In a working partnership with the Fayetteville City's Advertising and Promotions Office - UofA Journalism students produced a video commercial for a Fayetteville Business. Students with PR/Advertising and Television Production backgrounds worked in groups to produce one minute and 30 second television commercials that will promote businesses that are located in Fayetteville .

Tyrrell Park drainage project nearly finished

Southeast Texans living near Beaumont's Tyrrell Park hope a drainage project that's close to finished will help during heavy rains. Some homeowners deal with flooded yards, and sometimes flooded homes.
Thomas Rogers lives on Phelps Road near Tyrrell Park. During heavy rains like the ones that flooded Beaumont in July, he's used to his front yard and backyard flooding.
And the last time, we have a drainage ditch in the back, way back about 3 blocks, said Rogers. It filled up and flooded back this way.
Several weeks ago, he says heavy rains brought water into his bedroom and bathroom.
Not too bad, we just had to change the carpet in the bedroom. That's it, said Rogers.
We've laid a culvert now underneath Phelps, said District Engineer for Jefferson County Drainage District 6, Doug Canant. It goes down the road and then here's the rest of the detention basin up to Seale Road that we'll be doing in the next four months.
Drainage District 6 is working to stop the flooding.
Tyrrell Park has been a source of trouble, it's so flat around here, said Canant. Where the water goes, it just doesn't have much drop in the land to move the water effectively, that's why these detention basins are the best alternative for an area like this.
One two acre detention basin on Phelps Road is finished. Workers are waiting for final approval from FEMA to dig a larger one down the street.
We are working on a 900 thousand dollar project, said Canant, FEMA is paying for 75 percent.
The next part of the project is to build a seven acre detention basin on Phelps Road, on the other side of the street from the two acre basin. There used to be three homes on part of the seven acres that repeatedly flooded.
We bought those out just because they Were constantly flooding. They were slabs right on the ground. They were just so low that they were in peril of flooding all the time, said Canant. We bought them out, they got relocation expenses, they've relocated and we bought their property.
Canant says excavation on the Tyrrell Park project began about a year ago, and it should be finished in four months.
Compared to land acquisition, environmental work, engineering, utility adjustments in the road, we don't have any of that left. We've got the hardest part of the project done, said Canant.
The large detention basin will be right across the street from Rogers' home.
I think really what's happening, it's going to take both of [the basins] to relieve us of this water, said Rogers. I'm sure hoping that this detention pond will give us some relief.
Residents say Phelps Road needs to be repaved because of the project. Drainage District 6 is working with the city, and Canant says the city will repave Phelps Road as soon as the project is finished. He thanks residents for their patience.
