mumbai Police captured an alive terrorist named Ajaml Kasab. Ajmal Kasab was a Pakistani terrorist who was sentenced to death by Indian Supreme Court.
Mumbai Police officers Hemant Karkare, Vijay Salaskar, Ashok Kamte were among who martyred during four day encounter. Police constable Tukaram Omble was killed when he was trying to capture Kasab. Ajmal Kasab was hanged in Yerwada jail in 2012.
Indian government handover the evidences to Pakistan who was initially denying that terrorists are not Pakistani citizens.

The Causeway as it is known to the locals, was constructed by the British East India Company, during the tenure of Sir Robert Grant (1779–1838) as the governor of Bombay (1835–1838),[5] and its construction completed in 1838, which used the Old Woman's Island as a part of it;[6][7] with this the last two islands of Colaba and Old Woman's Island (out of the Seven islands of Bombay), which were first taken in 1675, got connected with the mainland of Bombay. Until 1839, Colaba was accessible only during the low tide, though soon it saw rapid development in the area, especially after the construction the Cotton Exchange at Cotton Green in 1844.[8] The Causeway was later further widened in 1861 and 1863.[9

Starting my journey, from Chembur, took a train early morning at 5AM to Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus CST Mumbai, also known popularly as V.T. The Gatway of India is about 5-10 mins from the station. And one can easily find cabs or buses there. Hope you liked the Sunrise Timelapse
